What is troubling to think about is when a really large solar event takes place that could have a significant impact on this planet, will things be this much of a mess?

All that anger about made in China Team USA outfits

First of all, I can say this: I don’t like that China made Team USA’s Olympic clothing anymore than the next person. I type this, of course, on a computer make in India.. and read about the story on an iPhone made in China. Oh and of course Congress was outraged too. I am sure Harry Reid, who said we should burn the clothes and start from scratch, was wearing a suit made in the USA? And socks made in the USA? And .. well, he wasn’t. Chances are no one anywhere ever really is anymore.

And that is the tragic part of this story.

We don’t make anything here. Including military vehicles! How many times have you heard about China making weapons of war and selling them the United States? How many times before someone notices? Sports made people notice.. Team USA’s awful beret style outfit made people notice..

Another angle of this story not being mentioned is just how awful the outfits are. It looks like a remake of CHARIOTS OF FIRE.

Personally I enjoy the summer games. Really. There is something magical, still, about the Olympics. And of course this year they feature a boatload of missiles pointed directly at the city of London by British military … but that aside, the United States, with its double breasted lapels and berets, will march into Olympics stadium proudly with an American flag and outfits made in China. Wonder where that flag was made….

And wonder where team China’s outfits were made? let me guess.. Taiwan?

Feeling like 2008 all over again

Remember when dozens of people fainted while watching candidate Obama speak in 2008? It seems like it's occurring again.

During an Obama speech in Virginia, the President's pool reporters reported on a brand new 2012 version of the 08 faints:

The WEEKLY STANDARD re-reports what the pool said:
Paramedics treated 21 people on the scene and took one to the hospital, according to the Roanoke fire department.

Friday the 13th must reads

Friday night.
The mood is right.

Of course if you're so inclined to get some information into your system tonight along with your cold or warm brew of choice, here you go.. Enjoy and be safe:
And.. indeed, it is Friday the 13th. Hopefully there were no black cats in your way or ladders above your head throughout the day. And even if there were, why worry. Amazingly, 60 million people around this planet will.

Be safe and be lucky.
Perhaps today is the best day to play the lottery.

HOW LOW WITH THE AURORA GO!?

The X flare blasted off the sun yesterday with ferocity.. According to SpaceWeather.com, the timing of the event has changed as the CME which blurted out is moving faster than expected..
According to the site:
REVISED FORECAST: The CME launched toward Earth by yesterday's X-flare is moving faster than originally thought. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have revised their forecast accordingly, advancing the cloud's expected arrival time to 09:17 UT (5:17 am EDT) on Saturday, July 14th. Weekend auroras are likely.
The other question for skywatchers: How low will aurora go? NASA has a site to monitor it.. If you're in a lucky Northern state in the United States you may get a glimpse of some beautiful images..

Here is the NASA site with the map
Stay tuned..

Friday morning radar

The week is coming to a close within hours.. and along with the close of the week the brewing solar storm is also heading to Earth. The X.4 flare yesterday was huge.. but could have been bigger of course. We should be glad it wasn't.

In the mean time here are some events occurring that are worth note:

The weather threats for today include much above normal temperatures--and the problem is going to be what it does to our corn and eventual prices of the commodity.  One report says the corn crop for 2012 hinges on what happens over the next 30 days.

There seems to be something troubling about sleeping through life. But globally we are not heeding the advice of the profit Ferris Beuhler, instead kids today are taking sleeping pills in huge numbers..

Stay safe out there.

Olympic fever in Capitol after Team USA outfits be made in China

News yesterday has agitated Congress. Numerous members of the body spoke out on the floor of the House about Team USA's Olympics outfits made in China.

The 2012 USA uniform was unveiled on NBC's Today Show.. Ralph Lauren created the look and it was based off of the 1948 games that were also in London.

But where was the wardrobe made? China..

While the upset seemed to be equal regardless of the political party, it may have been Senate Leader Harry Reid that had the quote of the moment about this issue:
'I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again'
Burn them baby!
Olympics start soon.
The race for the gold may come down to USA vs China.
But in the geopolitical and manufacturing world, I think we know who's ahead.

The 'extreme' X flare earth-bound

Sunspot 1520 was the perfect storm waiting to erupt.

It was many times the size of the planet earth and aimed itself like a gun directly at our pale blue dot.

Today it fired with a ferocious X.4 flare..

X flares are the strongest of solar flares that are unleashed from the sun.

A highly cited story running tonight on Space.Com on the flare tells the tale of Sunspot 1520 and how we may see even more action coming:
But while sunspot AR1520 may sound like a solar behemoth, it is actually a relatively modest sunspot example, and promises more sun storms to come, Dean Pesnell, project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, told SPACE.com. "It's certainly not done. It's only halfway across the face of the sun right now," Pesnell said from the Goddard center in Greenbelt, Md., which oversees the sun-watching SDO mission. "We'll be able to watch it from the Earth for at least another week." The SDO spacecraft captured a video of the huge X1.4 solar flare and is one of several spacecraft keeping a constant watch on the sun's weather cycle.
There is a potential for radio transmission problems.. satellite issues.. There will also be a good chance for some amazing, spectacular, and beautiful Northern Lights--which do have a sound now, don't forget.

At this point, only minor effects are predicted to impact the planet from the event.. More developments may occur if 1520 fires off another round..

Despite the strength or weakness of this, is this planet truly ready for what would happen if a monster solar event took place? We all know the answer to that question is no. Sadly, every time we dodge a bullet we just wipe the sweat from our brow and keep moving on.. not realizing that the sun that heats us can also be our biggest enemy.

The Penn State bomb drops

Louis Freeh, formerly from the FBI, has issued a bombshell report on the Jerry Sandusky scandal.. The 200+ page document not only indicates the president of Penn State in a coverup but also strongly implicated Joe Paterno .. The report said the university tried to conceal the scandal so bad press wouldn't come Penn State's way..

Another bombshell: The report says that five boys were assaulted by Sandusky on university property after officials knew about a 1998 criminal investigation

The news biting regains their appetite for Penn State news with today's newest information.. But still the victims did suffer and do again. Their plight was ignored and covered up by adults who should have acted with decency and ethics.. Freeh's report is a must read ...for better or worse.

1520 Poised to 'explode' ?

SpaceWeather.com is using some interesting words in describing what may soon come from the sun: Sunspot 1520 may 'explode' ..

The website writes:
POISED TO EXPLODE? Big sunspot AR1520 has been relatively quiet for the past 24 hours, but this could be the calm before the storm. The sunspot has a delta-class magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class solar flares.
Latest images of 1520 have the sunspot looking very intense--and very large, one of the largest in years as EarthInformer has pointed out.

Watching. Waiting.
Staring at the sun.

A personal thought.. the meaning of life, NOT the Monty Python version

So I got into a discussion today about the meaning of life with someone, Over a pizza buffet nonetheless. But here is what I concluded.
We ask the wrong questions of ourselves.. and by doing so constantly lead new generations to ask the wrong questions, too.
When you’re young and dumb someone old comes and says those typical words: Why do you want to do when you grow up? A plumber! A reporter! A teacher!
I think we all know that the vast majority of people don’t live up to the childhood dreams.
But maybe the premise of the question should be rephrased.. maybe the basis of the question isn’t actually about money and income and the choice of a career…
Hear me out on this, because you know for a FACT that when you go to parties or functions, one of the first questions you typically get is someone asking you, “So what do you do?” i.e. JOB, INCOME, SALARY! MONEY MONEY MONEY.
Dollars and dinero. But it all means nothing.

So while I was chowing down today in my pizza buffet food I asked the other person, who right now is jobless, “what do you want to do. REALLY want to do.. like REALLLLYYY want to do?” And I said this question is based on the fictitious scenario where you have everything you wanted, salary and income aren’t an issue, and job title could matter less. Minus all that away.. like, obituary type way, whatdo you want to do…….. in this short life…. ?
Now when I asked this question I did it because I was asking her but at the same time asking myself. I, too, wanted to know what I WANT TO DO IN LIFE, TOO. And out of almost no where, I blurted out,
I want to protect innocent life. I want to protect all innocence. I really want to
And that is it. I figured out my role in life. It was just that easy. Minus away the nonsense about success. Get rid of that veil that your JOB is something that will matter generations after your once intact skin has turned to dust. And bring in the real question: What do you strive to do in life, what matters to do, and what you WANT TO DO with what matters to you?
Sure, jobs matter in the ‘now.’ And the ‘now’ seems to be where we all live all the time, never looking forward to the future and seldom learning any thing at all from the past.
So I figured it out..
Protect innocence.
Now to put that into practicality… that’s the tough one.
So ask yourself.. What do you want to do in life?

Swine flu vaccine study confirms earlier reports of increase in nerve damage

A study from Canada seems I confirm earlier reports of an upswing in Guillian-Barre syndrome, according to a report appearing in the UK TELEGRAPH..

The TELEGRAPH report on the results of the H1N1 vaccine:
Researchers in Canada have found that for every million doses of the H1N1 pandemic vaccine that were administered in 2009/10 there were two extra cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome which can be fatal in extreme cases.

A follow up On Sunspot 1520

The major sunspot is one of the latest on the sun in years, and one of the biggest in the current 11 year cycle we are experiencing. Latest observations had 1520 spanning more than 127,000 kilometers - this amounts to about 10 earths. Even more ominous is that 1520 continues to rotate into a perfect position that flares and CMEs unleashed could have a high latitude impact with auroras and potential satellite and radio transmission disruptions depending on how large a flare pops ..
All this of course remains speculation until a flare blows--but with the size and obvious intensity that 1520 presents it's a fear worth contemplating..

Speaking of the Northern Lights. Get ready for some more as Sunspot 1520 is poised to hurl potentially large solar flares at Earth in the coming days. The sunspot is huge and the chances are good for M class of even X class flares..

A strange vortex has been discovered on Saturn's moon Titan.. Winter may be coming to the huge body's southern areas.

The Earth has been lucking out lately, but solar events continue to get stronger

The UK DAILY MAIL reports what we already seem to be aware of: Solar flares just seem to be stronger and stronger in recent months..
Last week we have been seen numerous M class flares and one strong X class flare explode from our sun. Some sunspots have been so large that they 15 Earths strung together..
2013 is expected to be the big year for solar events as the sun heads to its peak of its 11 year cycle…
And if just the right elements come together, perhaps the Ed Dames Killshot will happen. But Ed Dames is just crazy… Right?

June’s second half helped the continental United States break its record for the hottest first six months in a calendar year.. And with that piece of information contemplate this: The last 12 months have been the warmest since 1895..
Get that? 1895.
Also in the news in 18895, a sandstorm crippled the panhandle of Texas, Grover Cleveland was president, and an earthquake occurred in the New Madrid seismic zone.
History repeats itself.. so watch the Midwest……. ??

I love Scranton, PA, but now for the news it's making

But the city of Scranton is in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. The Electric City has lots of great things to brag about but the headlines today is all about the Mayor cutting city workers’ pay to minimum wage because of how broke it is, and how property taxes are about to skyrocket to abnormally high proportions.
Local news stations WNEP and WBRE have been covering ferociously since it occurred, and now national news orgs are picking up the story.
According to Mayor Chris Doherty, there is only about $5,000 left is the city’s bank account after payroll..

The slow burn: If you think about it, summer is halfway home.

Looking at the calender, time appears to be fleeting.
The seconds hands on the clocks fly around in a circular motion.. after all, summer time is about halfway through.
Yes, it’s only July. And sure summer extends well into September, but by then kids are back in school and colleges campuses are less than sober. Every July, around this time, I get that gut feeling. Then the whole “Christmas in July” shopping experience malls used to try back when people went to them only added to the childhood misery of knowing that the clock was ticking.
There is something interesting about the summertime and how it trickles slowly into autumn.
Even with this year’s heat, we can be aware that cooler breezes will blow in two months.
And despite the fact that many of us are long gone from hallowed hallways of high schools, we all get that same pit of the stomach feeling as August winds to a close, and as the summer sun bakes the landscape in one last vibrant attempt to keep things hot.
Summer comes and goes..
The same in 2012 as it was in 2001 and 1991. Enjoy these moments while you can. Be alive … take in some rays.
Wear sunscreen. (I never liked that song.)

Wear sunscreen. (I never liked that song.)

Amazing images of Mars revealed by NASA

There have been some amazing new images of Mars revealed by NASA. I just stare at them and fathom the future.. a base there? Will humans’ footprints litter the landscape? Is there a life form present ? …did the Martians move underground and do they still lurk? Ok maybe the final question can be answered affirmatively as no, unless you’d ask someone like John Lear. But the rest of them are valid and wonderful to ponder..

The LA TIMES reports: The Department of Homeland Security's BioWatch air samplers, meant to detect a terrorist biological attack, have been plagued by false alarms and other failures.

It’s an eye opening story.. the money quote of the article featured here:
President George W. Bush announced the system’s deployment in his 2003 State of the Union address, saying it would “protect our people and our homeland.” Since then, BioWatch air samplers have been installed inconspicuously at street level and atop buildings in cities across the country — ready, in theory, to detect pathogens that cause anthrax, tularemia, smallpox, plague and other deadly diseases.

But the system has not lived up to its billing. It has repeatedly cried wolf, producing dozens of false alarms in Los Angeles, Detroit, St. Louis, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere, a Los Angeles Times investigation found.
