It’s all in a year..

When David Letterman discredits his own humor by becoming the focus of the joke..

When Tiger Woods discredits his long career of being an upstanding spokesman for endless companies .. Promotion of products never got so dicey until Tiger Woods’ personal life became a top story in 2009.

The year seemed to cruise by at a record pace.. Ending the year with an attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day. It’s worth noting that such an important event came so close to year’s end, it could have possibly made those other news org’s ‘year end wrap ups’ look pitiful if events would have been tragic. And thank God they were not..

Barack Obama was everywhere this year. His image couldn’t be escaped.. Whether it was the happy promotion the White House did, or the dire Joker image the opposition hoisted in protest of the Administration, the entire world watched his every move. He even had an extended commercial during football on Thanksgiving.

2009 also ended a decade.. The final year of the first ten years of the 21st century. But for some reason, the entire decade seemed to run together.. Fading like clothing in hot water.. A running tabulation of warfare continued throughout the decade after a terrorist attack in 2001, the same terrorist attack that still lives in infamy, affecting policy today. The warfare seemingly became the norm .. now the abnormal would be peace. And peace is far from at hand, according to the facts. Yemen, Iran, North Korea, tension in Russia, China provocation, the flaring violence and troops surge in Afghanistan, and the continued actions in Iraq are all signs of continued war.. Continued violence.. And continued debate about the role the United States should have in the 2000 teens.

In the year 2000, all seemed hopeful. Revelers in Times Square kissed the night away January 1, 2000. Confetti littered the streets in the cold New York air.. And only a few months later the same air was covered in soot and the smell of burned corpses. How quickly everything changes.. And how important every day is. It becomes more and more important to live life to the fullest .. Even if the fullest is stretched thin and wary of warfare and the modern economy.

2009 also ended the careers of so many from the 20th century--often those flames extinguished before they had time to truly burn. Michael Jackson’s sudden demise lit up the net with a fever pitch. His death became the biggest entertainment story of the year.. Also gone from earth, Patrick Swayze, Farrah Fawcett… and the list goes on.

This was the year that was.

When the internet first entered the mainstream, it seemed to make the earth smaller. However, our differences have also become further amplified. It appears the closer we get, the more we never change.. And the more we never change, the further apart we all remain.

Here’s to a new year….a new beginning….a new decade. Though the truthful reality will likely resemble something very different, God help us all that 2010 and beyond is happy, healthy, and filled with goodness.

I’d settle for that.
