A 'breaking up' of the earth's crust under the Indian Ocean

This website has written before about the April twin earthquakes in the Indian Ocean--8.6 and 8.2 in magnitude .. But now the NEW SCIENTIST has published an article reporting that the earth is cracking and breaking up under the Indian Ocean!

Scientists, in essence, are now looking into the earth changes in the post quake ocean. The earthquakes that large in magnitude typically occur at the boundary of tectonic plates. These didn't. So they were probably strike-slip earthquakes. Of course none have ever been recorded that strong..

The NEW SCIENTIST explains that the earth's crust began a once in a million year process of breaking a tectonic plate. A plate torn in two..
