A haboob may have destroyed your orgy plans at Burning Man

Well, some might call this an Old Testament moment: good old-fashioned divine smiting of sinners. But the truth? A haboob—that’s a massive dust storm, for the uninitiated—just demolished the legendary Orgy Dome at Burning Man.

Over on the Orgy Dome’s official Instagram, Burning Man shared:

“Our build team worked so hard this past week to erect our lovely space. Unfortunately, the winds yesterday undid all that labor and wrecked our structure. We are still here and thankfully safe, we hope to gift the playa with some workshops and will keep you updated.”

A harsh twist of playa fate, indeed. The dome is down. Nature wins.

According to outlets, a brutal dust storm barreled through Black Rock City over the weekend, unleashing wind gusts of up to 50 mph, turning visibility to near zero, destroying campsites and even art installations—like the “Black Cloud” inflatable—while sending thousands of Burners into hours-long traffic delays.

That means if you’re planning on attending Burning Man this year, it’s probably a good idea to have an alternate orgy plan—one that can survive 50 mph haboob winds.

BURNING MAN GOES RAIN MAN: EBOLA RUMORS CAUSE CHAOS WHILE FIRE MAY STILL FILL THE NIGHT AIR

Everything sounds just about awful at Burning Man.. torrential rains in Vegas and a muddy–really muddy–ground has caused chaos.. Gridlock as well as 70,000 are basically “stuck in the mud.” Like really..

But adding to the chaos and drama are rumors of a bloody virus making the rounds. Ebola, we are told, is on the ground. In the mud. In the chaos.. in the madness…

Some press are reporting on the rumors–and lack of evidence of the horrid disease being on the ground..

One man is also reported to have died at the event, with police saying investigations are ongoing.

Here is how the Burning Man Ebola rumors seemingly began: Social media … X marked the spot. Formerly Twitter (how long do we have to say X is formerly Twitter?).. on Saturday (September 2), with some accounts showing fake screenshots supposed to look like the Center For Disease Control ..

But EBOLA rumors aside, there are valid worries on the ground.

Since early Saturday, all entry and exit points of the Burning Man festival remained closed due to the thick, alkaline mud. As of 0900 ET Sunday, event organizers said, “The gate and airport in and out of Black Rock City remain closed. Ingress and egress are halted until further notice. No driving is permitted except emergency vehicles.”

Organizers continued to advise the 73,000 attendees to “conserve food and water, and shelter in a warm space.”

The Independent confirmed local officials had reported at least one death but have not released details on the suspected cause of death. A major concern is that the toxic alkali dust that makes up the lake bed is now three inches of mud, and if attendees aren’t wearing socks and closed shoes, it can cause chemical burns called “Playa Foot.”

There seems to be still a chance of fire.

Organizers for the Burning Man festival, which is currently experiencing severe weather, still plan to host its culminating event tonight — the burning of a large wooden effigy!

“We plan to burn the Man at 9:30pm Sunday September 3 weather permitting,” organizers said in a series of social media posts

Officials urged attendees not to try to leave the event grounds, and promised more information later in the day.

Rumors area abundant of a virus taking hold on at the location…

A death at the Burning Man festival amid the rain and mud was under investigation, local authorities said Saturday, and attendees were urged to shelter in place as more rain was forecast.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office in northern Nevada announced the death, which it said happened “during this rain event.” The sheriff’s office offered few details, including the person’s identity or the apparent cause.

“As this death is still under investigation, there is no further information available at this time,” the office said in a statement.

    Flooding man

Tens of thousands of people attending the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert are being told to conserve food, water and fuel as they shelter in place in the Black Rock Desert after a heavy rainstorm pummeled the area, festival organizers said.

Attendees were surrounded by thick, ankle-deep mud and organizers halted vehicles from traveling in or out of the festival after heavy rains started saturating the area starting Friday evening.

Hannah Burhorn, a first-time attendee at the festival, told CNN in a phone interview Saturday the desert sand has turned into thick clay and puddles and mud are everywhere. People are wrapping trash bags and Ziploc bags around their shoes to avoid getting stuck, while others are walking around barefoot.
