Today’s special birthday: NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

A little movie about a guy with claws.. Freddy went from villain to 1980s phenom as movie after movie eventually got minced out like sausage in a factory..

But it all started on November 9 1984 when Wes Craven’s creation took hold as a pop culture icon.

It also gave is Heather Langenkamp–and Johnny Depp.

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street, released in 1984, was a groundbreaking slasher film written and directed by Wes Craven. With a modest budget of around $1.8 million, it grossed over $25 million at the U.S. box office, making it a surprise hit. The film not only launched the iconic horror franchise but also helped propel the careers of several key figures. It introduced audiences to Robert Englund as the infamous Freddy Krueger, whose portrayal became legendary. Additionally, it played a significant role in the early careers of actors like Johnny Depp, whose role as Glen earned him his first major film credit, and actress Heather Langenkamp, who starred as the film’s protagonist, Nancy. The success of Nightmare also solidified Wes Craven as a major force in the horror genre.

    But..

Going back in time, just for fun, we find this little snippet review of the film from the AP that was shared in newspapers across America a the time–and with reviews like this, 40 years of Freddy just should never have happened.

Happy birthday Fred … no worries about bad reviews anymore.

Cool costume. Lebron James posted this image on his Instagtam account..

And now for the first time we get to see what Freddy would have looked like if his beard would have survived the fire that killed him.

34 years later: The NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 poster revisited

It was a cold day in February 1987.. theaters were alive and screaming with the debut of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3.. the Dream Warriors.

Recently it was reported that Wes Craven came to dislike this sequel the most, even while horror fans showcase it as one of the greatest sequels (and maybe movies) of all of the NIGHTMARE saga..

I even remember myself, strolling around a local mall that is now no more. I was the tender age of 6. Memories abound of the famed NIGHTMARE 3 poster. It was one of the greatest movie posters of all time. It also remains as one of the most nostalgic pieces of horror from the 1980s.

There is something really cool about the art work. NIGHTMARE 4 and 5 tried to keep the magic alive with version their art.

But something remained ingrained in the brain about DREAM WARRIORS. Maybe it was the fact that kids who were forgotten in society bound together defeat the man of their dreams. They also had to encounter their own personal hell. Drug addiction.. fear. . outcasts.. disabilities.

The imagery of these societal ‘misfits’ staring down their fears in the eyes… It’s beautiful.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors was produced on a budget of $4.5 million. The budget was in keeping with the previous two entries. It ended up earning over $44 million at the box office in the weeks it was in theaters.

  • I had a legit nightmare about Freddy Kreuger last night

I had a legit nightmare about Freddy Kreuger last night

In my dream, I can’t tell what was real.. I think I was being filmed in a movie, but when Freddy went to push me against a sharp object, I felt the pain. Then I pretended to be dead until I heard him smash through a window and leave. At this point I called 911 and heard ambulance sirens in the distance coming, when I finally had hope.

None of this horror would have been happening if it was just a movie, right?

Incidentally I was watching the ELM STREET marathon on AMC and also fell asleep listening to Richard Syrett take calls from people on Coast to Coast AM about real life encounters with the paranormal..

So yea.. that could be why, too

ROBERT ENGLUND WANTS A PREQUEL TO NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

“I’ve always thought that [not having a prequel] is a misruling in the mythology of A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Englund told the crowd at the recent Monster Mania convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland. “It got close to being rectified with Tobe Hooper’s pilot for the TV series, and there was a script that was supposedly to be directed by John McNaughton, who did Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. There was a prequel script… I think it was called Krueger: The First Kills. And it was… the last children being killed… the two detectives that found Freddy and busted him… then the body of the film were the ambulance-chasing, sleazy lawyers that get Freddy off.”

He continued, “The lawyers are actually the best parts [of that script]. There’s two of them. Freddy in court… Freddy at the table… Freddy on the witness stand… Freddy in jail. But it’s about the lawyers getting him off. They get him off and Freddy gloats too much on the courtroom stairs. The end of the movie is Freddy being burned alive. I’ve had a fascination with these projects since I did the pilot with Tobe Hooper.”

It’s alarming to consider this fact: NIGHTMARE 3 (perhaps the best of the entire series) is 30 years old.. I recall this film being in theaters as a small child.. I recall watching the trailers for NIGHTMARE 4 on TV and my grandmother would angrily shut the TV station off…

    Yes.. the memories.

And now these new figures are going to increase the nostalgia..

Freddy fans getting their wish: Robert Englund is coming back

Just for one documentary .. not a work of fiction, but a culmination of Englund’s entire life as Freddy Krueger..

EW had the exclusive story.. Highlights:

Directed by Mike Kerz, the film finds Englund recalling his years playing Elm Street villain Freddy Krueger and paying tribute to filmmaker Wes Craven while makeup effects artist Robert Kurtzman transforms the actor into the feared dream-stalker. The film will also track Englund as he meets fans and Freddy and is interviewed in full makeup by horror host Svengoolie.

“Nightmares in the Makeup Chair is my love letter to the Nightmare on Elm Streetseries and to practical makeup,” says Englund in a statement. “I’ve always been in awe of the multi-talented makeup effects artists. From sketching to sculpting, they realize the design. Then to the fine precision of the molding and the manufacturing of the makeup appliances which are nearly paper thin. And then, the application process where I sit in the makeup chair and I become their living canvas as they glue me in and paint the appliances. This documentary not only captures their talent, but I think it might inspire a new generation of practical effects artists. I was happy to become Freddy once again to share the makeup process with the fans.”

The swan song of the 20th century will be complete now with Fred appearing in the Fedora one last time..
    DOCU STYLE..

But … what fans may fear: This is probably Englund saying by to fans in Freddy garb to drop the news that he is never coming back again..

This scene from Wes Craven’s NEW NIGHTMARE– a film I still…

This scene from Wes Craven’s NEW NIGHTMARE– a film I still say is one of the scariest and should have been the ‘end all ‘ of the Nightmare series..

The premise was genius.. The creative nature of the movie seemingly is under appreciated…

And Robert Englund, in this photo, looks all too comfortable with the new fitted glove.

I am actually not happy Freddy is coming back. Again.

It should be dead, It should have been dead last century..

Maybe I’m the only one who will dare to say that.
