    #Undertaker30

So many people remember watching the Undertaker throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and that is why tonight’s nights final appearance by the star on WWE Survivor Series was poignant .. 30 years. What a run!4

During the year where it seemed only the bad could happen, another death knell occurred as the casket has been closed on a 30 year career by the rest of Star.

True wrestling fans will recall the time he stripped Hulk Hogan of the WWF title, only for the holster to regain the championship at Tuesday night in Texas.

Interestingly that was also a survivor series in history.

This is truly the end of an era, something monumental and wrestling.

Long live the man of the dead. Long live Mark William Calaway.

This reporting exclusive on the WALL STREET JOURNAL

The bodies of hundreds of people who died in New York City during the Covid-19 surge in the spring are still in storage in freezer trucks on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Many of the bodies are of people whose families can’t be located or can’t afford a proper burial, according to the city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner. About 650 bodies are being stored in the trucks at a disaster morgue that was set up in April on the 39th Street Pier in Sunset Park.

  • Down the Rabbit Hole: The Max Headroom Incident of November 1987

Down the Rabbit Hole: The Max Headroom Incident of November 1987

It makes us a little sad inside to see websites naming historic events that occurred but they neglect to speak of the most famous broadcast takeover of all time.. an epic event for whoever was able to hijack a major TV station in a major city not once, but twice..

November 24, 1987.. A day that will live in broadcast infamy..

Before but we go there, let’s first explore the vast memory hole to recall this strange Max Headroom character.

He was a fictional artificial intelligence creation known for bad jokes and a stuttering, electronically altered voice. The character was introduced in early 1985 and was created by George Stone, Annabel Jankel, and Rocky Morton..

    maxmain.jpg

He even shilled for NEW COKE:

Catch the wave.. it was just awful.
But yet the artificial intelligence figure became a Reagan-era pop culture icon.

    slide_15.jpg

The more sinister MAX HEADROOM was revealed during one of the most famous–and to this date unsolved–television hijackings of all time..

It officially has became known as the Max Headroom incident..

This is how a UPI dispatch reported events on November 24, 1987:

CHICAGO (UPI): The Federal Communications Commission joined the hunt for a video pirate who broke into regular programming at two television stations with footage of a person portraying the high-tech TV character Max Headroom.

The first interruption at “superstation” WGN occurred during the sports segment of the local news broadcast and lasted about 20 seconds, but was tame in comparison to the second break-in, which occurred on public television station WTTW. That interruption lasted about 09 seconds.

Both break-ins featured a person wearing a mask of “Max Headroom,” the computer-generated TV character,

During the WTTW break-in, the character dropped his pants, displayed a profile of his buttocks, and was spanked with what appeared to be be a fly-swatter by someone off camera.

This may sound minimal in controversy compared to TV of today.. but consider this: At the time, many who saw it twice in the Chicago area considered it a home invasion.. they were dismayed by what they say. Creeped out about the event, and even felt endangered in the safety of their living rooms.

Law enforcement, the FCC, and the FBI considered it a crime: It was a hijacking of a public television transmission.. and those who witnessed it felt beyond uneasy.

To this day, the Max Headroom incident is unsolved.. Perhaps that is the biggest takeaway. Other hijackings of the 1980’s were solved. This one, however rudimentary it seemed, was unresolved to this day.

Here was the first mini-hijack during the 9pm news on WGN.

News broadcasters tried to laugh the uncomfortable hijacking off, quickly turning back to the topic of sports..  They blamed the computer for going “wild.”

This was the second and longer hijacking that took place during the DR WHO episode during the 11pm time slot:

    UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

Theories have abounded through the years.. Perhaps an angry terminated employee? An intelligent electrical engineer  hellbent on causing mayhem.. a simple person in a garage with sophisticated technology looking for attention.

Some believe it had to be an inside job, that the event could not have taken place without a higher degree of technology needed to pull it off. No time for amateurs during a hijacking of this caliber, some would believe.

What is known is this: Workers at the station worked feverishly to gain control back after the hijacking.

The fact it remains unsolved is amazing..

The hijack is not the impressive thing in itself, the fact that the people who did it have managed to keep the secret for so many years is the impressive part.

This is how the AP reported the story a day later on November 23, 1987:

    decatur herald nov 24 1987.jpg

    NOT THE FIRST HIJACKING

Long before the 87′ hijack, another weird broadcast intrusion occurred ..

A frigidly cold evening in 1977 in England just past 5pm…. Those watching television were treated to a strange intrusion that has been dubbed the “Alien TV broadcast.”

As the news broadcast continued, a strange interruption occurred..

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyRZPokHN3g

This is the text of what was purportedly said during the hijack:

This is the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you. For many years you have seen us as lights in the skies. We speak to you now in peace and wisdom as we have done to your brothers and sisters all over this, your planet Earth. We come to warn you of the destiny of your race and your world so that you may communicate to your fellow beings the course you must take to avoid the disaster which threatens your world, and the beings on our worlds around you. This is in order that you may share in the great awakening, as the planet passes into the New Age of Aquarius. The New Age can be a time of great peace and evolution for your race, but only if your rulers are made aware of the evil forces that can overshadow their judgments. Be still now and listen, for your chance may not come again. All your weapons of evil must be removed. The time for conflict is now past and the race of which you are a part may proceed to the higher stages of its evolution if you show yourselves worthy to do this.

You have but a short time to learn to live together in peace and goodwill. Small groups all over the planet are learning this, and exist to pass on the light of the dawning New Age to you all. You are free to accept or reject their teachings, but only those who learn to live in peace will pass to the higher realms of spiritual evolution. Hear now the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you. Be aware also that there are many false prophets and guides at present operating on your world. They will suck your energy from you – the energy you call money and will put it to evil ends and give you worthless dross in return. Your inner divine self will protect you from this.

You must learn to be sensitive to the voice within that can tell you what is truth, and what is confusion, chaos and untruth. Learn to listen to the voice of truth which is within you and you will lead yourselves onto the path of evolution. This is our message to our dear friends. We have watched you growing for many years as you too have watched our lights in your skies. You know now that we are here, and that there are more beings on and around your Earth than your scientists admit. We are deeply concerned about you and your path towards the light and will do all we can to help you. Have no fear, seek only to know yourselves, and live in harmony with the ways of your planet Earth. We here at the Ashtar Galactic Command thank you for your attention. We are now leaving the planes of your existence. May you be blessed by the supreme love and truth of the cosmos.

A spokesperson at the time for Southern Television said, “A hoaxer jammed our transmitter in the wilds of North Hampshire by taking another transmitter very close to it.”

And like the Max Headroom incident, it has remained unsolved..

AND NOT THE LAST HIJACKING.. and not the last

Here are some other eerie broadcast hijackings …

Here was HBO’s Captain Midnight hijacking in 1986 complaining about $12.95  a month for HBO:

During the Steve Wilkos show, a hijacker was able to intrude and warn of zombues coming to attack.

But come on.. who could MAX HEADROM be!?

Some believe that Eric Fournier was behind the famed Max Headroom incident.

To this day some believe that he is the main suspect in the unsolved crime:

Over the years, investigators have struggled to narrow down their search to any one particular suspect. However, one person has remained on the forefront of online discussions regarding the Max Headroom incident, and that is a man named Eric Fournier.

Eric grew up in the Bloomington-region of Indiana, just a few hours south of Chicago. He was known for being brights and charismatic, but having a very strange sense of humor. In the mid-1980’s, as Eric was entering adulthood, he began playing with some punk rock bands in the Chicago region, including the bands The Blood Farmers and Skelegore.

Rumors have circulated that when Eric Fournier began playing with the Blood Farmers, he might have been involved in the Max Headroom incident. This claims blossom from the belief that the band had borrowed equipment from a local TV station to record a music video, and planned to play it over the airwaves – a la Max Headroom. However, they knew that playing their own music video would put a target on their backs and incriminate them, so they decided to do something weird with it instead: something truly punk rock and bizarre.

Allegedly, they let Eric take the lead on the whole thing, and he ended up recording the Max Headroom video and orchestrating the hijacking.

These rumors have sprouted up in the years since, because Eric Fournier left the punk rock scene in the mid-1990’s, and seemed to move his focus to a fictional character he had created named Shaye Saint John.

But we will NEVER know for sure:

Many believe that if Fournier wasn’t involved in the Max Headroom incident, then he was most likely inspired by it. He would have been 19 years old at the time, and it was a national story that would have attracted his attention in some way.

Unfortunately, we will likely never know the full story of Eric Fournier. He died in February of 2010, at the age of 42. The cause of death was believed to be related to alcoholism, which Fournier had been silently struggling with for years.

For what it’s worth, one of Fournier’s childhood friends and former band mates, Harry Burgan, discounts the rumors against Eric. He wholly believes that Eric didn’t have anything to do with the incident, and has spoken out against this theory in the years since.

THE STAND: THE DARK MAN VS THE PROPHET

    A new trailer revealed:

At one point in the trailer, a character says “It’s dangerous being a prophet during times of upheaval.” That’s a direct reference to Whoopi Goldberg’s character, Mother Abagail Freemantle, who though over 100 years old in the novel has been anointed by God to lead good people out of superflu devastated America to the city of Boulder, Colorado.

The trailer focuses closely on Mother Abagail and her evil opposite, the Dark Man, Randall Flagg—played by Alexander Skarsgård. In the novel, they encounter each other in dreams and visions and Flagg grows frustrated because he can’t use his possibly demonic powers to affect her.

Stephen King has written an all-new epilogue for the series as well. It premieres on Thursday, Dec. 17, and will stream exclusively on CBS All Access.

  • Trump Tweetcedes and then un-cedes

    Trump Tweetcedes and then un-cedes

Is it now over? How President Trump finally conceded the election to Joe Biden?

He did it the Trump way before undid it:

    Trump went on to Tweet:

All of the mechanical “glitches” that took place on Election Night were really THEM getting caught trying to steal votes. They succeeded plenty, however, without getting caught. Mail-in elections are a sick joke!

Minutes later, as “He won” began trending on social media, President Trump renewed his previous “we will win” comment ..

And showing that the Commander in Chief carefully watches the trending button on his Twitter feed, he said this:

And now begins potentially the earliest campaign cycle in history. With the lead Republican candidate, if he declares, Donald Trump. With rallies for the next 1,460 days until November ’24

  • The God of Chaos in 2068

The God of Chaos in 2068

This website has been around in some form or another since the year 2000.. I can recall covering horror news of the early 21st century during the wild west days of the internet. Back then, anything was possible. And fun! There was no social media to come and ruin a good time. Instead websites offered mysteries, oddities, awful designs, and personal touches from the owners who created them.

We devolve sometimes here into needless nostalgia. Perhaps today was one of those days.. But it happens during long cold walks in lonely parks with trees adorned with papers reminding people to wear masks.

Today, our main headline on the front page of the Horror Report was about the asteroid Apophis.. And how it could strike the planet earth in 2068.

Quite the scary concept.. Why not drop it in a year like 2020 when all things scary seem to reign supreme, right?

Stories like this appearing in Bloomberg News, an article stating that the biggest effect of the COVID-19 pandemic will be social unrest and societal upheaval. We are seeing it in European countries where governments have decided to phase in to lockdown part 2, while in the United States governors are treading waters carefully due to pandemic malaise.. President-Elect Joe Biden may face a weighty choice as the death tolls mounts by the time he is sworn into office. If Donald Trump ever leaves.. 🙂

So just picture the rebellion that would occur if we found out the world was potentially going to meet a costly fate in 2068. A doomsday date to remember.

    2068 SEEMS far away, right?

So did 2020 back in the year 2000 when I first FTP’ed up the Horror Report onto the World Wide Web.

Presumably if Apophis does hit, and I live to a ripe old age of 88, I will see calamity befall our home planet. My son would have a better shot at seeing at when he is 57 that year..

It’s funny to consider.. I did some research tonight because I knew that I spread content many years ago about Apophis when it was first discovered. I hit the jackpot on the Wayback machine from the year 2005.

The Horror Report reported this on on February 15, 2005: A giant asteroid the size of three football pitches will make the closest flyby of Earth in recorded history for an object of its size, scientists said yesterday.

Of course the same day we said,

There’s a concrete dildo floating around out there somewhere: Ouch: Vandals attack nude statue and chisel off penis…

That same year, Apophis had yet to get its cool name. It was just called 2004 MN4 when Space.com reported that the flyback of the massive asteroid would be visible to the naked eye across the planet:

Space.com pointed out that the asteroid will be 22,600 miles from Earth’s center when it flies by on April 13, 2029.

Oh.. that is a Friday by the way, so appropriate.

The 2036 flyby was also feared by many.. Early reports indicated that this would be the date of the collision with the planet. In 2013 those reported were discounted.

    WHEW, space journals wrote then..

But now new information about this rock is becoming known, and with it the renewed sense of potential danger.

While the asteroid strike is still only a possibility, with Earth Sky reporting a great article about how Apohpis is accelerating.

Although the probability of an impact from asteroid Apophis for 2029 and 2036 has been ruled out, the new findings suggest that there might be a very small chance of impact in April 2068. Previous calculations made in 2016 had all but ruled out the probability of an impact on 2068. The chance of an impact was seen in 2016 as vanishingly small, at just 1 in 150,000 odds of impact, or a 99.99933% chance the asteroid would miss the Earth. The new findings might slightly change these numbers again, as new calculations are made using both the recent data and new observations that will be made very soon.

So rest easy tonight. This is not the night of the mighty Apophis — we have more Earthly things to worry about with a virus raging and political distractions causing immense and true division.

But be warned.. a giant killer stalks. It may pass by through our friendly skies safely in 2068 and all of these predictions will be naught.

Or we will look back at 2020 and relish in the thought of just how great it was after all.

  • The COVID Party for None: The ‘dark winter’ of discontent

The COVID Party for None: The ‘dark winter’ of discontent

Let’s be honest, this year has been bleak for many restarants.

Yes, there are some shining examples of how take out only can work, but other major chains and small restaurants are feeling the burn of COVID.. The early spring and summer lockdowns throughout the United States did not do the industry favors.. And when dining finally was allowed throughout parts of the nation, few places were able to boast of a thriving night life.

And now with the media and politicians warn of what most have suddenly deemed a “dark winter,” dining is slowing again to a crawl..

A DARK WINTER?! Was it even a bright summer!?

One of the biggest attractions that many fair weathered states had was the luck of the sun. OUTSIDE DINING.. places soaked up the ability to lessen its dim fate with tables on sidewalks and closed down streets… Inside was limited, but the air outside led to some cities coming up with unique abilities to close down alleyways and less busy roadways for table side service in the open air.

But even with those few months of profit, the restaurant industry lost $120 bil by the middle of summer.

Industry publican QSR Magazine reporting this in June,

The National Restaurant Association released new data outlining the grim COVID-19 impact so far. The Association said restaurants lost $40 billion in May, bringing the three-month total to $120 billion after March dropped $30 billion in an abbreviated window and April sank $50 billion as stay-at-home policies covered the entire month. Overall, restaurants are expected to lose some $240 billion by year’s end.

As the summer ended and fall began, the pandemic showed signs up picking up in intensity.

CNBC reported this on September 29, 2020 that more than 100,000 restaurants and bars have permanently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to estimates from the National Restaurant Association.

2020 was predicted to be a year of growth. As a matter of fact, many worried that a lack of workers would have been the major crisis.

Instead 15% of the nation’s establisments closed, never to open again.

The bright side: FAST FOOD was alive and well nationwide, dishing out sodium and fats.

CNBC went on to report some more numbers showing strange success stories and disparities:

Domino’s Pizza and Papa John’s are among the most obvious winners, as consumers quickly transitioned to order their pizzas for delivery during lockdowns. But burger chains like McDonald’s and Wendy’s, which saw sales take deeper dives in March and April, also reported relatively speedy rebounds to their U.S. businesses.  The disparity between the fast-food sector and full-service restaurants is also reflected in restaurant stocks. Shares of Olive Garden parent Darden Restaurants have fallen about 8% this year, while Dine Brands, owner of IHOP and Applebee’s, has seen its stock tumble 32%. On the flip side, McDonald’s stock is up 11% and Wendy’s shares are flat in 2020. Shares of fast-casual chain Chipotle Mexican Grill have gained more than 50% year to date, adding more than $11 billion to the company’s market value. Jim Stevens, president of the Golden Chick restaurant chain, said the company saw its sales dive 15% at its more than 190 locations in Texas, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida during the five weeks after stay-at-home orders were put in place. But the fried chicken chain’s second-quarter same-store sales rose 21%, and its third quarter is on track for a 26% increase. Drive-thru sales account for about 85% of its business now, compared with about two-thirds before.

    The dark winter emerges

We are going to get very weary of this dreadful “dark winter” phrase.. President-Elect Biden and VP-Elect Harris have said it. He recently changed his language to say a “very dark winter.”

Media figures have paraded it on newscasts.. and medical experts have warned of us it..

Back in the spring, radio host Clyde Lewis had broadcasted a program where he accurately predicted that “dark winter” was going to be the upcoming phrase we needed to get used to. He pointed that an old commercial for an Ubisoft game called Tom Clancy’s, The Division Dark Winter began to go viral. That video was from 2013.

    This was that game trailer:https://www.youtube.com/embed/Fgvo-9pJ1EU?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent

Back in June 2001, prior to the 9/11 attacks, policymakers and US officials gathered at Andrews Air Force base to simulate “dark winter.” Dark Winter and Atlantic Storm were both aligned in predicting the release of a biological pathogen during a massive winter storm. The pathogen was spread on Black Friday during a major winter storm on the Atlantic Coast…

But with COVID-19, chances are your local mall will be shuddered and shopping will have ceased…

By the time Joe Biden is inaugurated as President on January 20, 2021, predictions indicate that 70,000 more will die from the virus..

FRIDAY THE 13THS AND COVID ALWAYS GET ME DOWN

Friday the 13th in March.. various states and localities began lockdowns and stay at home orders after the White House declared the coronavirus a national emergency.

November 13, another Friday, charts out where we are now so many months later:

Daily tests have increased all year, but daily cases have come in waves.. This looks to be a third wave that does not seem to be relenting.. Hospital rates were back twice this year.. now they appear to be raging.. and while deaths were down for most of the summer and early fall, things seem to be rebounding into negative territory..

    THE PARTY FOR NONE

    Cold weather approaches..

Dining outside will be a thing of memory..

This meme is making rounds on social media:

All kidding aside, something interesting has developed in recent hours on a Facebook page we follow called “Server memes.”

    A post tonight said,

Is it just West Philly or is this the slowest Friday ever?

What followed were tons of comments, still being written, from around the United States..

Comments like these from people throughout the United States on Friday the 13th, November 2020, during the pandemic:
