USGS is reporting significant seismic activity in California this morning with more than 100 earthquakes being reported across northern California.
The largest of the bunch is a magnitude 7.0 event which struck west-northwest of Petrolia, California on the northern coast of the state. Also of note is a significant swarm of earthquakes striking just south of Clear Lake and north of San Francisco, where 77 earthquakes there alone struck within the last 24 hours.
Hundreds of people across California and Oregon have already reported to USGS they felt the strong off-shore earthquake.
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 shook eastern Cuba on Sunday, after weeks of hurricanes and blackouts that have left many on the island reeling.
The epicenter of the quake was located about 25 miles south of Bartolome Maso, Cuba, according to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Several places including cities as far as Jamaica and Florida felt the shaking from thr strong quake..
A heat wave in Antarctica does not mean the same as other places.. The latest data shows high temperatures in portions of East Antarctica – where the most abnormal conditions are ongoing – that are typically between minus 58 and minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit are now closer to minus 13 to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit.. There is alarm.. but it does happen..
The set of atmospheric conditions largely responsible for the ongoing heat wave – a breakdown of the southern polar vortex – is only expected to occur once every two decades on average, according to Bracegirdle.
“This is a very unusual event, from that perspective,” Thomas Bracegirdle, deputy science leader for the British Antarctic Survey’s Atmosphere, Ice and Climate team, said.
There is a lot of panic being reported on this.. But just breathe in the cold hot air for a moment. These temperatures actually match, just about exact, to press reported back in June 1934, 90 years ago now.. this clipping from the Hugo Daily News in Oklahoma memorialized for the records:
A hydrothermal explosion rocked Yellowstone National Park today, destroying an observation area at Biscuit Basin. According to the National Park Service (NPS) , at 10:19 am today, July 23, a localized hydrothermal explosion occurred near the Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin, located just north of Old Faithful. While the observation boardwalks were destroyed by the blast, no injuries were reported.
According to USGS, no other monitoring data shows changes in the Yellowstone region. “Today’s explosion does not reflect a change in the volcanic system, which remains at normal background levels of activity,” said NPS in a news release.
Lake Ontario was the epicenter of a 3 4 magnitude earthquake, which is about nine miles outside of Henderson in Jefferson County and 50 miles north of Syracuse.
The earthquake occurred at 11:45 pm on Friday, June 28, with a depth of 10.0 km.
Those living in parts of Canada along with central and northern New York could feel the shake of the earthquake.
Several residents reported feeling the earth shake but mistook the shaking for thunder, CBS affiliate WIVB reported
Great cover! A WOBBLY headline with a Statue of Liberty shocked by the event.. the biggest quake in 140 years and luckily for New York still some newspapers to keep a print record of the event..
And now since the quake occurred, so have aftershocks: A LOT of aftershocks. As of midnight, New Jersey was up to 21 earthquakes for the day. 20 of them are probably aftershocks of the first, a potent 4.8, but we won’t be certain until the sequence ends. USGS says more earthquakes are likely over the next 30 days. They have updated their aftershock forecast once again:
You don’t see these headlines every day. You don’t FEEL these earthquakes usually on the East Coast..
On the heels of massive quakes globally–including a building-swaying seismic experience in Taiwan this week–the East Coast of the United States was hit with a tri-state shaker Friday morning..
While there was no major damage–millions of people who don’t experience this suddenly felt a strange sense of doom without the gloom..
The U.S. Geological Survey said over 42 million people might have felt the midmorning quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, or about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of New York City and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Philadelphia.
Today’s earthquake in New Jersey was the strongest the Garden State has seen in nearly 250 years, and 3rd strongest on record for the state with records going as far back as 1737. The only 2 stronger ones were a 5.2 magnitude event in 1737 and 5.3 magnitude event in 1783.
However.. this would not be fun without a conspiracy theory.. Did the MILITARY cause today’s quake!
JAPAN is bracing itself for 16ft swells to smash into its coast after experiencing a series of powerful earthquakes that sparked tsunami alerts in three other nations.
A quick succession of dozens of earthquakes struck Japan’s main island of Honshu today – the worst being a 7.6 magnitude that hit at 4.10pm local time.
The quakes triggered urgent tsunami alerts, with officials warning that waves could be as high as 16ft in some places.
Already waves of 3ft have been battering parts of Japan’s west coast.
A moderate earthquake jolted eastern Arkansas and surrounding states yesterday, generating reports of shaking from hundreds of people around the New Madrid Seismic Zone (or “NMSZ” for short) north of Memphis.
According to USGS, more than 400 people reported shaking across Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri, with some reporting light damage in Missouri. It is not yet known if this earthquake is a precursor to a larger seismic event in the immediate future.
