Saturday night live: Earthquake rattles New York City

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that an earthquake struck northern New Jersey on Saturday night. Originally reported stronger it was set to a 3.0 — but residents still felt it loud and clear.

Reports poured in from across New York City and surrounding areas, with many describing loud booms, noticeable shaking, and a brief moment of unease as the ground gave a jolt.

This follows a massive earthquake in Russia last week, and it seems the planet is keeping everyone on their toes.

On this Saturday night, the earth gave a subtle but stern reminder to millions:
    She’s still in charge.

    🌋 Klyuchevskoy Volcano… Now It’s Your Turn.

After last night’s Earth-shaking 8.8 magnitude quake — a monster that rattled the Ring of Fire and triggered a tsunami across the Pacific — the planet isn’t done yet.

Now, Klyuchevskoy — the largest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere — has erupted.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service:

    > “A descent of burning hot lava is observed on the western slope. Powerful glow above the volcano. Explosions.”

    The Earth isn’t just restless.
    It’s moving.

The 4.9-magnitude quake hit the Golden State around 1 p.m. with the epicenter about 13 miles northeast of Barstow in San Bernardino County, according to the US Geological Survey.

Following the initial rumble, major aftershocks were also felt that measured at 3.5 and 2.7.

Three days of mourning declared in Morocco: Death toll rises near Marrakech after 6.8-magnitude quake

Tremendous loss of life and building structure in Morocco..

    Devastating and developing ..

Rescuers in Morocco are searching for survivors from Friday’s powerful earthquake. More than 2,000 people are confirmed dead, and rescuers warn the toll is still expected to rise.
The worst damage and destruction has been in isolated mountain areas, which are difficult to access. Residents have described whole villages suffering damage and rescuers unable to retrieve bodies from rubble.
In Marrakech, the nearest major city, many residents spent a second night sleeping on the streets, too afraid to return to their homes. Historic sites in the popular tourist destination have been damaged.

    Major quake near Fukushima!

A strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook off the coast near Fukushima, Japan, late Wednesday, prompting a tsunami alert.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami 11 years ago.

This is a developing story.. a

And while we may get ‘fact checked’ it’s interesting to point this out today too: “North Korea has fired an “unknown projectile” which appeared to fail immediately after launch, South Korea’s military said.”

Earthquake: Georgia! “I thought somebody set a bomb outside our bedroom window it was so loud”

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake rattled Georgia overnight, and some people said they didn’t just feel it. Social media users also reported hearing the tremor. “I didn’t feel it but I heard it,” one person wrote on the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. “It was the first one while I was awake! I honestly thought it was a plane or something.”

“I thought somebody set a bomb outside our bedroom window it was so loud,” another person wrote on Twitter. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at about 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. It shook the ground roughly 10 miles northeast of Eton, a town near the Tennessee border.

Officials say the center of the earthquake was shortly more than 10 miles north-northeast of Eton, Georgia in Murray County.

  • The seismic blast heard around the world

The seismic blast heard around the world

Weatherboy Weather has compiled a list of remarkable and almost unbelievable facts about todays volcanic eruption near Tonga…

    From the site:

-the extreme explosive volcanic eruption event was so large and so loud that it was heard in parts of Alaska!

-the blast was so huge it sent a pressure wave around much of the world; it was measured throughout the U.S. East Coast

-the pressure wave appears to be driving the tsunami activity; as the pressure wave crossed into the Caribbean, it created a meteotsunami in parts of the Caribbean including around Puerto Rico

-the blast was detected by sensors at the La Palma volcano in the Canary Islands, north & west off the coast of Africa

-Professor Shane Cronin at the School of Environment at the University of Auckland suggests that eruptive activity at Tonga could continue for weeks or months. According to an assessment of historical eruptions there, these kind of events could be relatively long lasting and not one-off events. As such, there could be a chronic tsunami threat around the globe should eruptions equal to the overnight one continue in the weeks/months ahead.

-satellite data confirms the explosive blast from the volcano entered the stratosphere which will likely impact global weather and climate, although how much remains unknown. Analysis is also ongoing to determine whether or not the mesosphere was pierced by the massive explosion too.

THE LAND OF OZ HAS STRANGE SHAKING GOING ON

Right now Australia is embroiled in political protests over COVID lockdowns (the government there is actually barring media outlets from filming the crowd from helicopters!)

The governmenwt has suspended all construction for 2 weeks.. that will cause some issues now that more than a few places have been dealt damage from really puzzling earthquakes that just should seem to be occurring where they are…

An unusually strong earthquake struck in an unusual portion of Australia (9:15 am September 21, local time), puzzling experts with its intensity and location.

Registering a magnitude 6.0, the earthquake outside of Melbourne is the largest onshore earthquake in Victoria in recorded history.

There have been numerous aftershocks, including a a 4.7 that occurred about 15 minutes after the main shock. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, with a population of roughly 5 million people.

According to press reports, scientists are working to understand why today’s earthquake was as strong as it was and why it struck where it did.

  • Aftershocks continue to rattle Haiti

    Aftershocks continue to rattle Haiti

According to USGS, today’s earthquake occurred as the result of oblique reverse motion along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone which is roughly 75 miles west of the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. “The earthquake occurred at shallow depths on either a reverse fault striking west and dipping to the north with a component of left-lateral slip, or a fault striking southeast and dipping to the southwest with a component of right-lateral slip,” the USGS said in a report. “At the location of the earthquake, the local plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression. The plate boundary in this location accommodates eastward, left-lateral motion of the Caribbean plate relative to the North America plate. Within this context, the earthquake likely occurred on the east-west striking, north dipping fault plane with a component of left-lateral slip.”

Meanwhile the death toll is growing into the hundreds as more buildings, already unstable, become worse as aftershocks continue..

    From Reuters dispatches:

The nearest big town was Les Cayes, where many buildings collapsed or suffered major damage, according to authorities, who said they were searching for survivors.

“I saw bodies being pulled out of the rubble, injured and perhaps dead people,” said Les Cayes resident Jean Marie Simon, 38, who was at the market when the earthquake struck and ran home to see if his family was safe. “I heard cries of pain everywhere I passed through.”
