Tonight show host Fallon on hot seat over rumors of alcoholism and mental abuse

The late night wars just got dark..

Chaos, Comedy, and ‘Crying Rooms’: Inside Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show’Sixteen current and former staffers say Fallon’s erratic behavior spoiled their “dream” of working on The Tonight Show YAHOO ENTERTAINMENT

It was a particularly tense day on the set of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The host, known for his warm and congenial presence onscreen, was acting especially dismissive and irritable during production meetings, a former longtime employee tells Rolling Stone. Then he stumbled through rehearsal in front of a studio audience, who typically sit in on rehearsals for the late-night show. Employees who spoke to Rolling Stone about their experiences working on The Tonight Show say it’s common knowledge behind the scenes that there are “good Jimmy days” — where Fallon’s wit and charm and creativity are on full display — and “bad Jimmy days.” This was a “bad Jimmy day,” according to the employee.

There are reports of employees losing weight.. losing hair.. being on eggshells about Fallons temper and willingness to fire someone at a moments notice.

The Stone piece goes on to detail rumors about Fallon and alcoholism .. it appears to be enough that Fallon is now seemingly a target of a Tonight Show cancellation…

The Stone piece is a 20 minute read of intensity for Fallon ..

  • World rocked as Prince’s “drug dealer” speaks to British press

World rocked as Prince’s “drug dealer” speaks to British press

The UK DAILY MAIL scooped TMZ with this: The drug dealer who said he provided substances to Prince for 25 years has spoken!!

The DAILY MAIL summarizes the information received from ‘DOCTOR D’ like this:

    • Prince‘s former drug dealer, who asked to be named only as Doctor D, revealed the full extent of the late-star’s secret drug addiction
    • Doctor D revealed the singer would spend up to $40,000 a time on six-month supplies of Dilaudid pills and Fentanyl patches
    • Prince regularly bought drugs from Doctor D between 1984 and 2008
    • The dealer said the musician suffered crippling stage fright and could not get on stage and perform without the drugs
    • Doctor D said: ‘He was always a pill man – that’s why nobody ever saw him do drugs. He never shot up, or snorted cocaine’
    • Prince was found dead on Thursday at his home in Minnesota just days after sources claimed he overdosed on the opiate Percocet

Whether the information turns out to be true or false, the star is dead..

The strange times we live in produce quick conspiracy theories. Only moments, it seemed, after Prince died, Mancow appeared on Alex Jones to say how either it was a ‘hit’ or the chemtrail cold did it. Then TMZ raced other rags by exclaiming that Prince died of an OD..

    And now Doctor D.

    And the DAILY MAIL.

Prince has been cremated. Before it happened, an autopsy was performed…

When that’s revealed, we will know. Until then Doctor D and company can tell us..
  • The Centralia chronicles

    The Centralia chronicles

The other day we reported on a story making its way around entertainment circles: Centralia is going to be a potential dark drama picked up by NBC!

Now there is more information, courtesy of a good friend on the website SKOOKNEWS.COM ..

Someone I know very well did a great interview with the creator and producer of the possible upcoming documentary..

Meredith Averill is a native of Pottsville, and was always fascinated by Centralia.. As reported from the interview:

She noted that “Centralia” will not be a documentary but a story inspired by the town and the people that still live there. The story will be based on the same events that took place over the years, but Averill will add her own elements to the story.

In reality, Centralia currently has around 5 residents, but in the story, Centralia will have roughly 100 residents. Averill wants to portray the current Centralians as heroes who still have hope in saving their town. There will be an element of sadness felt but you will want to be rooting for them to succeed.

Within the timeline of the show, the government is threatening eminent domain to take the town but in the shows timeline, it has not taken it YET. The government’s reason for removing the residence of the town will be for their safety, due to the fire burning below, but the feds will have ulterior motives. The tourism draw of the town will also come into play, where they will have their own walking tour. Graffiti Highway will be included in the show. Averill also said characters will be unaware of the “evil” lurking below.

Even more, according to the interview, Averill has worked on a number of projects in the past. But this, she told the site, is giving her the most widespread attention she has ever received and generated one of the biggest responses..

    Lucy wants XENA

Lucy Lawless is positive about a XENA reboot.. she’d love to see it happen..

    MORE..

“If there’s anything current going on, we’re not involved — we being me, Rob [Tapert and] Sam [Raimi],” she told EW.com on Friday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills. “But [NBC] could be doing it without us; they have the right to, don’t they? … I’d love to see it happen and I know that NBC wants to do it, but they’re just trying to find a way and a time.”
“I really couldn’t live that life,” she told the site. “I look back, I’ve got all sort of wear and tear from that lifestyle. That’s just what happens to human bodies when they get used a certain way a lot. I actually couldn’t do it. I’m 47, but there’s somebody great out there.”

  • Dumpster diving for Dave

    Dumpster diving for Dave

It has been a wild week on CBS TV .. the exit of David Letterman, some would argue, means a lot. Others may say it’s simply an overdue act and that the third placed not king of late night should have left fifteen years ago when the Internet began rolling on with viral videos–without him..

What is clear today though is this: The set that David Letterman used and said goodbye on was quickly disposed of.. Some pieces, CBS says, were kept safe and transported to other places.. The George Washington bridge was carefully loaded into a truck. But most other pieces of the fake skyline of New York City that was behind him was simply thrown into a dumpster..
    AND..
Fans reacted by dumpster diving for pieces of television history.

    [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sAWFbH41pQ]

Does the set throw-away say anything about a culture? A throwaway culture perhaps?

Think of this. For weeks during the run up to the final LATE SHOW, we were told television history was going to be made.. that this exit will be as memorable as Johnny Carson’s.. That David Letterman was saying goodbye and along with him an era of TV was going too… CBS had a special on to celebrate his LATE SHOW time—-a lackluster special if you ask me..

But the very day that Letterman exits, fans leaving the final show are seeing the stagehands bringing out pieces of the Ed Sullivan theater and throwing them into the garbage.
All to make way for Stephen Colbert—a person I still think CBS mistakingly put into a gig that he will not succeed at..

Yes, I think there are some cultural messages here. Some elements of who ‘we’ are in a way.. something deep and profound exists in watching CBS trash the star they paid millions to, and then to the fans diving into wreckage to ensure they keep a piece of the millionaire’s fake set.

    All of this means something.
I just can’t figure out yet what it is..

  • WHY DAVE MATTERED TO ME

    WHY DAVE MATTERED TO ME

I am going to share a secret never before uttered: I copied all of my comedy material from someone else in grade school..
See, I was a bit of a class clown at times. I came up with some of my own stuff, my own jokes. By high school, there were times I even worked blue. But from around 1990 through the end of the 20th century, I was a hardcore David Letterman fan.

I would set my VCR nightly to tape every show. Those very tapes still exist in a box, tucked away deep in a closet in my bedroom. The day after, I would catalog the show and put notes on the front as whether they included my favorite bits. The guy under the stairs. Dave making toast.. Mujibar.. all of those bits and skits.. I don’t know if they would even work if I tried to watch them.. Quite frankly, I don’t even know where I’d find a VCR..

But David Letterman provided me some of the best ideas to translate jokes into my own life. In high school, ‘hallway races’ were popular because I loved the bit about sidewalk races that Letterman used to do. Other profound moments of teenage comedy often came because of inspiration I found on the Letterman show. Or shows.

I even was able to get a hold of old LATE NIGHT shows around my junior year in high school at a yard sale–skits that even if kids were staying up to see LATE SHOW, they would have never had access to. No YOUTUBE back then.. no ‘viral’ nonsense.

Just David Letterman, nightly with sarcastic wit..
Things changed for me a bit after high school.. I loved the post 9/11 show that Letterman did. But I soured on his humor. He seemed to give up.. he phoned it in. After his sex scandal, I sort of abandoned the new Letterman and just safely kept the ‘old Letterman’ in my head.

I have nostalgia for David Letterman for a number of reasons. Not only did his brand of humor inspire my own and make it safe to make the jokes I wanted to make, but he also got me through a number of dark times in my own life. Just knowing that he, the master of comedy, also suffered from moments of exhaustion and personal annihilation, depression, and harmful habits, made me feel just a bit better. It made me feel in some way like I knew David Letterman. And I think most of the fans who loved him–those who stayed with him until this bitter end–felt like they knew him too.

The Letterman fan isn’t the over achiever. Instead, a Letterman fan is the underdog. Smarter than his co-workers or bosses, but somehow ignored by most. Though a Letterman fan may be considered a clown, deep down that clownish exterior is simply masking the intelligent and moral person beneath. The man or woman who wants to learn about the universe, and does not accept a concept that we have already learned it. The man or woman who questions authority but agrees with the premise that we need it. And the man or woman who just wants to live life poking and prodding powers that be who so often simply want to force all to have their brand of humor…

    Yes, nostalgia is building..
Sleepless nights were created by David Letterman. Inspiration .. a new brand of TV that thumbed a nose at the phonies behind the script writing. That was David Letterman. And also a reason why he was the constant underdog.. People usually happily accept the reality created for them–the Jay Lenos and the viral videos.. Even the Fallons with friendly skits. Dave–the honest Dave from the 80s and 90s–put all the trash out for all to see..

This is a strange year, in a sense..
For one, Brian Williams’ actions led to his potential downfall–no NBC decision made yet.
Jon Stewart, a staple and visionary in the world of political satire, is hanging up the cue cards.
    Jay Leno is gone.
    Conan O’Brien is marginalized.
    David Letterman is saying goodbye.

There is a clear change in television–pop culture itself is altering. There seemingly is a new generation taking the helm. One that gives us happy go lucky humor that safety tucks us in at night. Gone is the wit and sarcasm that required careful thought for it to become funny. Instead quick laughs have replaced that.. Viral videos led to the Letterman downfall. Irony, after all, doesn’t work in a 10 second viral way..

I remember one fall night in 1994. It was late September, and my family and then girlfriend had just come home from a local fair as autumn waned. It was a beautiful night and slightly too cold for that time of year. It was a Friday night and I have no reason to go to bed early. That night, I remember distinctly, being overjoyed that I was home that night before 11:35 pm on the East Coast. My local news had ended with then weatherman Barry Finn giving his rooftop forecast.. and the Paul Schaffer orchestra opened up LATE SHOW with David Letterman. At that moment, at that time, all seemed fine and right.

All of these years later–21 years since that night as a matter of fact–Letterman is waving bye for the final time as WORLDWIDE PANTS and his LATE SHOW bid farewell..

This is a big pop culture moment, perhaps as large and important a time in TV as Johnny Carson giving his last golf swing as Bill Clinton began his first year in office.

    But why is this big?
Because TV, itself, is changing. Perhaps in some sense over.
And maybe, in another, just beginning.

David Letterman is a 20th century boy who had borrowed time in the 21st. But my nostalgia and love for his show stayed in the 20th century.

And I have the aging tapes to prove it.

    DAVID LETTERMAN.
    Thank you.

A final note: Christmas without Darlene Love will just not be the same…………..

  • THE TRUE HORROR OF ‘LAZARUS EFFECT’

THE TRUE HORROR OF ‘LAZARUS EFFECT’

The LAZARUS EFFECT showcases the newfound popularity of reanimation horror.. WIRED’s Jordan Cruccihola examines this premise in an article posted today, saying

“Reanimation horror is not the most populated of sub-genres. We’ve surely had more cabins in the woods, unbeatable super killers, and haunted houses. But reanimation has a special place in our hearts thanks to its scientific roots. Sure, it’s all ridiculous science with little to no connection to reality, but there are still a lot more lab coats than in your standard-issue slasher. And if there’s one thing we wish there were more of in horror flicks, it’s lab coats..”

An the author is dead on right! The LAZARUS EFFECT, being released this weekend for public consumption, has an interesting premise: A group of medical students find a way to bring the dead back to life. It’s a horror classification, but easily travails into the science fiction category as you read more about the idea.. And really, we are living in this world.

This horror encapsulates perfectly our fears about future shock, the advancement of medical technology, and how we are on the verge of some amazing but possibly scary things.. The movie is getting intensely bad reviews, not only from the paid informants in entertainment rags, but also the masses who have already been privileged to see and write about it.

The common thread is that this is a rip-off of FLATLINERS. Maybe that’s true, but it’s also bringing to theaters the concept of the future and how it can be dangerous if in the wrong hands.. there’s a cultural allegory here if you pay attention. A commentary on society..

LAZARUS is not expected to rise to the top of the heap in the movie theaters over the next few days, but it is predicted to do fine for its genre for a winter weekend..

  • The message of IT FOLLOWS explored

The message of IT FOLLOWS explored

IT FOLLOWS trailer lays out rules for upcoming horror film.

The movie is highly anticipated.. it’s a modern movie about the dangers of teenage sexual promiscuity. Instead of exchanging bodily fluids that lead to an STD, the couple involved will become victims of a sexually transmitted CURSE.. that follows.

I have read a number of accounts and early spoiler information about this movie–it looks to be one of the freshest and most creative horror movies that we will be getting in 2015.Some have even called it a ‘masterpiece‘!

Reviews like that often don’t happen in the mainstream world for this genre..The UK INDEPENDENT’s Geoffrey Macnab reviewed the movie with a positive four out of five star conclusion.. Macnab wrote,

“The ingenious new teen horror film It Follows will intrigue, puzzle and trouble audiences by turns.”

    And this:

“This may be a horror movie but it has some of the same feel as Larry Clark’s cautionary tales about mixed-up, laidback American kids. It is shot as artfully as Clark’s films and, like them, portrays a self-enclosed teen society in which parents and teachers don’t intrude.”

For many years, any watcher of horror either random or astute would know that films often play on the fears of the youth.. Jason Vorhees killed the immoral, in a sense he was the ultimate champion of religious fervor–slaughtering the promiscuous party animal teens that skipped foreplay and went right to the deed at Camp Crystal Lake.

Perhaps no one saw the irony in his kills, the idea that he was the biblical old testament God reigning judgement down on those who sinned.. This new film seems to keep with that same idea: Sin and sex.

In IT FOLLOWS, the predator and villain can only be seen by those who have been cursed with the sexual relations that spread it.. An keeping with my long held notion that horror movies, in any given time (and professional wrestling), perfectly symbolize the current state of modern pop culture for that generation, Macnab paints a similar picture in his INDEPENDENT review, writing:

“It Follows plays not just on the kids’ ambivalence about their own sexual desires, but also on their disgust at the idea of their parents’ sexual lives. The Freudian elements sit alongside action sequences (a car crashing in a cornfield, an explosive final-reel stand-off at the local swimming pool). This is also a love story of sorts. Paul (Keir Gilchrist) is besotted with Jay. He is just a little too geeky for her to consider as a suitor but he is persistent and loyal. His innocent devotion is in very stark contrast to the depravity that surrounds the teenagers..”

  • Rain keeps falling, down. After 30 years THE BREAKFAST CLUB still matters..

Rain keeps falling, down. After 30 years THE BREAKFAST CLUB still matters..

30 years after the BREAKFAST CLUB, it is coming back to some theaters.. It is interesting now to go back and see what TIME magazine, then in 1985, said about the classic movie.

One fun concept is to look at what will never happen again, thanks to modern technology..  It was a movie for its time and of its time, but yet somehow stands the test of time. Yes, outfits are different.. the technology is limited..

But there’s one common thing shared by that of all generations: Our attempt to fit in, find our niche, and create a ‘character’ out of our reality. In the BREAKFAST CLUB, the most amazing part is that all of the characters, by the end of their Saturday detention, actually discover who they really are because they are faced with the clear vacancy of others judging them. I bet, though, by Monday their egos were back and they ‘role’ resumed. But it’s all fiction, right?
