M. Night Shyamalan: People pleasing can be dangerous

M. Night Shyamalan: People pleasing can be dangerous
Your movies can please some of the people some of the time.
But LADY IN THE WATER, THE HAPPENING, and THE VILLAGE will please none of the people all of the time…

This happens quite often.
From someone I know who used to work in a theater, sometimes it’s done intentionally ..
While I am not implying that was the case this time, it certainly seems to be quite a big accident..

VARIETY was the first to report news of this hours ago, before it was picked up by several horror fan sites and other news outlets.. Janko Roettgers from VARIETY did the reporting. No need to paraphrase when the quote will suffice:
Be prepared to be scared: AMC Networks has begun an invite-only beta test of their horror-centric OTTvideo service Shudder. The service offers streaming access to full-length ad-free horror movies, and wants to eventually launch on a number of TV streaming devices. Its technology is being powered by and Softbank-owned online video platform Dramafever.
Consumers who previously signed up on Shudder’s public pre-launch website have started to get invites over the last 24 hours, and can now join the service for two free months. After that, Shudder is charging $4.99 a month, or $49.99 for a full year. An AMC Networks spokesperson confirmed the beta test Tuesday, but said that there’s no firm date yet for Shudder coming out of beta.
Genre specific content is not a new idea.. But coming more to fruition in recent years. Undoubtedly this idea will spark interest in horror fans..

Want to know why CHARLIE CHARLIE came out no where?
It was all fake.
The GALLOWS is coming.. and that is apparently highly associated with the CHARLIE CHARLIE challenge.
You will have to take my word for this, but a few days ago I actually said that this whole NET phenom was just a Hollywood movie game.. And boom.. E! reports that very thing.
CHARLIE CHARLIE?….your pencils are dull..
Charlie Charlie.. the paranormal lull……….

The world of horror is remembering a legend of the genre tonight.. Betsy Palmer–best known by fans as the woman who played JASON VORHEES’ mother in Friday the 13th 1 and 2–passed away at the age of 88 Friday night of natural causes..
Her longtime manager, Brad Lemack said that Palmer went into the next realm while in hospice care center in Connecticut.
Palmer had appeared in films, on Broadway and in TV shows for decades before she took the role of Mrs. Voorhees. She would say in later years that she only took the role in that first film because she wanted the money to buy a new car
Her LEGACY website is already filling up with memories..
And most horror fans will hold a special place in their hearts for the woman who just loved her son, no matter the monster he was..

The POLTERGEIST remake is released today.. For better or worse..
And while some horror fans may be enthusiastic about the prospects of the classic film, modernized, being in theaters, others are decrying a lack of imagination, and over abundant use of CGI, and a sloppy uninspired mess of a movie..
You can find the reviews yourself–the review roundup on ROTTEN TOMATOES isn’t pretty, with the film scoring less than half positive press with writers..
Horror site BLOODY DISGUSTING checked in with its own review of the movie, with the site lamenting the overuse of special effects, the acting that just doesn’t seem to be convincing, and a climax of the movie suffering from what Kalyn Corrigan called fake-looking spirits..
The movie, it can be said, doesn’t prove itself when compared to the classic from the early 1980s.. I frankly still can’t understand why this movie was picked from the litter of horror films as the target for a re-do.
There was almost no need, perhaps less of a need than even Rob Zombie’s messups of the HALLOWEEN films. POLTERGEIST, circa 1982, is a movie about family, love, spirits, death, mystery, and illusion.
The modern fare seems more bent on cheap scares and lousy special effects that don’t do anything but give a jump or two in a movie theater. Certainly no long-lasting nostalgia will be created by this remake..
Poorly done, from the reviews I have read, and perhaps something not at all worth it in theaters..

This is what greeted me today *(and others)* when I logged into TUMBLR today to update COAL SPEAKER..
What am I afraid of, the POLTERGEIST Tumblr account wants to know?
That’s easy.
I am afraid of product placement, the ability social networking and corporate sponsorship to merge together thanks to the YAHOO! acquisition of TUMBLR.
Oh, and one more thing: I am afraid of bad remakes of classic movies.
And I was also sort of afraid of the priest from POLTERGEIST 2, but I will wait until the sequel TUMBLR account asks me what I am afraid of in two years to relay more information about that.

Yet another film is getting this line: The ‘best horror movie of the year’ .. it’s only May.
The trailer for acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro is being celebrated.. even being called ”viral” (as so many things are these days) .. This is the official description of the movie:
When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.
And that all sounds well and good.
But horror movie of the year?
It has competition with IT FOLLOWS .
The only helpful thing for PEAK vs others: It gets a near Halloween 2015 release in mid-October. Just as the mood turns paranormal ..

When horror movies meet reality, we are there to contemplate it..
There were lots of ‘purge’ stories making the round on Google. The word was trending since the Baltimore bedlam began.. that is because groups of teens, we are told, were posting signs saying that there would be a ‘purge’ on Monday night. We saw the riots that developed. The BALTIMORE SUN reports about how cops think the purge notion and plans came straight from the horror movie.
This is not the first time the term purge has been in the news. In 2014, several ‘purge’ fears were prevalent after rumors circulated in cities across American of similar plans for violence, without any materializing.
The movie THE PURGE, however, is now directly being BLAMED by some for the violence in the city..
This time in Baltimore, perhaps, as opposed to the past ‘purge’ meme warnings, violence did materialize. But to blame a movie? Perhaps this is just a chance for the media to drum up more fear over the summer of hell that may be coming..

A good list has been compiled by the AV Club about how to make good horror..
And it’s good horror that has been lacking for too long of a time, besides a few gems that have popped up through thebyears..
This article linked here could help any upcoming writers or directors create a new masterpiece of our time and genre..
I am perfectly fine that the Era of torture porn appears to be coming to a close..
Of course as I say that a popular Go fund Me still exists for 30, Rob Zombie’ upcoming film. .
The masterpieces of yesterday may never get repeated–even though we keep on trying to recreate them over and over again with remakes and redos.. Instead, directors and writers should update the standards, refocus on what is scaring this new generation.. And what isn’t.. Slashers lost their effect.. Our reality is comprised instead of trustworthy men in business suits ruining the world. That’s scary..
Equally scary: The future of robots and nanotechnology.. science fiction and horror can merge in a beautiful and well-made with under the direction of the right producer.
And maybe even more, horror movies should teach lessons again. Become societal commentaries again. Like DAWN OF THE DEAD. That movie held a revolutionary message. Even some say the same for FRIDAY the 13th, calling it a commentary on the Reagan era and the rise of the Religious Right. The SAW films capitalized on America’s newfound love of torture after 9/11..
And now today, as this is written, IT FOLLOW and BABADOOK are celebrated not only in alternative sources but also mainstream press as horror films worth seeing.
That’s a positive.
Horror can be as important as drama or any other genre.. As a matter of fact, even more so: It’s the primal fears, the instincts of humanity, the hopes and prayers of survival.. the scares of what we cannot control. All rolled into one hour and a half (or more) of visual and emotional scares.
Today, IT FOLLOWS is released in a number of theaters–but not nearly as many as I wish. With success, of course, that could change.
Earlier this week, I wrote about the high praise of IT FOLLOWS. And the positive press hasn’t stopped there, the shower of love of this movie has only continued. And that’s a good thing if you’re a fan of what this genre SHOULD be about.
For years I have been the anti-horror movie horror fan, usually celebrating movies opposite of what pop culture says they love.. as an emotional and loving father, I am disturbed by many of the films in the horror genre that some praise. I get a little queasy when other sites write stories talking about the ‘best death scenes’ and the ‘kills’ of films.. But please don’t get me wrong, there’s enough room in any genre for subsets of the best.
The real reason that horror, to me, is still important and worthwhile to follow: Because when done right it can put a spotlight on pop culture or societal troubles, drench it with attention, and change the world.. I really do believe that.
