    THE ABCS OF SENTENCING

THE ABCs OF DEATH case settled..AP:COLUMBUS, Ohio — A former substitute teacher convicted of showing a movie including graphic sex and violence to a high school class was sentenced on Wednesday to 90 days in jail.Sheila Kearns, who was convicted in January of four felony counts, apologized in court, saying she hadn’t watched the movie before showing it to her Spanish classes at Columbus’ East High School in April 2013. The movie, “The ABCs of Death,” consists of 26 chapters, each depicting some form of grisly death and representing a letter of the alphabet, such as “E is for Exterminate,” ”O is for Orgasm” and “T is for Toilet.”She faced a greater amount of prison time than this..I still don’t even understand how she is getting prison time for showing a movie that released in various venues and one that most people in the class probably already saw in some form or another at home.. A firing justified? Yes. Prison time? I still don’t get that..

THE ABCs OF DEATH case settled..

    AP:

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A former substitute teacher convicted of showing a movie including graphic sex and violence to a high school class was sentenced on Wednesday to 90 days in jail.
Sheila Kearns, who was convicted in January of four felony counts, apologized in court, saying she hadn’t watched the movie before showing it to her Spanish classes at Columbus’ East High School in April 2013. The movie, “The ABCs of Death,” consists of 26 chapters, each depicting some form of grisly death and representing a letter of the alphabet, such as “E is for Exterminate,” ”O is for Orgasm” and “T is for Toilet.”

She faced a greater amount of prison time than this..
I still don’t even understand how she is getting prison time for showing a movie that released in various venues and one that most people in the class probably already saw in some form or another at home.. A firing justified? Yes. Prison time? I still don’t get that..

We previously reported about the Kearns case on this website and have continuously questioned why the outcry over the case even took place.

Now, the chapter is closed with the sentencing today.. One I still don’t get completely.

But no one else seems to be a little queasy with an African American teacher being thrown into jail for showing a horror movie–a legal horror movie–to a class.

AS a matter of fact, media sources are busy playing up the ‘horror’ of her crime, as evidenced by insane headlines running across the NET:

  • The message of IT FOLLOWS explored

The message of IT FOLLOWS explored

IT FOLLOWS trailer lays out rules for upcoming horror film.

The movie is highly anticipated.. it’s a modern movie about the dangers of teenage sexual promiscuity. Instead of exchanging bodily fluids that lead to an STD, the couple involved will become victims of a sexually transmitted CURSE.. that follows.

I have read a number of accounts and early spoiler information about this movie–it looks to be one of the freshest and most creative horror movies that we will be getting in 2015.Some have even called it a ‘masterpiece‘!

Reviews like that often don’t happen in the mainstream world for this genre..The UK INDEPENDENT’s Geoffrey Macnab reviewed the movie with a positive four out of five star conclusion.. Macnab wrote,

“The ingenious new teen horror film It Follows will intrigue, puzzle and trouble audiences by turns.”

    And this:

“This may be a horror movie but it has some of the same feel as Larry Clark’s cautionary tales about mixed-up, laidback American kids. It is shot as artfully as Clark’s films and, like them, portrays a self-enclosed teen society in which parents and teachers don’t intrude.”

For many years, any watcher of horror either random or astute would know that films often play on the fears of the youth.. Jason Vorhees killed the immoral, in a sense he was the ultimate champion of religious fervor–slaughtering the promiscuous party animal teens that skipped foreplay and went right to the deed at Camp Crystal Lake.

Perhaps no one saw the irony in his kills, the idea that he was the biblical old testament God reigning judgement down on those who sinned.. This new film seems to keep with that same idea: Sin and sex.

In IT FOLLOWS, the predator and villain can only be seen by those who have been cursed with the sexual relations that spread it.. An keeping with my long held notion that horror movies, in any given time (and professional wrestling), perfectly symbolize the current state of modern pop culture for that generation, Macnab paints a similar picture in his INDEPENDENT review, writing:

“It Follows plays not just on the kids’ ambivalence about their own sexual desires, but also on their disgust at the idea of their parents’ sexual lives. The Freudian elements sit alongside action sequences (a car crashing in a cornfield, an explosive final-reel stand-off at the local swimming pool). This is also a love story of sorts. Paul (Keir Gilchrist) is besotted with Jay. He is just a little too geeky for her to consider as a suitor but he is persistent and loyal. His innocent devotion is in very stark contrast to the depravity that surrounds the teenagers..”

  • The new GHOST FACE

Wes Craven tweeted an image tonight of what the new ghost face mask will look like..

It glows. it’s blue. It may be used for an upcoming MTV series..

Regardless of its use, the mask is certainly much different than the 1990s incarnation of the famous SCREAM painting..

Feedback has been critical.. divided. Some like. Some hate.
The white face of the original SCREAM series is iconic.. even today, kids on Halloween scout towns with the attire–most likely not even knowing how scary a scene with Drew Barrymore answering a giant portable phone was in the late 20th century..

    This mask though?
I personally think it looks like a Dollar Store version of the original mask.. a bad replica.

    Maybe just a bad photo..
    TIME WILL TELL.
Tomorrow: The new GHOST FACE debuts at FUN WORLD.

    According to Wes Craven..

  • John Carpenter said only one Halloween was necessary. The HORROR REPORT absolutely agrees

DEADLINE: John Carpenter Q&A: Why ‘Halloween’ Didn’t Need Sequels & What Scares The Master Of Horror »

John Carpenter is a hard to get man.. I have myself attempted to interview him on several occasions.. I typically get a very friendly and kind response from someone with his public relations team.

And why would he want to talk to a little old website anyway.. He’s the master of horror.. the man who, whether he tried it or not, changed culture in 1978 when he created a low budget slasher flick about a babysitter killer that someone intelligently named ‘Halloween.’

And the genius—pure genius—of buying a William Shatner mask and painting it white..

While Carpenter was too busy to talk to me, the fine wealthy folks at DEADLINE were able to snag a few words with him..

Carpenter told DEADLINE what I have heard before in a number of places: That HALLOWEEN was a load of fun to create and the budget, so low, was a crapshoot for them.. they were just young people having a blast creating a horror movie. They did not set out to change horror, or create two generations of movies that would be forever modeled on Michael Myers. But they did just that..

Carpenter also joked a bit about Shatner’s face being the face of the madman who stalks movies sequel after sequel:

There were two options – one was a clown mask, which was a better mask, but the Captain Kirk mask was altered, spray painted, eye holes cut, with the hair. I don’t know if he knows the story. I met him recently at one of these conventions. I walked up and introduced myself. Without looking up he says, ‘Nice to meet you.’ The guy’s 80 years old, I’ll just leave him alone. You know, he was busy and probably worried about something else.

But speaking of sequels—and this is the real point that I concur wholeheartedly with Carpenter on—Halloween did not need sequels.  On the subject of the constantly recycling of Carpenter’s idea:

I didn’t think there was any more story, and I didn’t want to do it again. All of my ideas were for the first Halloween – there shouldn’t have been any more! I’m flattered by the fact that people want to remake them, but they remake everything these days, so it doesn’t make me that special. But Michael Myers was an absence of character. And yet all the sequels are trying to explain that. That’s silliness – it just misses the whole point of the first movie, to me. He’s part person, part supernatural force. The sequels rooted around in motivation. I thought that was a mistake. However, I couldn’t stop them from making sequels. So my agents said, ‘Why don’t you become an executive producer and you can share the revenue?’ But I had to write the second movie, and every night I sat there and wrote with a six pack of beer trying to get through this thing. And I didn’t do a very good job, but that was it. I couldn’t do any more.

This is something I have also long thought..

While it was before my time and I only discovered the Halloween films years after adults were squirming in theaters seeing them, I always felt that Halloween 2 felt rushed. Sort of off key, and even more, just a way to bookend a story and end it. Of course we know it did not end at all, but instead kept on chugging into oblivion—and to a point where it does not even matter anymore when a new Halloween is coming out. By the way, if you didn’t hear, a new Halloween is coming out next year.

Carpenter’s Halloween 3, though despised by so many horror fans, is one of my favorites.. It’s creative and fun, a but bizarre, but it has the freakiest song in horror: That mind-numbing ditty about rushing home for the ‘big giveaway’ at 9..

Halloween’s original ending, with Michael Myers vanishing after a murderous night in Haddenfield, was the perfect ending.. it could have been left there—the ever foreboding boogeyman who stalks the night on Halloween, lurks in shadows, and hides where your fears are deepest.. Halloween should have ended at one film..

Instead we had non stop rubbish propelled at us from Akkads, Zombies, and  Busta Rhymes.. So sad..

    HORROR AT THE BOX..

    $19 MIL OR $29???

    DEVELOPING

The latest information from insiders has the paranormal game flick scaring $8mil on Friday night screenings.. There have been some awful reviews of the movie and even worse CinemaScore grades.. But it may not stop people during this time of year from seeing the film..

Another strong showing from Saturday night..

At this point, according to experts, the movie is on track to finish around $19 mil..

The HORROR REPORT predicts: $21 mi, downgraded from an earlier $23 mil prediction..

Either way the film’s success may not be due to a good storyline, but instead an exceptionally good release schedule for a film about the paranormal..

31 DAYS OF HORROR MOVIES IN ONE LIST

A complete listing of every horror movie that is airing starting today through Halloween. And a few more on November 1.

I did not come up with the list.. credit must be given where credit is due, and the ATLANTIC was the source for this information.

The listing is epic. (though I am a little sketchy on calling some of these, like JURASSIC PARK, a horror.)

    Enjoy.

    All times are Eastern.

  • Behind the scenes.. and deep in the mind

Behind the scenes.. and deep in the mind

Remember, during that horror movie you’re watching, it is all just make believe.
If you still don’t believe it, consider this: Behind the scenes photographs of horror flicks .. Hannibal Lector eating not flesh, but a french fry.. Michael Myers enjoying a Dr. Pepper.. And yes, even the gang ‘chillin’ with Freddy K..

A lot of the behind the scenes images are fun and frivolous, but one stood out to me as a little more painful, a little deeper: Heath Ledger, alone, walking with the JOKER mask in hand.

A little interesting side note on that Joker mask used. In the 1960s, Ceser Romero starred in one of the BATMAN shows, called THE JOKER IS WILD. During a scene in the program, Romero is wearing that same clown mask before it is taken off and his true identity is revealed to the viewing television audience. The homage by the use of that mask was to Romero’s version of the villain..
The BUZZFEED list   is a great way to pass the time, have a few chuckles, and see some irony. There’s even an image of Linda Blair next to her robot double—the one whose head turned around while green vomit spewed.
But sorry to be the buzzkill on the fun BUZZFEED lst, but the image of Hedger is a true reminder of the ‘behind the scenes’ hell that often takes place in the mind of an actor.
As a matter of fact, in 2013, we saw how immersed Ledger became in the Joker behind the scenes when his haunting private diary was revealed. And yes, some even hinted as "satanic influences of the JOKER" as the blame for Ledger’s death, and others spoke of a "DARK KNIGHT curse" that probably isn’t true, but certainly is thought provoking to consider.
Nonetheless, there’s lot of behind the scenes images we don’t see. Wish we could.
But until then.. who’s that Joker?

  • THE FORGOTTEN SCREAM QUEEN

    THE FORGOTTEN SCREAM QUEEN

ESCAPIST picks: The Scream Queens: 4 Actresses Who Defined A Horror Genre »

    Marilyn Burns—RIP. I agree.. a legend..

Jamie Lee Curtis, another agreeable selection by the ESCAPIST.

Janet Leigh from PSYCHO.. Good pick, didn’t think of that one.

But the fourth should have been one of the best: Heather Langenkamp from NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.. I often think her role as Nancy defined the 1980s comeback kick and set into motion a generation of feminist strength. I am serious about that.. I believe she was an inspiration for a lot of girls.. Her roles in the Freddy films she appeared in should never be forgotten..

Doesn’t get any better than Nancy..

  • THE MARKET VALUE OF HORROR

    THE MARKET VALUE OF HORROR

How the Market Affects What Horror Makes it to Hollywood »

Recent torture pornographers such as Eli Roth arguably have aligned themselves with 1970s American horror auteurs not only to legitimize their work but to cash in on their rebel credibility.

The NEW REPUBLIC article is an interesting way to follow up on my previous essay written earlier this week about horror movies.. I actually made the point that horror movies, in general, are a lot less scary in our current reality—and even more, who wants to look at torture porn films and slasher gore galore when you can turn on the nightly news and see edited versions of beheading videos and then download the real deal yourself should you wish to..?

The NEW REPUBLIC article follows how the market—and current events—lead to the horror we see in cinema..  Author Yo Zushi writes,

It wasn’t long before horror directors such as Eli Roth were claiming that their work could trace a direct lineage to the “war on terror”. “I really try to load up the films with ideas,” Roth insisted, citing with pride the university seminars discussing his Hostel series as “a post-9/11 response to Iraq and torture”. The ecstatic violence of that franchise at first attracted the scorn of many reviewers, who dismissed it as “torture porn,” but Roth’s articulate justifications for his on-screen cruelties seem to have won over the academy.

This strategy of media management isn’t new—Night of the Living Dead’s George Romero said in 1973 that his pioneering zombie film was intended as “a statement about society,” and its semi-documentary style and black hero, murdered by white authorities, served to corroborate his claim. Yet, presenting Romero with a lifetime achievement award in 2009, Quentin Tarantino characterised his movies as consisting of “heart-stopping violence, explosive bloodshed, undead flesh-eaters and dismembered ghouls.” So does the political content really give life to the films, or is it ancillary to the thrills of gore and suspense? And does the meaning that a filmmaker attaches to his lurid tales ultimately matter?

    And more:

Although it would be a folly to dismiss interpretative readings of the horror genre entirely, I am skeptical of the claims of critics and filmmakers alike that a zombie or torture movie is primarily to be approached as political allegory. That attitude seems to conform to an apologetic attitude to art, in which the work serves, at best, a medicinal function: the Hostel series is valid because it negotiates, even purges, society’s anxieties about Abu Ghraib, and so on. Yet Eli Roth is not Noam Chomsky. And who thinks about Nixon or Vietnam when confronted with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I don’t know if the  movies are always set to be political allegory, or if the interpretation comes after to defend the amount of horrific violence that often accompanies torture porn flicks. But I know this, and will defend the notion to the end: Pick any horror movie of any decade and you will get a pretty decent idea of what that time’s people, thought patterns, and headlines were like.

I have a few friends that disavow all things horror—people who avoid the genre at all costs. I myself avoid the torture porn flicks simply because I’d rather a deeper scare than one which simply attacks my sense of decency.  But I believe that horror films are from the rough end of town, and they are emblematic of the life and times we are from..

    Oh, and wrestling does, too.

  • As if 5 wrongs turns weren’t enough

As if 5 wrongs turns weren’t enough

Get ready for the sixth installment in the not so much anticipated WRONG TURN collection..

This go around, the newest WRONG TURN will occur on DVD and BluRay. On Halloween.. without a box office release, logic would state that this should be the end of a series.

Something even more exciting for those happy by the propects of a DTV release of a film, the movie will feature unknown actors who want to make a name for themselves. This will undoubtedly lead to a future fun movie night as the HORROR REPORT had this past weekend..

Regardless of future plans, some may welcome with open arms the newest WRONG TURN.

    Some..
