Monday Night RAW featured a traditional ten bell salute to Mean Gene Okurland, the announcer who so many of us grew up hearing the voice of on Saturday mornings and pay per view events.. After the silence, the noise of the WWE live show was burst open by the REAL AMERICAN theme.. Hulk Hogan began his entrance, in character, into the ring..

The nostalgic homage to WWE past
The video from WWE:[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ewW7TZOsw&w=460&h=315]One could wonder how many people in that event knew the Hogan theme as it began.. or did it take a little for the 1980s and 90s to come back to the mind..As Hogan went through his WWE style eulogy for Mean Gene, he mentioned how angels on high are entering the WWE announcer into the gates.. how the Ultimate Warrior and the Macho Man are enjoying a match.. how Andre the Giant is officiating.. The names went on and the Hulkster’s words forced nostalgia for those good old days of wrestling to come rushing back.Industry watchers know the level of change that Vince McMahan and Linda have brought over the years. Some would say wrought over the years.. The changes are abundant. From the old days of multiple federations across the East Coast into the WWF, before the animals rights group sued and the F turned into Entertainment.. just about when the Federation figured it was time to ‘entertain’ instead of pretend they were sports..Hulk Hogan is still from that last breed of character that, in character, holds firm to the vitamin eating traditions of the Reagan Era. When he was a cereal brand.. when he was a national figure during the late 20th century. His image has been tarnished and his reputation dealt blows.. But his homage to Mean Gene was credible and his words were meaningful.. Yes, indeed.. so many big wrestling stars are in a match in the sky…. Flying high. Superfly..Hogan’s the last of a dying breed..Ten bell salutes in the WWE come early and often. So many wrestling perish of overdoses on drugs or alcohol, or overdoses on fame and fortune coupled with dreadful choices for their bodies and families..It is almost as though the fame of professional wrestling is a curse within itself.. people who are not prone to fame are hit hard by the flashing cameras and even harder by the contracts and jobs that injure without Workers Compensation.Their tortured careers brought us all laughter and cheers.. We clap and continue to root for the baby faces…And miss Mean Gene, Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, and all of the voices and personalities that somehow helped form us during the formative years.. -

For those who say wrestling is not real, ask Liv Morgan
For those who say wrestling is not real, this is one of the reminders that the accidents that can occur on the sports ”entertainment” is very dangerous.. and very real indeed.
WWE star Liv Morgan was knocked out live on TV Monday night after being kicked in the head twice by Brie Bella. The 24-year-old suffered a suspected concussion in the terrifying accident on “Monday Night Raw” in Denver. She was competing with the Riott Squad against the Bella Twins and Natalya when the shocking incident happened.
Morgan was in-ring with Brie when she was “Yes Kicked” twice in the head, sending her crashing to the mat. The ex-NXT ace gallantly kicked out of the move, even though she was clearly injured and needed treatment.

The ring of honor gets a crowd
Wrestling fans read with great interest yesterday an article appearing in DeadSpin about Ring of Honor Wresting. Dave Meltzer didn’t think that the company would ever get an event with more than 10,000 people.
That changes now.. September 1, the Sears Centre in Chicago will have more than 10,000 fans for a pay per view event.Ring of Honor wrestling now is the first professional wrestling organization besides the WWE to draw this many people since the WCW in 1999–almost twenty years of Vince McMahan total dominance!Ring of Honor Wrestling boasts Cody Rhodes, the Young Bucks, and Rey Mysterio as its biggest draws. In March 2017, there were rampant rumors that McMahan was interested in absorbing ROH into the WWE with a takeover. To date no further events have transpired to make that appear to be in the works. Of course with the latest bit of info on popularity the WWE may re-evaluate their next course of action.Meanwhile McMahan has seemingly been more interested in other sports like the creation (again) of a football league. His wife is busy working for the Trump Administration…And all of this makes me completely and totally miss those magical Monday nights of the late 90s when WWE had opposition on TNT with WCW. Flipping back and forth ferociously to see what insults each company was hurling at the other, what stars would end of making appearances… It was a great time to be a fan. Now… Sinclair owns ROH. Not a company that even or a sultry summer Monday would find me wanting to give ratings. -

Legend Bruno Sammartino dead at 82
Sammartino was the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation’s longest-reigning world champion, holding the title for nearly eight consecutive years. He began his record title reign after beating Buddy Rogers at Madison Square Garden on May 17, 1963.
He would not relinquish the belt until a loss to Ivan Koloff on Jan. 18, 1971.
After regaining the title in December 1973, Sammartino went on to have a run of more than years; that’s also one of the five-longest world title reigns in the company’s history.

The new Andre the Giant documentary is criticized for being more one of the WWE
Andre The Giant was literally larger than life in appearance but also in pop culture. He helped define 1980s profeessional wrestling.. That is why lots of fans were excited to hear that the WWE and HBO teamed up to do a documentary on his life.
https://uproxx.com/prowrestling/andre-the-giant-documentary-hbo-review/ ….BUT A REVIEW BEING WRITTEN MAY NOT LEAD MANY TO LOOK FORWARD TO THE TREATMENT. Brandon Stroud laments that the documentary ends up being a story of the WWE Giant as opposed to the human being Andre..The money quote:Ric Flair shows up for the first time about 26 minutes in just to make a dick joke. At times, it’s exactly right. It’s maybe never as right as when Vince and Hulk spend about two solid minutes doing impersonations of Andre’s farts. At the same time, the “winner writes the history” version of WWE storytelling is heavy. Heavy. You’ve got Vince McMahon explaining how he took over the territory system by announcing that his product was “vastly better,” with no argument or even a conversation. It was just accepted as fact. Hulk Hogan’s the guy they go to when it’s time to talk about how Andre hated Macho Man Randy Savage, because of course he is, and at one point the documentary straight-up almost becomes a Hogan doc. They push Andre aside to explain Hulk Hogan, which takes time, but in fairness is somewhat necessary for the non-wrestling fan viewer to grasp the big WrestleMania III part. Hogan is there to talk about himself, wearing a Hogan’s Beach T-shirt. WrestleMania and how great WrestleMania is dominates the second half of the film. Mean Gene Okerlund is there to explain how he’d never seen anything as great as WrestleMania!
