  • ROGUE AIR FORCE ONE

    ROGUE AIR FORCE ONE

Life imitating reality.. reality imitating life.

Either way, some times things just happen that make you think a cosmic player is having fun.. that God is setting up coincidences to make us just laugh . Or Cry.

When Donald Trump announced his military strike on Syria the other night, he was on Air Force One. It was interesting that he spoke to the press while a television screen on the plane was playing ROGUE ONE, the STAR WARS story..

The movie continued to play while Trump fielded questions.  The internet, quick to make memes, really did not have to, this time.

  • Stranger Things: Centralia the lost town, an interview with director Joe Sapienza

Stranger Things: Centralia the lost town, an interview with director Joe Sapienza

Before beginning, a few tidbits of information need revealing. I was born and raised in Centralia. At least for a time, until my family was forced out along with many others in the 1980s.
The time was strange.. as a child, it felt surreal. Upended.. odd…last minute rites to a town that was. And as time went on, wounds healed.. mine fires quelled.. And people were left with dusting off the old coal region relics of history to figure out just exactly what happened…

I recently interviewed Joe Sapienza, the director of a film making waves amongst smaller venues called CENTRALIA: PENNSYLVANIA’S LOST TOWN.   I had the chance to see it in Tamaqua, PA, last fall during a private screening. Since that time, it has been changed a bit, and a finished product, exceeds most people’s desires. The movie is amazing–take it from me, a former resident. It uses information from residents, historical facts and artifacts and news clips from the likes of WNEP and others in the Northeastern Pennsylvania marketplace. It memorializes what was.. what will never be again.

And for Sapienza, it wasn’t much of a problem for him to acquaint himself with the storyline of Centraila.  Joe Sapienza is a freelance producer and videographer who dropped out of high school and, after getting a GED and working in a job he hated at the post office, went back to school… He finished in 2010 with a thesis for Drexel University surrounding the events of Centralia..

Sapienza told me that he learned about Centralia in 2005, that he was intrigued, and then began to delve into David DeKok’s FIRE UNDERGROUND book.   “I pitched the Centralia premise in class and got approved in September 2013,” he told the HORROR REPORT. “We began filming for the short senior project titled America’s Lost Town in January 2014 to April 2014. We overshot everything because I figured I might extend it after graduation.”  The team that helped connect dots and create a documentary all developed into people successful in their career adventures.. For example, Allyson Kircher, the producer,  now works for Netflix as a production coordinator.

Sapienza continued, “I did just that and I hired another producer with whom I was friends with and graduated with, Allyson Kircher, and then extended more shooting dates from July 2014 to September 2016. During that period, we shot more b-roll and more interviews and acquired rights to news footage, more photos, and music rights. This is my third feature documentary and is one of my favorites so far,” he explained.  “We worked on this documentary extensively and a lot of labor went into it to perfect it, all with my own funding, crew, cameras and lighting with a total cost of $16,000.00; over three years including post production and marketing, which is extremely low budget. Had I not had my own gear and many good friends in the business to help, this would’ve never happened and the short would’ve been it.”

It was hard work that paid off. Most people who have seen this documentary have been amazed with its accuracy of events and zeal to promote what really happened in the little town that was.  The story of Centralia is fabled, with it’s past comes riddles of strangeness like plane crashes and stories of a peaceful hamlet in the 80s era of Reagan and MTV. The perfect storm of the 1980s struck, with it came a mine fire’s wrath and populace forced to relocate …

Sapienza was interested in Centralia for the same reason so many others are: The fact that an underground mine fire is raging.  To contemplate a danger that does not show a face is interesting.. Where there is smoke, there is fire. You just can’t see it. Sapienza told the HORROR REPORT,  “I went on Dave DeKok’s site and found his photo collection and became obsessed with all of the photos, and I read the Renee Jacob’s book because the photos really put things in perspective for me. I saw the town when it was intact and saw the people who were affected by this mess, and in my head visually I saw a real sad desperate story that needed to be told through the lens of a camera. I’m a child of the 80’s so when I saw photos of the kids and some photos of the elderly people from the town during that era, in a weird way, it reminded me of my childhood and my grandparents growing up in Philadelphia during that decade of 1980. So, in some weird unexplainable way, I was relating and connecting to these people through the photos, so I became really obsessed with the story more and more…like a sickness really, but in a good way!”

A little caveat to the comment, and for full disclosure it’s worth telling: I  appeared on page 13 of the Renee Jacobs book.  And quite frankly, for some strange reason, still recall the exact day in my life when the picture was taken..

Sapienza did have some trouble as he first started his voyage into the the Centralia world. People did not talk to him. Doors closed. Phones hung up. Until he met Tom Dempsey, perhaps one of the greatest local historians and experts in not only Centralia but all that is the eastern and Central Pennsylvania region. Dempsey, Sapienza said, and DeKok, gave him the information he needed to begin his tale of mine fire. Sapienza was able to tie some people together within his own circle of connections and eventually met up with people from the Coddington family–a famed family in the town for numerous reasons.  “John Coddington’s granddaughter at Drexel University just a couple years below me?!” he said, “I still can’t believe it, it was like this was meant to be because we had nobody, I had no residents or former residents that would talk to me, all but one person until the Coddington’s came along.”

“I wanted to set the entire timeline out in the documentary and tell the audience exactly what happened and why it happened through the stories of the residents, former residents, news clips, photos, news articles, and the government officials and lawyers that were all involved in the Centralia story, told from the heart and not from the “Silent Hill” perspective, “Sapienza said. “At that point, only two firms turned us down for interviews, Blaschak Coal Company and the law firm of Rosenn Jenkins & Greenwald who represented the Commonwealth in the lawsuit that was initiated by the remaining residents. So, to answer the question, I think many residents past and present know the story of Centralia in their minds and like to embrace it in their own way, and I think it has a very enriched history and many little back stories. I think people will learn its history and see that the mine fire was not the only culprit in the story. We told exactly what happened and what the future holds for Centralia, right to the point, and hopefully everyone will embrace it.”

He also became immersed in the area where the filming was taking place. “My crew and I would frequently go to May’s because it was just convenient and right down the street from Centralia,” Sapienza told the HORROR REPORT. “But we went to the Mineshaft Café and Fabrizio’s a few times for lunch and dinner that the cast and crew enjoyed. We also made it a point to stop at Dairy Queen on the way back to Philadelphia through Pottsville, it was a ritual. We took a photo of everyone under the first crew in the parking lot after we wrapped in April 2014 for the short version.”

I asked Sapienza about Graffiti Highway. I asked him about why, in his thoughts, people traveled for miles to states away to see such a place.. He is as perplexed as me, quite frankly. Sapienza commented, “I don’t get it but when we interviewed tourists on that highway we got the same answer again and again, that they wanted to see what all the buzz was about, look at the huge crack in the road, and look at drawings of penises.”

Centralia, and Graffiti Highway, has been in the news as of late. State Police are cracking down on people spray painting the road. Along with it, warnings that tickets and fines, arrests and all the like could occur.. A now infamous ‘Barbie Car race’ set for May was what seemingly set of cops to put more of a focus on the town that was.  Sapienza told the HORROR REPORT,  “I did read about the Barbie Car race but the trespassing issues have been going on for years and the state police began enforcing it a couple months prior. What bothers me is that the graffiti is now out of control and is now within the borough, on trees, signs, and other roadways that run through Centralia. I think the state police should crack down on the graffiti that’s now developing within the borough, and I’m sure they’re doing that now.”

Not only did Joe Sapienza make a film about the town, but he was so moved to the situation that he also helped try cleaning it. Sapienza started cleanup efforts with EPCAMR director Robert Hughes in an attempt to rid the town of trash. Sapienza commented, “Robert Hughes really pulled through on that and he got us the dumpsters and volunteers that we needed and Tom Hynoski- volunteer fire chief let us use the Centralia borough hall to stage the event.”  For the future? The cleaning may depend on the state’s capitol. Sapienza said, “It will take some time, but it all depends on the people in Harrisburg for help in funding EPCAMR’s projects.”

It was really depressing to see because I knew that at one time these areas were people’s back yards and homes and there’s paint buckets, swimming pools, couches, floor tiles, broken glass, diapers, needles, pill bottles, all kinds of shit all over the place. So, that sparked the idea of a clean-up event. .”

For fans of the HORROR REPORT who have followed me since 2001, you probably know my history and affinity to Centralia.. for others, you may only know about the ‘SILENT HILL’ film, which supposedly is based VERY LOOSELY on the events of the town. More than a few tourists I encountered over the years believed they were going to not only see fire from the ground, but also paranormal entities and ghosts.  They come to find out… it’s just a vacant town. Nothing left to see. If there were ghosts, even they left.

There is even a story about a curse in Centralia. That an old priest condemned the town to die a horrible death because of a famed Irish workers rights group called the Molly Maguires. Sapienza said, “Our main goal was we wanted to debunk the Centralia curse, and we did. We proved that it was an urban legend that is totally inaccurate. Tom Dempsey explained it very clearly and debunks it on video. The curse segment is about 5 minutes long and was cut from the final cut that will be shown in theaters along with the 5 minute clean-up segment because we needed to cut things down. These deleted segments will be restored on DVD as extras.”

While paranormal entities are supposedly recorded in cemeteries around the said, Sapienza said he hears nothing but “ambience.”

Being the HORROR REPORT, I cannot leave this entire story go without some equation to modern pop culture horror or sci-fi. For much of my life, I thought of Centralia as the town from THE GOONIES. Rabble rousing friends and authority-questioning people attempting to save their town.. But after seeing last year’s STRANGER THINGS on Netflix, I think of it more like that.. Like the government, not fully equipped to handling a situation… like the friends, going missing because of other-worldy events taking them… like the adults, blind too often to what ails them…

Yes, Centralia is a stranger thing. A tiny town that was wiped off the map because of a fire, but also incompetence among leaders.. And fate. And just pure old bad luck. Joe Sapienza and his team proved that in CENTRALIA: PENNSYLVANIA’S LOST TOWN.

….no but seriously how did a baseball stick to Yadier Molina’s stomach anyway?

Baseball has lots of strange customs and habits.. players are paranoid about curses and spirits. And 7th innings are when weird things happen..
But a baseball sticking to a player’s stomach while the rest of the players search not knowing ?! Hats off to the bizarre in baseball because this one strange thing..

Really… give me some theories here … something to make sense of this .. it’s really bizarre ..

  • The power to do nothing

    The power to do nothing

Throughout the course of the day, you most likely found yourself embroiled with some discussion about the events over the past 24 hours.. President Donald Trump, lampooned by the media since his inauguration, he suddenly been transformed into a war hero for launching 59 missiles at an Assad target in Syria. The event came after days of media attention to a purported chemical attack on a village in that nation. We were told by the collective media that Bashir Assad launched a sarin gas attack on his people. Russia said the opposite, that military flights bombed a munitions factory, allowing the escape of chemical weapons.

Regardless of cause, the rush into a strike back began. Bannon, out at the National Security Council, had no more say.. Jared Kushner behind the scenes, texting to Morning Joe while Ivanca did media tours, began to take charge.. Mad Dog’s plan of attack greenlighted.. Trump struck by surprise.. While the Chinese Prime Minister was tucked into his bed at Mar-a-Lago,  the United States military was ordered to launch the cruise missiles for an air base reportedly used by Bashir’s army to load chemical weapons onto planes.

We were told throughout the day that intelligence agencies–all of them–converged on the fact that Assad was the culprit. Despite the misgivings so many Democrats had about intelligence agencies in the 2000s proclaiming they knew were WMD in Iraq were, there was no time, this time, to debate. Trump acted ‘decisively’ the media says. Suddenly, MSNBC’s correspondents stopped calling him Mr. Trump and started saying ‘The President.”  He was the Commander in Chief, upset by seeing children die a horrid death on TV and given credit, finally, as being the leader of America.

    Positive coverage abounds..
A small chorus of just about none, along with Rand Paul, said that maybe Congress needs to be consulted. John McCain was cool with it. So was his friend Lindsay.
The media poo-poohs that nation. Flags waved today. Footage from the Pentagon of missiles  launching were all the rage.
    America is back.

    But the repercussions? So many.
For Trump, it was immediate! Many supporters online decided that this was not what they voted for, that his promises to NOT intervene in Syria were violated.. that he flipped on a major issue. Intervention!? That’s not what rural red states bought in to! They wanted less war! More jobs! The jobs numbers came out today. They were not stellar.

Russia is enraged, maybe. Some proclaim back room conspiracies.. dark smoke filled offices of ambassadors behind the scenes playing the chess game out.. But others, including the media, seem celebratory that Trump–the Russian agent days ago–is rejecting any friendship with Pootie Poot.

China.. They like Syria.. Chinese power players are meeting with Trump as he launches missiles.. A power play taking place.

North Korea.. News tonight that they may be on the target list next for the newfound Commander in Chief. NBC NEWS is reporting tonight that the  National Security Council has presented President Trump with options to respond to North Korea’s nuclear program — including putting American nukes in South Korea or killing dictator Kim Jong-un, multiple top-ranking intelligence and military officials told NBC News…

    And on the world.

I have written too many times to count on my hands about how I loathe war.. loathe the awful things humans can do to each other.. despise violence and hatred, and ponder how in the 21st century we still so often act as unchained animals in the wild. We ruin safe spaces. We harm innocent lives. We kill the living. And we destroy beautiful places, all to gain territory and solidify power.

We are powerless to that. We are not able to stop the freight train of history .. even if we tried.

So often I think about the one lone protester in Tiannamen Square in China last century. He stood against oppressive evil.  And he lost.

Because these big battles, the ones involving large scale country-chess games, just happen. Power brokers behind closed doors set the agenda.. the mission. In the chess games, the pawns so often don’t know what the back row is doing.

In life, we just exist. For the most part, we try living our lives.. we try protecting our children.. we attempt to have normal relationships .. and we close one eye while watching the news.

I will close two every now and then.

I wrote about Mr. Leeds before. If you have the time, please go and read those articles. While they are showing their age due to the dates they were written, the words ring true now.. Like this:

Despite it being one of the lowest rated movies of M. Night Shyamalan’s career, I loved LADY IN THE WATER. There is one character in particular who reminds me of so many people in our current time.. His name was “Mr. Leeds” played by actor Bill Irwin.  He is one of the tenants in the apartment building where a magical fairy tale will soon ensue.. but until it does, he is busy daily watching his television set of the latest scenes of chaos, strife, warfare and murder across the planet. Shyamalan presents him as a stoic man, someone who seemingly watches in a silent agony as the chilling news broadcasts play out 24/7 in his living room. And really, isn’t that all of us? The silent majority, not condemning the atrocities across the earth but instead attempting to live our lives as though they aren’t happening? Traveling to work in heavy traffic, consumed by radio interfering with our souls, standing around a water cooler with mindless dribble spewing? That is us.. We are good at heart.. But scared of the consequences of speaking out

  • Trumpland: missiles launched !!

    Trumpland: missiles launched !!

Only days after a chemical attack killed children in Syria, President Donald Trump deepened the United States role in the nation…

Trump launched the missiles while meeting with China’s prime minster in Florida ..

    More..

The United States launched dozens of cruise missiles Thursday night at a Syrian airfield in response to what it believes was the Syrian government’s use of banned chemical weapons blamed for having killed at least 100 people on Tuesday, U.S. military officials told NBC News.

Two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired at least 50 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target — Ash Sha’irat in Homs province in western Syria, the officials said. That’s the airfield from which the United States believes the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fired the banned weapons.

  • The odd case of Bruno Borges

The odd case of Bruno Borges

Thanks to Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis, we now have some big attention being paid to this story.. I received a link a day ago and neglected to even pass it through to my own readers.. when I saw the Facebook post from Clyde Lewis and accompanying video, I paid attention..

    And the video here:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0dWJLzPRnw]

There are some fanciful (maybe??) rumors that he was abducted by aliens! And even some more on message boards that if you watch the video contained in my post you will suffer strange damage to your ears ..really. As a precaution, I watched with the sound off. Not joking on that point..

One rumor states that Bruno became the statue in the video.

While I must stop myself from complete belief of this, it is awfully strange. Also I have been reading Brazilian news articles about it translated into English.. Borges seemingly is the son of a wealthy restaurant and businessman in Brazil. I would imagine that is where he was able to get the money for the items in the video..

But a cautionary note: The video on YouTue is categorized under ‘gaming.’ Some believe this is an incredibly amazing hoax to promote an upcoming game… a mystery egg online…

    The jury is out.

For now, it’s an Alchemist gone missing… and conspiracy theories abound.

  • ROGUE ONE sequel coming..

    ROGUE ONE sequel coming..

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away… money was to be made by Disney from spin offs of the famed Lucasfilm enterprise..

The latest battle sequence being planned: A sequel to ROGUE ONE, the prequel to NEW HOPE, which was a sequel to the first three films that were made more than a decade after the originals..
Explain that to someone without stopping..

…now without spilling the beans much for the slight chance you still did not see the ending sequence of ROGUE ONE (or the beginning sequence of NEW HOPE) … I am somewhat shocked to think that anyone would still be alive after the disastrous ending to the ROGUE ONE team.. but Apparently, a couple of the new faces survived the Rebels’ attack, and they’re going to come back for another spinoff film..

Meanwhile… Luke Skywalker is going to simultaneously come back.. as is Obi Wan.. and lots of others.

I fear that this is a bit of Empire overload.. too much of a great thing makes it a watered down version of meaningless notmuch-ism..

There was a press release put out Friday from Disney:

The Rebellion continues! StarWars.com is pleased to announce that development has begun on a Rogue One sequel. The Star Wars story team isn’t ready to share exactly what they have in store or when the Rogue One sequel will arrive in theaters but fans attending Star Wars Celebration 2017 might keep their eyes peeled for an early tease!

But… we can confirm that Felicity Jones and Dieg  Luna will reprise their roles as Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor!

The untitled Rogue One sequel joins an exciting slate of new adventures in the Galaxy Far, Far Away coming to fans in the coming years. We can’t wait to share more info with you.

StarWars.com. All Star Wars, all the time.
And in box offices? All Star Wars all of the time.

ROGUE ONE was actually my favorite STAR WARS story of all ..I loved the way it could be paired with the original NEW HOPE chapter.. I love how Darth Vader makes himself known, and seeing him in it was like seeing him for the first time ever.
    …..but overloading is coming..
The rebel alliance is going to have a tough time keeping up with the mountain pressure of voluminous scripts.
Fingers crossed that Disney won’t ruin this..

5 Ways the World as We Know it could End

We all think that we live in a world that’s safe, but the reality is, a total disaster only needs to happen once. Just because we’ve been safe until now, that doesn’t mean things couldn’t change…

In what follows I’m going to give you 5 ways in which the way as we know it would end and, although 4 of the 5 scenarios are unlikely, the 5th one is actually one I worry about.

    #1. An Asteroid Hitting Earth

We all know that it doesn’t take a large asteroid to completely destroy the planet. The effects would be devastating even if you lived on the opposite side of the Earth from the point of impact.

I’m sure the smaller ones would be destroyed by NASA and other space agencies before they reached us, but the ones that most likely wouldn’t are the large ones. We just don’t have the right technology to do it so, should one be on a collision course with Earth, we’re as good as dead.

Still, fear not, because the odds of this happening are extremely small. While there’s a huuuge number of asteroids floating around in space, space itself is extremely big. We would also get time to at least try to deviate its course.

    #2. WW3

The prospect of a 3rd global war was there ever since the 2nd one was over. Despite our advancements, it seems there will always be leaders in certain countries willing to go to war. Countries such as North Korea, Russia and Saudi Arabia have leaders that don’t seem to fully share our values, and to want world peace, unless it’s on their terms.

If you live in the US or Australia, you’re safer than most citizens of this planet. If you’re Swiss, you’re probably safe too, due to the country’s neutrality. Switzerland had no military involvement in neither WW1 nor WW2.

Still, no place on earth is safe from war, and we have to agree that Russia is the strongest military power capable of starting it. Vladimir’s Putin obvious moves to gain back lost territories such as the Crimea Peninsula are proof that he’s willing to go to great lengths to what appears to be a restoration of the old USSR.

Let’s also consider the possibility that the wars and conflicts in the Middle East can also spark a world war, primarily because both the US and Russia are fighting for control in the region. You never know which “insignificant” even can be the trigger. Let’s also not forget about Turkey, another strong military power that would definitely help things escalate faster if war broke out in this region.

#3. A Solar Storm Could Wreak Havoc

A solar storm is simply a very strong activity inside the sun, which culminates with a CME (coronal mass ejection), which, if we’re unlucky, would head straight towards Earth.

This may shock you but there’s a 12% chance it could happen by 2020 (and I’m sure the odds will continue to exist after that). We were actually very close in 2012, but we apparently missed it. They say we get a 12 hours’ notice, but we wouldn’t be able to do much, except avoiding planes, cars and any other means of transportation that involves an electrical component.

Although your body won’t feel the EMP, many are convinced that all electronics will be fried, and that there’s nothing we can do to repair them. We’d have to rebuild them from scratch, though I’m not sure the countries on the side of the Earth that will be affected will be able to do that on their own. In any case, it would be a long process.

Another side effect of this would be a halt in transportation, which means food trucks will stop coming, leading to riots, starving mobs and so on.

#4. The Sea Level Could Rise by 200 Feet

This is one of the worst-case scenarios of climate change. Cities such as New York, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Shanghai will be completely submerged under water.  Of course, this would happen over the course of hundreds upon hundreds of years, but the problem is that it’s irreversible.

    #5. An Economic Collapse

We’ve seen what happened in 2008. The financial crisis not only came without warning but it also seriously affected the entire planet, completely destroying countries such as Greece.

Now, what would happen if a similar collapse 2 – 3 times bigger would occur? Given the global political turmoil, the war in Syria, Brexit and the fact that we’re more divided than ever, it would be A LOT worse. Dozens of millions would starve and the most fortunate will be the ones that have a garden and a few animals that would provide a steady food supply.

As you may or may not know, no country can produce everything on its own. As you may or may not know, a halt in transportation system (food trucks, ships etc.) would mean people will begin to starve within days. So out of all the disaster scenarios in this article, a global economic collapse is by far the one with the biggest chances of happening.

April fools! A comet will NOT hit earth

….first of all, let me say this: April fools day is the most wretched day of the year. In the old days (pre 2016) ‘fake news’ was abundant on April fools day. Now fake news is just out there every day.

Anyway, be sure of this: Tomorrow you will hear someone famous died, a war started somewhere, and aliens landed. All of it will be very unfunny lame jokes on you. April Fool’s day. Awful.. just awful.

But what IS true is this: A comet will not hit earth..

A comet named 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák is set to make its closest flyby to Earth since it was originally discovered in 1858.

A few days before Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák reaches perihelion, the comet will be very near its closest point to Earth for a 6-day period between March 29 and April 3, according to Space.com.

The absolute closest it will come to the Earth will be smack in the middle of that date range — on April Fools’ Day — when it will zoom by approximately 13.2 million miles away. Pending atmospheric conditions, viewers in the Northern Hemisphere should be able to see it on Saturday night around 9 PM EST near the handle of the Big Dipper — however, since the comet is less than a mile in diameter, you’ll need either high-quality binoculars or a telescope to check it out.

There may be an article or two tomorrow that the comet will strike. But it won’t.

HOWEVER.. that said.. so often we are hit with stories of night skies lighting up from asteroids or comets that have gone undetected.. from meteors and space rocks flying through the atmosphere. So it’s not comforting, at least to me, to think that a comet is making a close flyby.

Space is vast and large.. we’re a pale blue dot.
    ….folks, it’s just a matter of time.
April fools or not. One day it won’t be a joke regulated to the final story on late local news after sports and weather..
