Election 2024: America chooses the clown it secretly loves

Now we know America still loves clowns, just not the one portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix .. Art the clown took center stage at the box office this weekend and trounced Joker 2.

And with the news of this small budget box office bonanza, something bigger seems to be happening..  something cultural seems to have shifted.

The Terrifier movie franchise centers on Art the Clown, a silent but sadistic killer who brutally murders his victims in increasingly horrific ways.

The first film, Terrifier follows Art as he torments two women on Halloween night, marking his debut as one of modern horror’s most terrifying villains. Terrifier 2 expanded on the lore, exploring more of Art’s supernatural abilities while maintaining the intense gore that became the series’ hallmark.

Both films are known for their graphic violence, practical effects, and unrelenting brutality, drawing comparisons to classic slasher films while pushing the envelope in terms of shock value.

The franchise was created by writer and director Damien Leone, who is also known for his work in makeup and special effects. Leone first introduced Art the Clown in a short film titled The 9th Circle eay back in 2008 and later included him in the anthology film All Hallows’ Eve in 2013.

As a filmmaker with a deep passion for practical effects, Leone’s work on Terrifier showcases his skills in creating disturbing, realistic gore, which has become a defining feature of the series.

Leone has expressed that he draws inspiration from horror classics like Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street while wanting to push horror into new, more extreme territory.

Terrifier 3 seemingly took the gore aspect to a much higher level. Just search up the rat scene or chainsaw scene. Choose if you wanted to watch it, but at least read about it. Chances are many of you already saw it at the either’s anyway.

Joker 2 dropped 82% at the box office Terrifier 3 for being a movie that costs little to nothing to make. It scored almost $20 million.

    Timing is key.

Perhaps the fact the movie came out October. The weather’s colder and those Halloween decorations are abundant. Or perhaps just maybe something else is going on. It seems to be that there’s a craving out there for gore. Suddenly, it seems that society itself relishes in the macabre. And the dastardly.

It feels a lot like when the Saw movie franchise started back in the early 2000s. Then, society was overrun with torture and war footage on television. Reality was grosser than fiction, so fiction had to try to outdo it, and it tapped into a pop culture moment in which we as a people shifted into the acceptance of gore due to the acceptance of torture and a war stands in response to terrorism.

Art the clown then signifies something.. maybe Terrifier 3 is just a blip on the horror radar, or perhaps this movie coming out right before a really painfully divisive election showcases how painfully divided we all are ..

Art the clown is the instigator .. he’s the killer with no conscience, murdering children at a Christmas decorated mall without mercy. The darkest of crime and inhumanity.

Is it possible that Art the clown, while maybe not signifying how we all feel WE ACT, certainly signifies how society itself feels.. no remorse, no mercy and just relentless over the top violence to the point of absurdity.

    Or maybe not.

Terrifier, 3 again could just be that blip .. the moment when moviegoers just said no to the supernatural scares, and they would rather have a blood-soaked and  vomit laden theater to slip and fall in..

Time will tell, but either way Terrifier 3 has certainly made bloody waves.

  • Joaquin Phoenix being blamed for JOKER 2 failures!

Joaquin Phoenix being blamed for JOKER 2 failures!

    Todd Phillips.. nah..
    The ending scene? No way.

    It is Joaquin Phoenix!!

At least that is what sources behind the scenes are claiming that insiders think.

After all that build up and advertising blitz of Phoenix and Lady Gaga setting to rock our Gotham City world, critics and movie goers alike had similar reactions: Shock and awe at the failure that was JOKER 2.. So many hated the entire film. Others just hated the ended..

(PS, we liked it until the final 5 minutes. All that cross universe nonsense.)

    But who is to blame?

    THE STAR!!

The Hollywood Reporter, their sources claim that Phoenix is being blamed as a big reason for Joker: Folie à Deux’s critical results. The publication reports, “the idea for the sequel came to Phoenix in a dream,” leading to the Academy-Award-winning actor and director Todd Phillips to pitch it to now-former-chairman of Warner Bros., Toby Emmerich. When asked who the targeted audience was for the DC sequel, “one outside source sums it up this way: “For Joaquin.””

Perhaps the real blame lays at the feet of Warner itself. Should this sequel have even been made?

No one seems to be smiling all the way to the bank in the aftermath of this comically bad disaster…

Beetlejuice reigns for second week at box office

If he goes number 1 a third week he appears..

The second weekend of September for all movies came close to the $100M mark for the first time since pre-Covid 2019 thanks to Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice rally at the box office, coming in at $51.6M weekend (-56%) after a second Friday of $14.4M and Saturday of $22.5M.

The running US domestic total is $188M with global at $264.3M.

We finally got the chance to see this movie in a crowded theater.. well worth it. Grab popcorn and sit back to one of the most enjoyable and least pretentious movies in a long time.

Michael Keaton outdid himself. The characters .. the old time graphics.. the fun. Worth a second showing perhaps next week.

  • DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE far surpassing predictions

DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE far surpassing predictions

This is an amazing box office weekend.. We went to see DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE for an afternoon show–it was sold out. As a matter of fact, the theater was playing the movie about 10 times both Saturday and Sunday to sold out shows.
Something has struck a chord .. midsummer night dreams mixed with horror/comedy/Marvel..

    Here are the mid-weekend numbers.

This may be a movie with mid-2000 numbers.. maybe between $195 to $200 mil opening weekend in the United States.. $420 million worldwide.

At $195M-$205M, that will put D&W as either the eighth- or ninth-best opening at the domestic B.O. of all-time, behind Avengers: Endgame ($357.1M), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1M), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6M), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9M), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220M), Jurassic World ($208.8M), The Avengers ($207.4M), and Black Panther ($202M).

The end of July appears to be an amazing time to debut a summer blockbuster movie..

Twisters and turns at the box office: $80 million dollars strong

Forecasts expected $60 mil.. then $71.. and now as final numbers come in oviedo execs and critical are ‘blown away’ by the F5 TWISTERS.

    $80 million strong..

Though some critical were dismayed that the movie displayed no political messaging it seems audiences could care less.

People love their summer disasters. .. escapism . Unless of course the weather is bad..?

People love disaster movies in the summer because they provide thrilling escapism and adrenaline-pumping action that complements the season…

Over the years, films like “Independence Day” (1996), with its iconic scenes of alien destruction, and “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004), showcasing cataclysmic climate change, have captivated audiences. More recent hits like “San Andreas” (2015), which highlighted the chaos of a massive earthquake, and “2012” (2009), depicting the end of the world, have continued this trend, proving that summer moviegoers crave the excitement and larger-than-life stakes that disaster movies offer.

  • FLASH: Longlegs had long legs this weekend at box office

FLASH: Longlegs had long legs this weekend at box office

DESPICABLE ME continues to dominate the box office, but the summer season is getting a taste of autumnal horror with LONGLEGS. Nic Cage did phenomenal.. the movie was undoubtedly an experience for those who see it, and theaters may be the best place to view when considering the aura of the screen and the feel and sound of the movie..

LONGLEGS wins in its own way with a $22 mil domestic opening.

NEON films is celebrating in a press release: “Not since The Blair Witch Project launched 25 years ago on the same weekend in July has there been an independent genre film that out-projected, out-performed and over-indexed so wildly that it seemed to the industry it ‘came out of nowhere.’”

  • FLASH: NO ONE WATCHING ‘THE WATCHERS’

FLASH: NO ONE WATCHING ‘THE WATCHERS’

News from the box office does not bode well for M Night Shyamalan or horror…

While BAD BOYS 4 is making money *very little of course when you compare to box offices of summers past* the WATCHERS is flailing like someone stuck in quicksand..

Warner Bros.’ thriller “The Watchers” earned a meager $2.9 million across Friday and preview screenings.. this continues a pattern of horror features underperforming at the box office this year.

It will struggle to match its projections for a $10 million bow.

Meanwhile the lazy cat keeps plugging away–and almost as good as THE WATCHERS! Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” earned $2.8 million on Fridayjust 27% off from its $3.7 million gross a week ago. The animated feature will purr to $68 million total in North America through Sunday! The feel good sleeper of the summer keeps yawning but yet earning..

Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 million from 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings.. $53 mil is expected for the full weekend..
