TENET LEADS IN A WORLD OF BOX OFFICE PAIN

THE BOX OFFICE IS HURTING! CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S TENET’ STRUGGLES DURING ITS SECOND WEEK.. And the box office is stumbling into the autumn..

Tenet made only $6.7 million during its second Friday-to-Sunday, which calculates to a 66.5 percent drop from weekend to weekend.. the film cost $200 mil to make.

This movie have done huge numbers in any other year, besides a 2020 cursed release.. There has been a particular focus on Tenet‘s release given the fact was set up to be a guinea pig of sorts for the industry to get a grasp on the potential of releasing a big blockbuster movie during the on-going pandemic, and thus far the reaction hasn’t exactly been positive..

These numbers showcase the true world of hurt that movie chains and studios are in right now.. 70% of theaters in America are open right now, but major cities like LA and NYC are keeping theirs closed. And even of the buildings open, there are stringent rules for social distancing with mostly empty theater rooms..

This is also the reason why several films, including WONDER WOMAN 1984 have delayed October releases.. Just a few more weeks.. just a few more hopes. And maybe this will all get better.. Or maybe it won’t.

Developing as we progress through a dire year..

THE ROCK BEATS THE JEDI! INSIDOUS not far behind

STAR WARS Episode VIII is being beaten by Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in first place with a stellar $35.8M third weekend in a row!

The unexpected hit starring Jack Black, the ROCK, and Madison Iseman is creating a stir of various demographics. Most who see it love it.. even those who expected to be lukewarm end up completely diving into the strange and amazing world that JUMANJI has to offer..
INSIDIOUS THE LAST KEY is holding its own, as well! Bolstered by the continuous creep down of STAR WARS, the horror flick has enough cash to finish second place this weekend..
INTERNAL INDUSTRY ESTIMATES for this weekend now revealed:
    1. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle  (SONY), 3,801 theaters (+36) / $10.7M Fri (-39%)/3-day: $35.8M (-28%)/Total:$244.1M/ Wk 3
    2. Insidious: The Last Key (UNI), 3,116 theaters (0)/ $12.7M  Fri/3-day: $25.9M/ Wk 1
    3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi(DIS), 4,232 theaters (0)/ $6.7M  Fri (-65%)/3-day: $23.6M  (-55%)/Total:$572.5M/ Wk 4
    4. The Greatest Showman  (FOX), 3,342 theaters (+26) / $4.1M Fri (-22%) / 3-day: $14.1M (-9%)/Total: $77.2M/Wk 3
    5. Pitch Perfect 3  (UNI), 3,458 theaters (-10)/ $3.3M  Fri (-50%)/3-day: $10.5M (-37%)/Total: $86.2M/ Wk 3

Roger Friedman is noting the amount of a drop LAST JEDI has had — along with that a joke that Blumhouse must be feeding their actors now.. that joke because normally horror flicks from the company are budgeted at $5 mil.. INSIDIOUS was $10..

mother! just scored Jennifer Lawrence the worst box office opening of her career..

    The reviews were awful.
    The critics panned..
The citizens revolted and were revulsed.

Babies were not harmed in the filming, but everyone’s eyes who watched an infant be eaten were..

This movie may have been the worst scored movie in years… An “F” with CinemaScore.. some of the worst and most sarcastic reviews and comments on ROTTEN TOMATOES..

Today Jennifer Lawrence is suffering the worst wide box office opening of her career..

    FROM THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER:

Darren Aronofsky’s mother! stalled in its domestic box office debut, earning an estimated $7.5 million from 2,368 theaters after receiving a rare F CinemaScore and facing competition from blockbuster It.
mother!, an elevated psychological horror-thriller, supplants The House at the End of the Street($12.3 million) to mark the lowest nationwide launch of Jennifer Lawrence’s career. The Paramount title, costing $30 million to produce, came in No. 3 for the weekend behind It and new offering American Assassin. (In a sign that summer is over, all three titles are rated R.)
Warner Bros. and New Line’s It continued to make history in its second weekend, declining a scant 51 percent to $60 million from 4,103 theaters, the biggest sophomore outing ever for a horror title.

Confused and angered by mother! while ‘IT’ breaks new records

We talked about MOTHER! earlier today..

But now we know: The movie is a FLOP..

Mother is ‘dying’ in box offices with a “F” cinemaScore and only $7.8 mil .. it has been been a tremendous failure to Jennifer Lawrence.. And increasingly lampooned online as being a holier than thou-premised film with a scene where a baby literally gets eaten..

A few reviews from ROTTEN TOMATOES from the non-paid reviewers.. those I trust more.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!!! WTH is this trash? I have never seen such a bad movie. Do not tell me this is “art”. This movie demonstrates all that is wrong with movies today. Hey, lets kill babies….seriously? Oh just symbiotically art….BLAH BLAH BLAH.

After seeing this you will fill in the title “Mother!” With and additional expletive. WARNING DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I am your average move goer so trust me. who likes a good scare, a good laugh, great story and action. The fact is this movie, has no story, and after an hour you will be screaming “Mother..F***** ” what a waste of time and money…probably the worst movie released with such hype in 10 years!

Got up early in order to see this today, and now I want to go back in time and get the extra sleep. The trailer was purposefully ambiguous because the average viewer won’t glean anything from it, and maybe that was the intent: to draw in an audience to find out what is going on. I had no idea what was going on, and found myself getting angrier and angrier as my questions were never answered. The conclusion/reveal didn’t do anything for me, and made no sense to me as a whole.

    DEADLINE is writing,

Last weekend, Paramount had a custom in-theater trailer for Mother! on It telling moviegoers. “In one week, in this theater, one movie will mess you up for life…You will never forget where you were the first time you saw Mother! After the movie, visit the box office to get your tickets.” One rival marketing head told Deadline, “If I was a horror fan and then went to see Mother! I’d be pretty pissed because it’s not your run of the mill Screen Gems film.” What could Paramount do? How else could they sell this movie? Mother! begins as a quiet movie and then gets really gonzo toward the end and goes off the rails. Lawrence and Aronofsky say it’s all allegory. There is a gripping, ‘WTF is going on now?’ sensibility to the film, and in that sense, the quick clip, suspenseful marketing arguably didn’t betray.

MEANWHILE: ‘IT’ appears to be the big winner again this weekend.. and even talk about the movie on social media has increased over 30% since last week…  This weekend IT will now become the biggest September release ever when it reaches $218 million cumulative..

    And mother!? … ugh.

  • FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON TAKES NOTHING

FRIDAY THE 13TH: JASON TAKES NOTHING

Once again, hopes for a new FRIDAY THE 13TH film went down the tank as it was revealed that Paramount pulled previews and the film from their 2017 release schedule.

Which makes perfect sense. The film doesn’t have a director, a script, or a cast.. It just this nameless *but not faceless* film that continues being bantered around with fanfare but no fruition.

Interesting note, WORLD WAR Z’s sequel has also been pulled..

FRIDAY THE 13TH was set to begin shooting in less than 6 weeks.. I suppose there are groundhogs in Paramount that saw Jason’s shadow..

There are SOME reports that Paramount reconsidered a reboot of the 80s slasher flick after their disastrous film RINGS did so poorly at this past weekend’s box office.

I have written about RINGS before, and how the concept seemed to just be clumsy.. Not only are the days of VHS appreciation long gone, but the entire RING concept was overdone and then over-parodied by the SCARY MOVIE series. Nothing was left behind to remain scary.. Besides the atrocious box office numbers showcasing that peo
    ple just weren’t interested.

And sorry to say FRIDAY fans, but for the most part the days of Jason Vorhees being a hit power player in the horror world are ending. Even this year’s big announcement that Robert Englund is ‘returning as Freddy’ neglects to mention it’s a documentary of NIGHTMARE and potentially the swan song of the character. The FREDDY reboot certainly failed a few years back, too.. as did the FREDDY VS JASON flicks 13 years ago.. *13 years, people* ..

This may be a hint of things to come for the HALLOWEEN remake too.. Time will tell . The only savings grace that movie has is the involvement of John Carpenter..

  • 2016 RECORD: BIGGEST BOX OFFICE PREVIEW NIGHT OF THE YEAR FOR THE BOX OFFICE RETURN OF DARTH VADER

2016 RECORD: BIGGEST BOX OFFICE PREVIEW NIGHT OF THE YEAR FOR THE BOX OFFICE RETURN OF DARTH VADER

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story scored roughly $29 million in its pre-opening Thursday night showings, marking the biggest preview night box office of 2016!

More! Disney CEO Bob Iger doesn’t expect Rogue One to match The Force Awakens‘ record box-office run, but the new movie is forecasted to make as much as $150 million overall in its domestic opening. A global opening of up to $300 million in worldwide ticket sales could also be attainable for Rogue One

  • LIGHTS OUT review wrap

    LIGHTS OUT review wrap

LIGHTS OUT is out .. the long awaited movie based off the short film that became a hit online a few years ago about a monster in a hallway. It is a James Wan production..

A few reviews worth noting on a notable horror 2016 summer film..

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY gives a B-  but also laments: “Suffice it to say that the mental health aspect of the story is not treated with respect, but rather as a simple plot device, to be used and discarded like so many shattered lightbulbs. In a culture that already doesn’t do well by victims of mental illness, it’s disappointing, and takes a lot of wind from Lights Out’s sails”

Chicago SUN TIMES (always miss Roger Ebert when I see Roeper) opines:  “Awards committees rarely honor work in this genre, but Maria Bello deserves supporting actress consideration for her work as Sophie, the mother of a grown daughter named Rebecca (Teresa Palmer in a stellar performance) and Rebecca’s 10-year-old stepbrother, Martin (good work by Gabriel Bateman).”  A four star review

LA TIMES approves: Mercifully, this isn’t a movie about moving into the sort of dubious piece of real estate that might as well have a “Beware of Ghost” sign hanging out front. It’s about what happens when our most cherished and familiar spaces no longer feel safe — not just because of the evil that has moved in but also because of the good that has long since vacated the premises.

The film is currently receiving a 82% rating on ROTTEN TOMATOES.. Already before the movie even hits Friday night, there is chatter galore of a potential sequel..

LIGHTS OUT will be featured under the darkened lights of 2818 theaters.

But it also goes against ICE AGE COLLISION COURSE on almost 4000 screens..  As does STAR TREK. A big weekend for movies as the mid summer slumber sets in..

Depending on when In get to the movies and with who, either I will see LIGHTS OUT this weekend or my son will win the battle by default and we will be watching ICE AGE..

  • DAWN OF JUSTICE crash!

    DAWN OF JUSTICE crash!

When the dramatically high Easter Sunday numbers were posted about BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, I had a hunch.. Those numbers were so good.. soo amazing.. and sooo ready to crash and burn the week after. The movie was talked about all week around water coolers and on school buses.. and people were all in agreement: IT sucks.

This may be one where critics and moviegoers actually find some common ground..

I am choosing not to see the film. Friends of mine who did regard it as one of the lesser qualify pieces of art they have ever consumed.. a few kids think it is cool because of explosions and special effects. But the story line.. the Affleck .. the awfulness of it all..

This weekend is crash and burn time!

Already Friday night lights were dimmed for other films, not BAT vs the super one with WONDER WOMAN somehow thrown in for good measure.

A 79% drop Friday night when compared to the previous weekend. The overall weekend will most likely finish $50 mil with a 69% falloff..

Does that mean the movie is going to flop? No .. it still has some bit to go to make up the over $800 million budget it filmed on, however. But it will make it.

One thing is for sure: ZOOTOPIA is coming in second place and still–second place after this many weeks–showcasing itself as a major hit ..

  • THANKSGIVING BOX WRAP: UP COMPARED TO A YEAR AGO

THANKSGIVING BOX WRAP: UP COMPARED TO A YEAR AGO

HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY continued to dominate the Thanksgiving box office this weekend followed by family friend THE GOOD DINOSAURS.. the MARTIAN stayed strong..

    MORE..

$62 mil for MOCKINGJAY and Pixar’s DINOSAUR had a 79% makeup of families during the weekend to $28 mil in America and $82 mil globally..

The big story of the weekend is not the individual amounts of each movie, but the overall theme: The box office was 12% up compared to the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend..

Store shopping was down. Perhaps black Friday bargains don’t need attention when Cyber Monday is around the corner. The same people shopping years previous are picking time with family in theaters.. Which is an amazingly great concept to me.

There have been some years previous when Thanksgiving and Christmas days ended at the movies. That may be an up and coming tradition so as long as major production companies continue to give quality reasons to make it happen.
