THE PARABLE. Stephen King’s ‘It’: Pennywise vs. ‘The Losers’ Is a Parable for a Tormented Nation

THE PARABLE. Stephen King’s ‘It’: Pennywise vs. ‘The Losers’ Is a Parable for a Tormented Nation:

The movie is a surprise blockbuster at $123 million. Here’s one reason why.

“Everyone needs reassurance that it’s good to be part of a group, and it’s great to come together against division and fear,” Andy Muschietti told EW on Monday morning. “Fear is used as a tool these days to divide and control and conquer. And hate is a tool. And that’s something Pennywise does, so that’s something resonating in our society right now.”

One things that contributes to the frustration are those under the sway of the monster, who refuse to see the reality of what’s happening — much like the adults in It, all of them grotesques whose darkest sides are activated by the monster lurking below.

King himself hit this comparison right on the red nose, joking in a speech at the Women’s March in Sarasota, Fla., last January: “We just elected Pennywise as president.”

That is an observation I can believe in.. I just wrote about PENNYWISE’S HURRICANE WEEKEND at box offices … how we are ALL members of the losers club.. and how we are actually potentially united more if we unite against fear, whether it is a clown or a natural disaster. Nice to see that Muschietti agrees..

IT director Andy Muschietti says IT2 will finish filming in 2018

Here’s what he had to say in a recent interview with Variety. “We are doing [two films],” said Muschietti. “We’ll probably have a script for the second part in January. Ideally, we would start prep in March. Part one is only about the kids. Part two is about these characters 30 years later as adults, with flashbacks to 1989 when they were kids.” Muschietti also commented on what fan’s expectations are for the new film, and what they want to see. “Most of the people are excited about seeing a good adaptation. There are naysayers. Those tend to be the people who are fans of the miniseries rather than the fans of the book. People who read the book and got the book, they’re not crazy about the miniseries. It was a very watered-down version. It didn’t contain the darkness that the book had. They couldn’t make something for TV about a clown who eats children,” Muschietti added.

  • Jordan Peele plans to direct a whole series of horror movies about ‘social demons’

Jordan Peele plans to direct a whole series of horror movies about ‘social demons’

Jordan Peele plans to direct a whole series of horror movies about ‘social demons’:

Peele is giving us the social commentary horror film GET OUT. If you did not hear about it yet, you will. In “Get Out,” a young black man (Daniel Kaluuya) finds himself in a very messed up situation —actually a massive understatement — when he goes out to the country to visit his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) family. We won’t give anything else away, but if you’ve seen the trailer, you can get a hint of how Peele created a unique chiller that explores real ideas and attitudes about race, some of them quite ugly.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRfnevzM9kQ?feature=oembed&enablejsapi=1&origin=https://safe.txmblr.com&wmode=opaque&w=540&h=304]

But he won’t be done with that movie, apparently.. more are coming.

    From Jason Guerrasio:

But this is far from a one-and-done for Peele. He recently told Business Insider that “Get Out” is the first in a collection of movies he wants to direct that examine what he calls “social demons.”

“I have four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade,” Peele told Business Insider. “The best and scariest monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of especially when we get together. I’ve been working on these premises about these different social demons, these innately human monsters that are woven into the fabric of how we think and how we interact, and each one of my movies is going to be about a different one of these social demons.”

Peele’s examination of race and alienation in “Get Out” is an impressive, confident directorial debut. We can’t wait to see what he will throw at us next, though we’re also pretty afraid.

  • This low-budget Aussie horror film THE KILLING GROUNDS is getting rave reviews overseas

This low-budget Aussie horror film THE KILLING GROUNDS is getting rave reviews overseas

This low-budget Aussie horror film THE KILLING GROUNDS is getting rave reviews overseas:

Australian movies are often so much more real, brutal… startlingly hardcore to the core.. This movie seems the same. For as much lavish praise that the film is getting, it is also receiving this:

Critics have been quick to praise the fact that the violence in Killing Ground(although brutal) is never exploitative, something Power attributes to his time as a censor. “I’ve definitely had a long professional interest in how we watch violence. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just a violent film but a film about violence and what violence does.”

Power feels movie violence is often — wrongly — presented as a heroic option.

“I wanted the film to ask the question ‘What would happen in real life? What would actually happen if I was faced with this threat?’ Because the answer is often different to what happens in the movies. This violence feels very real and I think that’s what people are responding to.”

I think back to one of the most famous Aussie films in my life: FORTRESS. As a kid, and to this day, that movie scared the wits out of me more than anything made in America.

This new movie seems like to could be the same:

What sets Killing Ground apart from other thrillers is its unconventional structure. The film intertwines three separate stories, seemingly in different times and spaces: Two lovers on a weekend getaway; a family in peril and a pair of redneck psychopaths baying for blood.

Clive Barker Will Develop $300,000 Horror Movie With Winner of Upcoming Contest

Clive Barker Will Develop $300,000 Horror Movie With Winner of Upcoming Contest :

From Feb. 13 to March 17, filmmakers can head projectgreenlight.com to upload a pitch (one to three minutes) of an original horror film concept. Ten semi-finalists will be selected and voted on by the public as well as a judging panel. The winner of the audience vote will advance, along with four chosen by the judges. Those five finalists will receive funding to shoot a short scene to show off their chops.

In June, the finalists will be invited to the second annual Shudder Labs, a creative retreat where they will receive more guidance on how to enhance their scenes. Then one winner will be selected to develop their film with Barker serving as executive producer.

    Such a good idea.. Inventive.
And it continues to help in the modern rebirth of horror..
    Will be watching ..

  • Freddy fans getting their wish: Robert Englund is coming back

Freddy fans getting their wish: Robert Englund is coming back

Just for one documentary .. not a work of fiction, but a culmination of Englund’s entire life as Freddy Krueger..

EW had the exclusive story.. Highlights:

Directed by Mike Kerz, the film finds Englund recalling his years playing Elm Street villain Freddy Krueger and paying tribute to filmmaker Wes Craven while makeup effects artist Robert Kurtzman transforms the actor into the feared dream-stalker. The film will also track Englund as he meets fans and Freddy and is interviewed in full makeup by horror host Svengoolie.

“Nightmares in the Makeup Chair is my love letter to the Nightmare on Elm Streetseries and to practical makeup,” says Englund in a statement. “I’ve always been in awe of the multi-talented makeup effects artists. From sketching to sculpting, they realize the design. Then to the fine precision of the molding and the manufacturing of the makeup appliances which are nearly paper thin. And then, the application process where I sit in the makeup chair and I become their living canvas as they glue me in and paint the appliances. This documentary not only captures their talent, but I think it might inspire a new generation of practical effects artists. I was happy to become Freddy once again to share the makeup process with the fans.”

The swan song of the 20th century will be complete now with Fred appearing in the Fedora one last time..
    DOCU STYLE..

But … what fans may fear: This is probably Englund saying by to fans in Freddy garb to drop the news that he is never coming back again..

  • RINGS around the past

    RINGS around the past

Recently I was able to view the movie the RING with a few people.. one of those in the viewing party was someone born slightly before the original movie came out..  She had no idea what was scary about a VHS cassette tape. Probably didn’t even understand what a VHS tape even was. And even with the creepy nature of the movie the RING, and then visually appealing horror symbolism and dark colors presented in the film, the movie ended up not being very scary for her.

I realized then.. 13 years has really moved out society along quickly.

The things that were scary in the 90s were lampooned in the early 2000s by SCARY MOVIE.. the creepy gore films of the mid 2000s are old news. The new horror is visceral. It’s real. Gone are the campy films of teenage sex but here are the new modern days of birth defects, mental illness, war, and poverty. They are the themes of horror – the scary movies are just elements of the real fear of society.

I say all of this because there is a new movie coming out this year called RINGS. You can view it here:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p17DJbPRLc0?feature=oembed&enablejsapi=1&origin=https://safe.txmblr.com&wmode=opaque&w=540&h=304]

You are looking at that right. It’s a sequel. Sequel-ish..

    The description:

A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before

I am going to give this a chance.. It will be interesting to see how a video tape themed horror film will be changed and made modern for the new century.. A part of me actually thinks the original movie presents a problem for getting an audience in the new age. Kids of today, seriously, just don’t like the original RING. And that dislike and scorn because of the late 20th century technology in the RING could cause people to turn away from this movie just as easily.

Or .. they can pander to the modern age and made things really, really tech-centric. And then.. insult the 30 somethings like me who loved the RING when it originally came out.

This is a pretty cool story – the Cleveland couple has made the horror movie set into something interesting: BBQ food, a gift shop, and homages throughout the location to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

The couple has long been fans of the movie.. But get this: the couple invested $300,000 to fix the property!

KVUE, an ABC affiliate, has the full story with video.

I am going to put this on my bucket list of places I’d like to visit… I am sure you would too.

  • Why I should not take horror movie advice from COSMOPOLITAN magazine

Why I should not take horror movie advice from COSMOPOLITAN magazine

I got duped into click bait today.. while perusing my morning newsfeed over coffee this Sunday I stumbled upon a link someone promoted from COSMO saying the ‘best horror movies from the year you were born’ .. Should you also want to be tricked into losing about 5 minutes of your life you’ll never get back here is the link.

It did not take much for them to come up with.. it is just click bait especially around this time of year. But to showcase how inept they were at choosing some, look no further than the pick for the year 2001:

With no disrespect meant for SNOOP DOG or his bones, this was not the best film of 2001.. recall: This was also the year that the OTHERS came out.. and the best film of the year, without question (and back in the annals of HORROR REPORT history, I chose it as my movie of the year that year) was JEEPERS CREEPERS. Even though Victor Salva made it..

So that is that. A flawed list.. And a list that gave 2009 to JENNIFER’S BODY (even though I liked it it was NOT the top movie of 09) .. and gave 2016 to GHOSTBUSTERS–in a year when horror in cinema made a comeback and kicked rear at box offices.

Yes.. avoid clickbait. Especially near Halloween.

Then again.. Jennifer’s Body wasn’t THAT bad..
