Tenet made only $6.7 million during its second Friday-to-Sunday, which calculates to a 66.5 percent drop from weekend to weekend.. the film cost $200 mil to make.
This movie have done huge numbers in any other year, besides a 2020 cursed release.. There has been a particular focus on Tenet‘s release given the fact was set up to be a guinea pig of sorts for the industry to get a grasp on the potential of releasing a big blockbuster movie during the on-going pandemic, and thus far the reaction hasn’t exactly been positive..
These numbers showcase the true world of hurt that movie chains and studios are in right now.. 70% of theaters in America are open right now, but major cities like LA and NYC are keeping theirs closed. And even of the buildings open, there are stringent rules for social distancing with mostly empty theater rooms..
This is also the reason why several films, including WONDER WOMAN 1984 have delayed October releases.. Just a few more weeks.. just a few more hopes. And maybe this will all get better.. Or maybe it won’t.
Netflix issued an apology Thursday after thousands signed a petition demanding the immediate removal of the controversial French film “Cuties” from the streaming platform.
The movie, about an 11-year-old who rebels against her family and joins a “free-spirited dance crew,” is accused in the online campaign of sexualizing young girls “for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles.” Originally titled “Mignonnes,” the project premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won a jury award for directing.
Netflix said
We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.
The film is about the over sexualization if girls in dance .. a conversation that man say needs to be had but not with a hyper sexualized cover depicting girls in a sultry setting..
This is how one Twitter user pointed out the differences of the original cover into what Netflix decided to do:
Theaters are beginning to slowly roll out reopening plans.
AMC is among those offering dirt price films for people brave enough to re-enter the old world..
During its opening-day promotion, AMC will show catalog films, including “Ghostbusters,” “Black Panther,” “Back to the Future” and “Grease.” Those older films will continue to play afterward for $5.
AMC, the nation’s largest movie theater chain, confirmed that Disney’s much-delayed “New Mutants” will debut in theaters Aug. 28, with Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” to follow Sept. 3.
Theaters will have reduced capacity along with social distancing standards.
“Please remember to social distance before, during and after the movie. Directional signs and reminders will be posted throughout the theater for guidance,” AMC’s website reads.
That seems appropriate, right? So many movie chains closed due to COVID.. but on August 28, it appears that anti social distancing will take place and NEW MUTANTS will be alive and well in safe theaters across the nation.
Unless something else changes. In 2020 anything is possible.
20TH CENTURY released a ‘meet the cast’ of the NEW MUTANTS:
Some have joked online that by the time NEW MUTANTS would be released they would be old mutants.
But it seems like the date may finally give us the film?
Showtimes have been listed for Dolby and Cinemark theaters.. Marcus Theaters are showing movies at 30% capacity and distanced seating with masks required.
AMC and REGAL are going to also be opening some theaters this week .. Of course we will see if there is a ‘FIELD OF DREAMS’ response (if you reopen.. they will come..)
In its latest survey on US adults’ comfort level with certain activities, conducted Friday to Monday, Morning Consult found that most respondents were more comfortable with other activities like going out to eat or going to a shopping mall. Morning Consult surveyed 2,200 US adults, and just 17% said they would be comfortable going to the movies immediately, a dip from about 20% earlier this month.
NEW MUTANTS may change that for some fans who have eagerly anticipated the film for —-years.
And remember: The initial teaser for this film came out 3 YEARS AGO.
After all that time.. they seem to be ready to finally arrive..;
WONDER WOMAN toys grace Walmarts around the nation.. but the kids jst don’t get it.
1984 was not released (though this year felt more like Orwell’s 1984 than anything else) ..
NO other big time summer blockbusters busted blocks either.
Covid-19 shut it down.. shut it all down.
So how are movie theater chains responding? ENTER AMC!
AMC theaters have reopened in numerous international countries but have remained shuttered in the U.S. since March. The chain touted the reopening as “Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices.” And now this: Thursday that it expects to open the doors to more than 100 cinemas — or about a sixth of its nationwide locations — on Aug. 20 with throwback pricing for a day.
During its opening-day promotion, AMC will show catalog films, including “Ghostbusters,” “Black Panther,” “Back to the Future” and “Grease.” Those older films will continue to play afterward for $5!
Theaters have an increased challenge in facing COVID.. tight cramped theaters that loved the idea of filling theaters to the max. Now social distancing and masks are the ideals to be met.
The 1918 flu halted Hollywood, too. This isn’t new.
On Oct. 11, L.A. City Hall ordered all theaters, motion picture houses, theaters and places of amusement closed until further notice. In all, 83 movie theaters were closed, shutting out thousands of film fans every week. “Did the young man pleasure-bent seek recreation at his favorite matinee or picture theater?” the Los Angeles Times asked. “Lo, a sign greeted him ‘closed by order of the health commissioner.’”
Studios were also coming to terms with the dangers of filming during the outbreak. Word arrived from New York that popular actor Bryant Washburn had infected co-star Anna Q. Nilsson while shooting Venus in the East. On Oct. 16, Frank Garbutt, vp and West Coast manager of Lasky Photoplay Corp., announced that three pictures in production were being rushed and that most of the studio would go dark for a month. The Metro, Mack Sennett and Triangle studios followed suit. Stars like Constance and Norma Talmadge agreed to forgo their salaries so that regular employees could continue to work.
As silent-film producer Benjamin Hampton told it, panic set in as the still-young “studios closed entirely, or operated on part time, and pessimists croaked that this was the beginning of the end.” Popular Metro matinee idol Harold Lockwood, 31, died of the influenza Oct. 19, and Russia’s first movie star, Vera Kholodnaya, would also succumb to the Spanish flu in Odessa, breaking the hearts of millions of European fans.
Everything was awesome.. not so much for the second run!
According to Variety, The LEGO Movie 2 is still expected to top the box office at the end of this opening weekend, but with an estimated domestic gross of $31 million from 4,303 theaters.
If the movie does open at this dollar figure, it would amount to a 50% drop off of its 2014 debut..
It has been a number of years since that original film.. Kids who saw it grew up.. parents who saw it then stepped on enough legos to movie on..
While the film will still be the number 1 film of the weekend and make money, it’s not what was hoped for..
There have been four LEGO movies in the current film franchise so far. For comparison, here are the domestic box office openings:
The LEGO Movie – 2014 – $69 million The LEGO Batman Movie – 2017 – $53 million The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – 2019 – $31 million (estimate) The LEGO Ninjago Movie – 2017 – $20 million
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has been named the best animated feature of 2018 at the 46th Annual Annie Awards, sweeping all seven categories in which it was nominated and giving the film a prize that has predicted the Oscar animated-feature winner more than 70 percent of the time.
The awards were handed out at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus on Saturday night by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood
This is well deserved.. the film may have been the best animated movie in a generation and quite honestly the best movie of 2018 in its entirety..
Chris Pratt joined some others like Karen Gillan, in insisting that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen.
“I promise there’ll be a third movie,” Pratt told Variety at the Lego Movie 2 premiere. “I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way.”
“We’re still circling the city of Jericho, I like to say,” Pratt told Variety.
Glass is still slicing through its competitors to hold onto the top spot at the box office. The M. Night Shyamalan thriller tops the box office for the third week running with an estimated $9.5 million in ticket sales at 3,665 theaters in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday, bringing its North American total to $88.7 million. Globally, it’s brought in an estimated $199 million. STX Films’ The Upside also holds onto its momentum in its fourth weekend, coming in second with $8.6 million across 3,568 theaters, while the only nationwide new release Miss Bala takes the third place slot with an estimated $6.7 million across 2,203 theaters. The overall weekend take paints a dismal picture amounting to the worst Super Bowl weekend at the movies since 2000. It’s a rare weekend where every film failed to pass the $10 million mark. Inclimate weather across the United States likely contributed to the steep decline in movie-going.
The HORROR REPORT can attest to the fact that GLASS is a divisive and amazingly imaginative and very M NIGHT SHYAMALAN movie.. It’s filled with newfound ways to showcase filmography.. it is coupled with dialogue, twist endings, re-twist endings, and fantastic acting from the main characters in the film.. It is also something that will be debated in the UNBREAKABLE fan circles for years to come.
Personally we loved GLASS for what it was, a culmination of 20 years of comic book heroism… As a stand alone movie, it was bad.. when taken into the context of previous films it was a finale worth seeing..
And yes, the main point of the EW article is the low SUPER BOWL box office numbers.. but people are still seeing GLASS.. some of them repeatedly..
FINAL BOX OFFICE TALLY..
