Covid baby let the good times roll!

A new study suggests people kept traveling even if they may have had COVID-19

A new study out of College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University is blunt: People kept traveling and going about their daily lives–even when they were experiencing COVID symptoms!

“We could not detect any significant change of movement when people should self-quarantine. On the other hand some people almost did not leave home since the beginning of the pandemic, while others move freely around,” says Dr. Janusz Wojtusiak in a university release.

Wojtusiak and the team find the most common ailment volunteers continued to travel normally with was a headache. In fact, results show headaches were always listed as a symptom even if participants had other issues as well.

Other possible COVID symptoms participants experienced included coughs and sore throats.

Despite this, participants traveled an average of 139 miles each week during the study. This window during the pandemic includes periods when Virginia was under a stay-at-home order and after the mandate was lifted. The average volunteer also visited just under six different locations each week during this time.

BUT!!!

Although some volunteers may have had potential coronavirus symptoms, none actually reported suffering a COVID-19 infection. Therefore, the team could not positively link infection rates to movement in this report. The team notes future studies will include data from the winter of 2020, when health officials noted another virus surge in many areas.

COVID patients changing?

The changing faces of COVID patients .. younger.. and now more brain issues?

So often when we post COVID related links and news, the feedback we hear is that we are fear mongering and creating chaos.. that the world has ‘moved on.’

But despite the lessening media attention, every time a vaccine goes into an arm, an angel gets its wings.

Covid is alive and well. . . Across America and the world. While some nations are in awe at the United States’ vaccine administration, it has yet to be seen if there is a long term ‘booster’ that will be necessary and how varying variants will end up acting.

That is why a few news snippets are a little troubling..

From INDIA, things seem to have spiraled desperately out of control.

Hospitals in Delhi have warned they are at breaking point. At the Holy Family Hospital, intensive care units are full and there is no room for any more beds.

“Almost every hospital is on the edge. If oxygen runs out, there is no leeway for many patients,” Dr Sumit Ray told the BBC.

“Within minutes, they will die. You can see these patients: they’re on ventilators, they require high-flow oxygen. If the oxygen stops, most of them will die.”

India is now seeing the surge of all surges…

Graphic of India Covid cases

At the Jaipur Golden Hospital, a doctor told the BBC the government had allocated 3.6 tonnes of oxygen, to be delivered by 17:00 on Friday.

However, the supply – a fraction of what was promised – only arrived at midnight, he told the BBC.

From London: Thousands have taken to the streets to protest.. They are protesting lockdowns and vaccine passports ..

Meanwhile .. back in my own home land.

I was speaking to a friend today .. he is an RN at a local hospital here in Pennsylvania where we write our dispatches from..he said while the hospital he works at has become understaffed due to the pressures on some forcing them to quit, something else recently has been more concerning.

The plight of the COVID patient has gone from respiratory fatigue to mental anguish. He said that patients, in the past two weeks, have been actively removing their medical devices, fighting back, and having brain fog beyond anything seen before. It seems as though this new version of COVID, whatever this new variant that is hitting, has caused much more brain and overall confusion.

Yes, he confirms that breathing issues are still happening. The typical COVID infection stuff.. but now the new type of sickness includes complete and total cognitive skills being deluged by this new variant.

He even conjured that perhaps this is an altogether new virus.

The breakthrough at the nursing home

A story about a Kentucky nursing home illustrates how vaccines may affect “breakthrough“ cases of COVID-19

As vaccines are distributed throughout the nation, a weary world wonders how much of an effect they will have on stopping, or at least slowing the pandemic. Several states are still surging, and the nation of India is having dramatic and traumatic results from a surge causing more than 300,000 cases daily now.

Back in the United States, news of a “breakthrough“ case surgeon a Kentucky nursing home is giving us a trial run on how effective the vaccines can be.

Here is the information about what occurred:

An unvaccinated health care worker set off a Covid-19 outbreak at a nursing home in Kentucky where the vast majority of residents had been vaccinated, leading to dozens of infections, including 22 cases among residents and employees who were already fully vaccinated, a new study reported Wednesday. Most of those who were infected with the coronavirus despite being vaccinated did not develop symptoms or require hospitalization, but one vaccinated individual, who was a resident of the nursing home, died, according to the study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Altogether, 26 facility residents were infected, including 18 who had been vaccinated, and 20 health care personnel were infected, including four who had been vaccinated. Two unvaccinated residents also died.

This report may be the most troubling of the “breakthrough“ reports, and it is also unknown as to what the variant was which caused this outbreak.

Another report on this Kentucky nursing home outbreak indicates that people who had vaccines were less likely to get serious effects.

Meanwhile back in India, the nation is now closing in on over 300,000 cases daily and hospitals are fighting to have enough oxygen to give people.

Earth Day: Ira Einhorn the unicorn killer

The interesting back story of Earth Day’s self professed co founder

Today is Earth Day. While the events of the day are heralded to showcase the plight of pollution, or as we now call it, climate chaos, the way it all began sure is interesting..

Flashback to Ira Einhorn.. the “unicorn killer.”

A self-proclaimed environmental activist, Einhorn made a name for himself among ecological groups during the 1960s and ’70s.. he was from Philadelphia had he was the ultimate hippie.

He called himself the co-founder of Earth Day. Organizers don’t necessarily like that idea. He was a speaker at the first Earth Day, and he said he helped create the movement. But others like Philly Mag say they aren’t buying it.

Why run from Einhorn?

When his girlfriend of five years, Helen “Holly” Maddux, moved to New York and broke up with him, Einhorn threatened that he would throw her left-behind personal belongings onto the street if she didn’t come back to pick them up. On Sept. 9, 1977, Maddux went back to the apartment that she and Einhorn had shared in Philadelphia to collect her things, and was never seen again. When Philadelphia police questioned Einhorn about her mysterious disappearance several weeks later, he claimed that she had gone out to the neighborhood co-op to buy some tofu and sprouts and never returned.

Eighteen months later, investigators searched Einhorn’s apartment after one of his neighbors complained that a reddish-brown, foul-smelling liquid was leaking from the ceiling directly below Einhorn’s bedroom closet. Inside the closet, police found Maddux’s beaten and partially mummified body stuffed into a trunk that had also been packed with Styrofoam, air fresheners and newspapers.

Just one year ago, the unicorn killer died in prison.

34 years later: The NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 poster revisited

Something remained ingrained in the brain about DREAM WARRIORS. Maybe it was the fact that kids who were forgotten in society bound together defeat the man of their dreams. They also had to encounter their own personal hell. Drug addiction.. fear. . outcasts.. disabilities.

It was a cold day in February 1987.. theaters were alive and screaming with the debut of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3.. the Dream Warriors.

Recently it was reported that Wes Craven came to dislike this sequel the most, even while horror fans showcase it as one of the greatest sequels (and maybe movies) of all of the NIGHTMARE saga..

I even remember myself, strolling around a local mall that is now no more. I was the tender age of 6. Memories abound of the famed NIGHTMARE 3 poster. It was one of the greatest movie posters of all time. It also remains as one of the most nostalgic pieces of horror from the 1980s.

FEB 28 1991: GULF WAR I ENDED. Then the real war began.

February 28, 1991: The Gulf War ended .. at least for the first time.

The war in Vietnam was called ‘forgotten.’ People at home soured on the entanglement in South Asia. If that was the forgotten war, then the Gulf War I was the forgotten victory.

30 fast years ago today, headlines across the world blared “PEACE!” The Pottsville REPUBLICAN went even a step further by labeling Thursday February 28, 1991 as ‘PEACE ON EARTH’.. At least they ended the phrase with a a question mark.

The very short Gulf War was over. The United States declared that its mission to extricate Saddam Hussein’s forces from the tiny nation of Kuwait to be a success.

CNN agreed, with their booming ratings and 24/7 live coverage of bombs bursting in the air, a new age of information had been born. Even though CNN gave us incredibly questionable video showing live coverage that looked more like a Monty Python skit:

America was breathing a sigh of relief and celebration the night of February 28, 1991. There were months of pressure in the American psyche and the world landscape. Some wondered if Saddam would use his perilous weapons that killed his own people. There were rumors of Iraqi soldiers murdering babies by taking them out of incubators. That story was one of the leading talking points the American government utilized to rally the nation to war in Iraq.

Nayirah al-Ṣabaḥ testifeid before Congress about the atrocity. She said she saw it happen. It most likely never did.

The LA TIMES reported about the incubator story as the war effort ended .. and they questioned in 1992 whether the story of babies being killed was even true or just Bush Administration propaganda.

By the early 2000s (and before Gulf War II began) it was largely known that the story of Iraqis killing babies was fake.

By the time the war effort ended, America was adorned with yellow ribbons on trees in virtually every town in every state. This tribute to American soldiers was genuine and true. At the time of 1990 as the Persian Gulf crisis heated up as ‘Operation Desert Shield,’ columnist Mike Royko humorously described the yellow ribbon crisis across America. He wrote of how 3,000 Americans were reportedly being held hostage in in Iraq.

Sure, I know that. That’s all the TV blabbermouths have been talking about. But there are 250 million Americans who ain’t being held hostage in Iraq, and that is a lot more people. And if we’re going to eyeball-to-eyeball with this creep, we gotta knock off the yellow-ribbon stuff.’

100 hours after Operation Desert Storm began, all actions were suspended. The brief war was over. President George Bush addressed the nation late February 28:

The elation over victory in 1991 was short lived. While parades and jubilation welcomed troops home from the Gulf, it was not long before a recession assisted in leading to the election of a new President one year later when Bill Clinton won the 1992 election..

Important decisions were made in 1991 to not continue a march to Baghdad and take out Saddam Hussein. He was left in power to remain the repugnant ‘bad guy’ that UN weapons inspectors would deal with for another decade. United States bombing missions were often done..

Though Bush 1 was kicked from office in defeat, Bill Clinton continued the policies in Iraq, issuing his first military action as the summer began in 1993, saying:

“These actions were directed against the Iraqi government, which was responsible for the assassination plot. Saddam Hussein has demonstrated repeatedly that he will resort to terrorism or aggression if left unchecked. Our intent was to target Iraq’s capacity to support violence against the United States and other nations, and to deter Saddam Hussein from supporting such outlaw behavior in the future. Therefore, we directed our action against the facility associated with Iraq’s support of terrorism, while making every effort to minimize the loss of innocent life.”

Before Clinton the 1996 election, Clinton did it again:

During the Monica Lewisnsky scandal, Clinton continued bombing campaigns. something that was lampooned by Saturday Night LIVE:

THE REST BECOMES HISTORY

The Reagan administration and its special Middle East envoy, Donald Rumsfeld, did little to stop Iraq developing weapons of mass destruction in the 1980s, even though they knew Saddam Hussein was using chemical weapons “almost daily” against Iran..

The United States walked a tight rope by assisting both Iraq and Iran during the 1980s war.

Perhaps Saddam was inspired by that support to invade Kuwait..
Maybe he figured it was a gamble that the world would not respond to…

Saddam was wrong.

The war effort began.
And while the world got ready for operations in the Middle East, young Kuwaitis partied on as the war raged in their homeland. The Baltiomre SUN reported this in January 1991:

“They start their days at 2 in the afternoon and stay out until 5 each morning,” exclaims Ahmed Hamed, a waiter at Cairo’s spacious Safir Hotel, where a number of Kuwaiti families are waiting out the war in $3,000-a-month apartments. “At first, they tried to act nice, but now that the war has begun, and they know they will get their villas back, they are reverting to their arrogant ways.” “It is real, this discotheque problem,” sighs Ahmed al Nafisi, a former member of the Kuwaiti Parliament who now heads a citizens group here called the Kuwait Association for People’s Work. “In normal times it’s OK for people to do whatever they want. But now that people are dying on the front, it doesn’t look good to have young Kuwaiti men going to all the wrong places at the wrong times. The obvious question to many is why, instead of going to discos, don’t they enlist?”

THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS COMPLEX

America did win in 1991. But what was victory? What was the price..

The price tag continues to add up. With more and more ventures into the Middle East, the United States may not look at Gulf War I not as victory but as just a beginning battle in a long war.

George Bush declared war and victory..
George W. Bush declared war again … and a “mission accomplished” on a carrier flight deck. In the aftermath of 9/11, it was clear that Iraq had nothing to do with that attack. Despite the obvious, we were sending over a hundred thousand American soldiers to the nation a year later…

It’s fair to say that Gulf War II continues with 2,500 troops in Iraq.

While this is the lowest number since 2001, it’s also noteworthy that President Joe Biden has not publicly closed a door on sending further troops. Recently, Biden authorized an air strike in Syria as a message to Iran.

30 years since the war ended, Iraqis now view oil in their nation as a curse.

On the home front, Gulf War syndrome continues to be an albatross around the necks of those who fought in the Persian Gulf.

30 years sent by in the blink of an eye. But that quick blink was able to witness the events that occurred since Saddam Hussein’s forces surrendered in 1991… And gain an understanding as to how it began in the first place.

The future may be unpredictable. But we know it will involve missiles and bombs.

The Slaying of Joss Whedon

Variety follows the vampire trail..

VARIETY hits!

In a new piece on the acclaimed Hollywood site, the organization cast a wide net to interview people associated with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL.

Both of those shows were hits in the late 1990s through the early 2000s.

Long term readers of the HORROR REPORT may recall author “Mr Benson” writing weekly takes on the episodes as their aired.

But producer and writer Whedon has been embroiled in an old fashioned Hollywood feeding frenzy since early winter.

Stars from both shows socially-media distanced themselves from him.

This event occurred after revelations of verbal abuse on the set.

Along with that, years of other allegations of bullying have followed Whedon in his career..

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

VARIETY reports:

Interviews that Variety conducted with 11 individuals who worked directly on “Buffy” or “Angel,” or were closely familiar with the productions during their runs on The WB and UPN, painted a portrait of Whedon as a talented, collaborative writer-producer with a pattern of inappropriate, imperious and disparaging behavior toward those who worked for him. Whedon created a “cult of personality” around himself, according to these sources. Those on the inside of Whedon’s circle basked in his attention, praise and friendship; those on the outside got the opposite: scorn, derision and callousness. (Everyone Variety spoke with did so on condition of anonymity, either so they could speak freely or out of concern for their careers.)

Variety also reached out to 40 other actors, writers, producers and directors from “Buffy” and “Angel” — including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amber Benson, Eliza Dushku, David Boreanaz and Alyson Hannigan — all of whom declined to participate in this story.

MEANWHILE..

Sarah Michelle Gellar is reportedly severing her relationship with Whedon and future return shows…

INDEED…WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE..?

VACCINE 3: JOHNSON & JOHNSON EMERGENCY USE AUTHORIZED

The vaccine, made by Janssen, J&J’s vaccine arm, is safe and effective, and it’s considered flexible. It’s a single dose, and it doesn’t require special storage.

  • The FDA has authorized third vaccine with Johnson & Johnson one-shot jab to be distributed as early as Monday
  • By the end of March, J&J has said it expects to deliver 20 million doses to the U.S., and 100 million by summer
  • Worldwide, company aims to produce 1 billion doses globally by the end of 2021
  • Johnson & Johnson shot only requires a single shot compared to Pfizer and Moderna’s jabs

VARIOUS MEDIA REPORTING..

The vaccine, made by Janssen, J&J’s vaccine arm, is safe and effective, and it’s considered flexible. It’s a single dose, and it doesn’t require special storage.

The vaccine is authorized for people ages 18 and older.

New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson said 20 million doses would be delivered in the US by the end of March. The company plans to deliver 100 million doses during the first half of 2021.

The doses can be stored in a standard fridge, unlike the ultra-cold conditions required by the other two vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech, both of which are two-shot regimes.

“We need a vaccine that can be quickly mass produced,” Dr. Greg Poland, head of the Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, said Friday. “We’d want to see a reasonable duration of efficacy and protection.

Developing..

The day before tomorrow

Climate change experts now know how important the Gulf Stream is. Despite Matt Lauer making fun of Art Bell and Whitley Streiber about it back in 1999..

CBS news reports this today in climate changes being noted.. And the cause thereof:

An influential current system in the Atlantic Ocean, which plays a vital role in redistributing heat throughout our planet’s climate system, is now moving more slowly than it has in at least 1,600 years. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience from some of the world’s leading experts in this field.

Scientists believe that part of this slowing is directly related to our warming climate, as melting ice alters the balance in northern waters. Its impact may be seen in storms, heat waves and sea-level rise. And it bolsters concerns that if humans are not able to limit warming, the system could eventually reach a tipping point, throwing global climate patterns into disarray.

The Gulf Stream along the U.S. East Coast is an integral part of this system, which is known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC. It was made famous in the 2004 film “The Day After Tomorrow,” in which the ocean current abruptly stops, causing immense killer storms to spin up around the globe, like a super-charged tornado in Los Angeles and a wall of water smashing into New York City.

This was the type of climate change made popular in the film THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW.. that film showcased a sudden stoppage of the gulfstream, causing a super charged storm to take over the planet with flooding rains and an immediate new ice age..

While it may not happen quite that fast (though there is some evidence of food still being newly consumed by animals in previous ice ages) the Gulf Stream is dramatically important to the way climate works across the planet. It is the super highway of weather..

New research shows that the circulation has slowed down by at least 15% since 1950.

Scientists in the new study say the weakening of the current is “unprecedented in the past millennium.” Scientists worry that it is estimated the circulation may slow by 34% to 45% if we continue to heat the planet..by the end of the century.

Art Bell and Whitley Streiber wrote THE COMING GLOBAL SUPERSTORM way back in the 20th century..

Now science accepts the impact the Gulf Stream would have over global climate.

So it is interesting to see how both authors were treated by Matt Lauer in 1999.

The dogs came back the very next day

Lady Gaga’s dogs have been returned..

GAGA DRAMA OVER..

THE DOGS ARE BACK

Lady Gaga’s two French bulldogs, which were stolen by thieves who allegedly shot and wounded the dogwalker, were recovered unharmed, Los Angeles police said Friday.

A woman brought the dogs to the LAPD’s Olympic Community Police Station, just northwest of downtown, around 6 p.m, said Captain Jonathan Tippett, commanding officer of the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Lady Gaga’s representative and detectives went to the station and confirmed that they were the dogs. The singer is currently in Rome to film a movie.
