Google feeling lucky: Secrets now coming out
GMAILed…
BOMBSHELL REPORT on how the internet giant continues to let hundreds of outside software developers scan the inboxes of millions of Gmail users who signed up for email-based services offering shopping price comparisons, automated travel-itinerary planners or other tools. Google does little to police those developers, who train their computers—and, in some cases, employees—to read their users’ emails, a Wall Street Journal examination has found
Letting employees read user emails has become “common practice” for companies that collect this type of data, says Thede Loder, the former chief technology officer at eDataSource Inc., a rival to Return Path. He says engineers at eDataSource occasionally reviewed emails when building and improving software algorithms.
“Some people might consider that to be a dirty secret,” says Mr. Loder. “It’s kind of reality.”
Neither Return Path nor Edison asked users specifically whether it could read their emails. Both companies say the practice is covered by their user agreements, and that they used strict protocols for the employees who read emails. eDataSource says it previously allowed employees to read some email data but recently ended that practice to better protect user privacy.

AIM IS DEAD! LONG LIVE AIM!
AIM IS DEAD!
LONG LIVE AIM!AOL Instant Messenger died a silent death today. It was announced many months ago that the messaging service would cease to exist in December.
And today? It was over.
DEAD..We know there are so many loyal fans who have used AIM for decades; and we loved working and building the first chat app of its kind since 1997. Our focus will always be on providing the kind of innovative experiences consumers want. We’re more excited than ever to focus on building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products.
I, like YOU, spent countless nights in the late 90s and early 2000s getting to the know the Internet while spending time in AIM. My name was Loomicide. And now… It’s AIMicicde. Gone.
And the saddest of all? YOUR BUDDY LIST IS GONE.
Can I save my Buddy List?
Unfortunately you are not able to save or export your Buddy List. The net is reborn every hour.
But those old days of the wild NET west?…..they are the the days that will never come back again.
RIP.

IMDB SHUTTING DOWN MESSAGE BOARDS!
Goodbye old century!
The new net of Facebook, less creativity, and ‘socials’ is here.. the ghetto of socials..
Take this news for instance: IMDB is announcing on its site that a primary reason so many have visited and stayed through the years is going away. Their message boards are over February 20 ..
No love is in the air after Valentine’s Day.
IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (http://ift.tt/1ulSoDG) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (http://ift.tt/2kxzCzS), Pinterest (http://ift.tt/1QJ17hJ), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).
Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.
IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.
I have long been interested in the changing and twisting habit of NET goers.. When I was young it was AOL messenger, chat rooms, and really brilliant people in message boards espousing their beliefs on just about anything.
Those days are gone.. being anonymous is gone.. your name in bold print is here.
And with each shut down of old style technology, the ghetto of social media breeds bad habits.
Sorry to say, but keep Facebook. I know I’m on it..
Twitter and Instagram too.
But the real debate and fun was on 20th century internet websites that are dying every day.Goodbye old web.
Welcome to the devolution of conversation inspired by corporate elites who save every keystroke and sell it. -

Black Mirror Mania: I love this show
I love this show.. I have avidly watched it since the program’s inception onto NETFLIX.. The pigs.. The tech… The lessons of morality and the consequences of people’s dirty deeds online. The future is now. Evident in this program: The cautionary tales of horror that can happen when tech goes wrong and the virtue of an honest life..
The newest season of Black Mirror was loaded onto Netflix around Halloween. Due to a lack of time, I have yet to watch about 1 and a half more episodes. But the pure joy I have in doing so makes me actually want to take it slow.
I recall quickly moving through the entire series of STRANGER THINGS. By the time it was done, I wanted to go back and start from the beginning.
Black Mirror is a bit different. Each program makes you ponder more than the next.. Each show has twists and turns that throw your mind into a loop of madness. Each program makes you feel like it’s real and, equally so, feel a sense of dread for our collective Internet-driven future.
The far best episode in the entire series thus far (my opinion of course) is ‘Hated in the Nation.’ Some others only call this episode solid but ‘unremarkable’ but I think it is brilliant.

It takes into account a dwindling bee population and how our society may delve into tech to save the planet, and terrorism, hacking , assassination, murder, and espionage. Along with a lot of fun grammatical uses of the F and C word for emphasis. The show was pure joy.. It was over an hour long and could have easily been a successful box office hit. But thankfully because of Black Mirror and Netflix, we can have the show beamed right to our electronic devices.
In Hated in the Nation, a technology company invents a high tech drone bee to pollinate the planet. During a hack attack, someone gets the chance to control the bee population to use it for murder. A ‘hash tag’ battle begins on social media. And the person most hated in the nation becomes a victim. That is just the beginning. It weaves itself into a moral play and a final act of redemption during the post-modem and Mortem. You just have to watch it to understand what I am talking about.. It has quickly become of the best shows/movies/things I have ever watched.
I have grown to despise so many vast portions of social media while… Of course… Using it as well. Hashtags and red flags abound … I just can’t stomach seeing the ‘trending’ words of the day. I hate myself for often looking.. But it’s how we get news. Opinions. Statements. Hell, it’s how we picked a president in 2016!
Social media.
And antisocial disorder. They go together so well.Black Mirror’s HATED IN THE NATION is a must watch for those nervous about social media’s power, or for those who think they can act on devices without consequence.
There are consequences.
Perhaps in the future, the consequences will be fatal and final. -

The kids aren’t alright: Meth nation on Tumblr
Tumblr.. the mighty fine place of the modern age that replaced the mighty fine sites of the previous. Tumblr is a mixture of Geocities and Myspace. Moving GIFs, glitter all over pages.. Websites made to be ugly instead of professional. Bloggers–many teenagers have taken to the platform–repost photos all day..
GEEK reports that one of the biggest things on Tumblr right now: Meth rage. Not against the deadly effects of the drug, but to celebrate those who do it. There is a ‘tweaker girls’ dedicated blog.. there is a meth-smoking-mom who decries how difficult it is to be a meth-tweaker mom in the modern age.
Despite the fact that this drug and the use of it only contributes to the global drug trade and Mexican cartels, kids of the day can’t figure out just how their tiny spoke of a choice on the big wheel of life is prolonging agony for anyone involved..
The best way to get a sample of Tumblr’s meth problem is the official Tweaker Nation account, which fastidiously reblogs pictures of the 100+ community members. You can also find helpful tips on preventing “Meth Mouth”, polling to find out how much ice costs where they all live, and requests to hook up all over the country.
Meth isn’t a glamorous drug. We’ve all seen pictures of rural meth-heads with sallow yellow faces and scraggly teeth. But these users are different. It’s Tumblr, after all. If you want the reblogs, you’ve gotta look good.

There are some who loudly ask: How can people reveal their entire family lives and location online, along with photos of them smoking meth, and get away with it?
….David Karp couldn’t even answer that.
In the mean time, instead of celebrating the slow death of human beings, take a quick look at a Netflix series called DRUGS INC. Perhaps your view of the beauty of tweaking addiction will alter back to reality..

FBI warns of cyber threat
Regardless of season or world menace, the threat that keeps on threatening: Cyber attacks and the grid collapse.
Bill Gertz dispatches this in the FREE BEACON:
The nationwide campaign by DHS and the FBI began March 31 and includes 12 briefings and online webinars for electrical power infrastructure companies and others involved in security, with sessions in eight U.S. cities, including a session next week in Washington.
….
The briefings will outline the details of the attacks, the techniques used by the hackers, and strategies to be used to limit risks and improve cyber security for grid organizations.
Security researchers have concluded the attack was carried out by Russian government hackers based on the type of malicious software, called BlackEnergy, that was detected in the incident.
The threat briefings followed an internal DHS intelligence report published in January that stated the risk of a cyber attack against U.S. electrical infrastructure was low.
“We assess the threat of a damaging or disruptive cyber attack against the U.S energy sector is low,” the report, labeled “for official use only,” says.

A last minute selfie gift for Christmas
The selfie stick.. both dreaded and admired at the same time.. slowly picking up steam.. others laugh. But then they secretly desire it.
But this year you can spice things up a bit more with the new and improved selfie stick.. one that looks like you’ve gotten an arm extension..
The invention was created by author Mansoon and featured on the website Omocoro..
This is the year the selfie stick took over. But 2016 may be the year where you will learn to conceal it with a giant four foot arm extension. I love pop culture.

The amazing and weird Library of Babel

There is an amazing little website called LIBRARYOFBABEL.INFO. And I would recommend you toy around a bit with it.. The site is listed as a “place for scholars to do research, for artists and writers to seek inspiration, for anyone with curiosity or a sense of humor to reflect on the weirdness of existence.” This library contains every single word that has ever been written. Every word being…
