A stroll along the Sunday morning Sidewalk
A SUNDAY MORNING SIDEWALK, Sunday November 10, 2013
A sampling of news from the world..

The horror in the Philippines is almost too much to grasp..10,000 dead from a storm? It could be that high, or higher. Yes, mother nature is cruel.. but we’re told God is not. And if He’s not, I urge someone to tell me why such events like this one happen..The death toll from the superstorm in the Philippines could reach upwards of 10,000 people. There have been some who believe it may actually end up being even higher than that..
One witness described Haiyan of being like a tsunami..
The situation is dire, but with the conditions and lack of power, it will be some time before a true accounting of the devastation is actually known.- Survivors are walking ‘like zombies’ across the ravaged landscape..
- At least one city flattened..
- All vestiges of modern life are down..
- Horror as children were ripped from their parents’ arms..
- Shocking photos revealed..
Haiyan is now on to Vietnam, where 6.5 million people are preparing and 170,000 soldiers have been drafted to reinforce homes ..
And another tropical threat is coming to the Philippines..The falling European satellite is still sending signals..
Shooting at Texas house party ends up with 2 dead and 22 injured..
STAR WARS hopefuls by the hundreds audition for parts..

GIRLS star Adam Driver may be NIGHTWING in upcoming BATMAN VS SUPERMAN movie..
Woman creates an amazing lifelike Johnny Depp cake..Hollywood Reporter laments Blockbuster: A eulogy for a three day rental..
People are mocking Blockbuster and what we, as movie watchers, used to do. I will tell you this, it wasn’t that long ago —up until about 4 years I was still renting at Blockbuster—that the store got me through many nights.. it was a shining gold light on top of a hill–quite literally for my store.. You felt like home in it.. I think people will one day miss movies this way. Same way I say we’ll miss bookstores too..
More news later.. until then, enjoy your stroll down the Sunday morning Sidewalk..

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
A folk song by Gordon Lightfoot dramatized in words and music the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.. This is the anniversary weekend of the disaster..
The haunting words of the Lightfoot song captured the emotion of the tragic event..On November 10, 1975, Lake Superior was hit with a storm that created ocean-like waves in the water body. The Edmund Fitzgerald was traveling in the storm when the captain suddenly had difficulty with taking too much water. The people who died on the ship were crew of the ship, along with a Maritime Academy cadet.. The youngest was 21, the oldest was 63.. You can find more on the ship and the sinking here..
Lightfoot considers his song about the disaster his finest work.
The HORROR REPORT agrees..[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0DqPSF2fyo]

A disturbing CNN news alert from the Philippines
This is just the beginning of what will be a horrific death toll in the wake of Superstorm Haiyan.. CNN reports this late tonight:
More than 100 people were killed in a Philippine city that took the brunt of Super Typhoon Haiyan, authorities said.
That death toll in Tacloban was the first significant casualty report in a day when authorities began surveying the devastation of a typhoon described as perhaps the strongest storm to make landfall in recorded history, with 195 mph winds and gusts of 235 mph.
Even more, there are reportedly more than just these hundreds bodies on the streets of Tacloban..
Other areas just off due to power failures will most likely have the same grim results..
The Philippine Coast Guard says 3,398 people stranded sea on multiple watercraft–another part will be harrowing rescues, often with success, and failure..
The storm is now onto Vietnam…

THOR set to rule box office this weekend
Here are the theater counts for this weekend’s box office..
THOR: THE DARK WORLD, 3841 THEATERS..
LAST VEGAS adds 17 more ..
ABOUT TIME adds another 1025..
12 YEARS A SLAVE up 734 more..FREE BIRDS AND ENDERS GAMES stays the same..
Competition is rough.. but with THOR being released on almost 4,000 screens–and being the only film with a wide release this week, it’s a shoe-in for victory in the money game..
Reviews for THOR have been less than superb, though, with CNN saying it’s far from being a great superhero movie, WIRED pointing out some imperfections, and the ATLANTIC says it has lightweight charm..
But even with all that , THOR raked in $7.1 mil with early showings Thursday night, according to DISNEY..
The question really is: Does it have staying power to last two weeks?
