Month: December 2023

  • Should 123123 be forgotten and never brought to mind

Should 123123 be forgotten and never brought to mind

    And it will be.

For months now we have been occasionally graced by friends and family mostly on Facebook reminding us that 12/31/23 is actually 123123.

    So there you go.

    “Should old acquaintance be forgot?”

WE will happily forget these memes.

As 123123 ends at 11:59pm, we will prepare ourselves to sing the famed Auld Lang Syne, despite not having a clue what it means.

“Auld Lang Syne” originated as a poem written by Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland. He wrote it in 1788, however, it wasn’t printed until after he died in 1796. “Auld Lang Syne” translates to “old long since” but the less literal meaning behind the phrase is “days gone by.” The lyrics tell the story of old friends reminiscing on their previous adventures and toasting to them with a drink.

The popularity of the song dates back about 100 years .. In 1929, Lombardo and his band played “Auld Lang Syne” as transitional music while performing at New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel during a New Year’s Eve broadcast. It was played just after midnight, and heard over radio and television airwaves. The rest became history.

There is a Reddit thread of people asking if people who sing Auld Lang Syne really understand what they are even saying. And most people can only get through the first set of lyrics anyway despite the song lingering on for a little too long.

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    And auld lang syne.

    Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
    For auld lang syne,
    We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne,

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
    And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    For auld lang syne.

    Chorus

We twa hae run about the braes
    And pu’d the gowans fine;
    But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot
    Sin auld lang syne.

    Chorus

We twa hae paidl’d i’ the burn,
    Frae mornin’ sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
    Sin auld lang syne.

    Chorus

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
    And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right guid willy waught,
    For auld lang syne.

    Chorus

    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
    And never brought to mind?
    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
    And long, long ago.

    Chorus

And for long, long ago, my dear
    For long, long ago,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
    For long, long ago
And surely youll buy your pint-jug!
    And surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
    For long, long ago.

    Chorus

We two have run about the hills
    And pulled the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered manys the weary foot
    Since long, long ago.

    Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream,
    From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
    Since long, long ago.

    Chorus

And there’s a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we’ll take a deep draught of good-will
    For long, long ago.

So with that series of verses, I vote we add in a new one. Create something of modern flare that we can actually understand. Maybe throw in a bussin or a GYOT for the kids.

Either way, the tune is still fine .. it is melancholy and brings about a mixture of sadness and joy. But the words just don’t mean anything now.

    Out with the old.

    In with the new.

By the way, did you know that 12/31/24 will be 123124?

  • 2023 AND WHERE IT GOT US

2023 AND WHERE IT GOT US

We use Holidays as markers in time. The little events that pass or collect.. all lamented or contemplated deeply over the week between Christmas and New Years. Those reflections of themes of the year, the wishes of what we did different.. and the resolutions for the future that undoubtedly will fail miserably by mid-January.

We are collectively creatures of habit.

So in that light, it is a habit that even this website considers these events, perhaps in a bigger picture style.. we review it all. We consider and think .. and predict.

2023 and where it got us? No further than 2022.. And maybe we are still stuck in a kooky weird pandemic mindset. But it sure will never feel like 2019 again. But that was the year that was, then. This is the year that was now.

2024..here we come. Never thought you’d write that year down, did you?

2023 and where it got us

THE BEST AND WORST OF THE YEAR

    So many lost in 2023

    Predictions for 2024

    Final reflections

  • PREDICTIONS AND REVIEW: 2024 AND WHAT’S TO COME

PREDICTIONS AND REVIEW: 2024 AND WHAT’S TO COME

So it’s that time again.. we predicted. We locked those prognostications in the massive secured vault, protected from the elements and storms of the year, and unsealed and opened as we end the year..

What did we predict in 2022 as the new year bloomed, and how bad was it… while we are at it, what do we see, as the great seer of sees, for magic ’24?

First we review.. the “bold” in what we say about it now. And we did BAD.

    1. The Ukraine/Russia war will drag on until about April or May.. at that time serious discussions will occur to bring a truce. This will be inspired by House Republicans becoming increasingly reluctant to give more aid to Zelenskky.. Russia may end up getting a piece carved from Ukraine for its territory as a result. Before that occurs there will be at least 2 or 3 potentials that it develops into what looks like World War III.. WRONG. The war still drags on. And as far as aid packages, while there are some who decry the money, it continues to flow..
    2. Before said war comes to a truce, an atrocity will occur in Ukraine. It will cause global outrage, but will not cause world leaders to intervene despite the horrors the world sees.. WRONG..
    3. 2023 will be a troubling year for world figures. At least 3 or more world leaders will succumb to their fate. It could be Putin. It could be Biden, It could be the Pope. Troublesome events will emerge in some nations. WRONG.. Just wrong wrong wrong.
    4. We are banking on a Papal change, and with it ‘the end.’ That was predicted by old prophecy.. Peter the Roman would be last. That does not mean the Church and the Pope are gone forever, it means something weird and new happens. A great new schism of modern time may be upon us. WRONG.. we didn’t have much hope in the Pope. But he survived to live another year..
    5. There will be serious litigation considered about how to reign in AI art. It is busy stealing copyrighted images.. it is creating a strange legal conundrum. Who do you prosecute. How. And when. The future is happening faster than law can keep up with it. When the first AI art gets to court, there is a good chance the judge won’t even understand the concept of what is being dealt with! Not yet. Maybe soon. But AI art sure is changing everything.
    6. Inflation will ease–slightly. But also will be a total collapse of certain markets. Automobiles, housing, and pensions will have a bad 2023. Bright silver linings will emerge. A new economy is coming. But so many parts of the old will die first and cause true economic pain in 2023. Eh.. kinda/ We are so desperate looking for something accurate we will hone in on ‘inflation will ease slightly.’ It did. The rest? Eh..
    7. COVID lockdowns are a thing of the past. But we will be sicker and as a whole more and more ‘sudden deaths’ will occur. Living with COVID will mean living with a weaker immune system, more disease, and more snake oil salesmen. We think we are ready to ‘live with COVID’ mentally, but physically we will be living with stronger viruses and less viral and bacterial medication. Life expectancy will drop either in 2023 or 2024 as a result. DING DING DING.. this one is so right, and yet so many are not paying any attention to the ‘died suddenly’ issue.. and certainly not paying attention to the excess deaths around the world.
    8. House Republicans will attempt to launch investigations of the Biden Administration. Everything will just be a mess. Few legislative *if any* victories will be had by either part due to a divided legislative branch. Yep! Got that right. Impeachment coming in 2024.
    9. Everything will seem unstable. Institutions. Governments. Banks. Jobs. Everything we have come to accept will look weird as events change quickly. YES. But this one was easy.
    10. Space travel will be filled with hope.. until it is not. Events will occur that will make Mars and even Moon explorations look implausible in 2023. NAH.. Maybe some other year. Not in 2023.

So there you go. We did rotten. A barely-anything-right kind of set of predictions. Everyone has an off year..

What do we see in the great year of 2024? Pain? Horror? Hope?

    Here we go..

    1. The Israel / Palestine war will ravage through spring, with more and more corpses piling up. At some point by May the world will have enough and look for a solution. But Ukraine and Russia will at time divert attention. Both wars will ease as the summer months reign.. but newfound chaos awaits in the autumn.
    2. Black swan event. We will have turmoil and tumult. At times it will feel like the world around us is ending. The only sanity we will get is if we go offline..
    3. Going offline will be in vogue in 2024. With AI tech reigning, we will distract ourselves with 20th century ideals of nature.. hiking.. We will still keep our phones attached to our bodies, but we will try to get in touch with things that once grounded us to the planet. We will need all the support from Earth as we can get in 2024’s stressful news cycles.
    4. Donald Trump will be the nominee for the Republican party. The party will attempt to force him to choose Nikki Haley as VP but he will take his own course of action.. while he will want Tucker Carlson, Tucker opts out in favor of making big bucks on X. Instead Trump goes with Kari Lake.
    5. Robert Kennedy will get 19% of the popular vote and will become the biggest third party candidate since Ross Perot. However he will take votes from both Biden and Trump..
    6. There will be NO presidential debates between Biden and Trump.
    7. AI technology will begin to really, really scare people. We will figure out that nothing we see online is written by real people. Jobs? Well we better rethink them. 2024 will showcase the end of the workforce as we know it. Construction and the building trades may be the future no one saw coming. The roaring 20s will be built by grit, not by BITs.
    8. Late January and February will be cold across North America with several snow storms. But for the most part, get ready for heat and hot and sweat. It will be a record warm 2024.
    9. There will be a new Pope by Christmas mass in December 2024.
    10. The electoral college map prediction. Get ready to freak.. we say a 269-269 tie and God knows what will happen next. Our map prediction below:

    Boom.

    Sealed.
INTO THE VAULT .. to be consumed in 2024 as we enter 2025… May we have a beautiful year and may most of what I say be wrong as hell.

  • AS THE WORLD TURNS: WELCOME 2024

AS THE WORLD TURNS: WELCOME 2024

    Happy end of 2023.

    Happy beginning of another one.

We lament the past every December–we play melancholy songs to end the calendar and have hope a new one will be better.

Every year will BE the best.. and by December every year WAS the worst.

But yet somehow we go back again.. the next year.. doing the same thing.

That is why this particular Batman comic has been poignant for me for a long time.

It is not that next year will be better, or worse.. but that it will be.

That we will make it, and a year from now be healthy and safe enough to toast what was and what will be.

As times beats on, we all take a beating.

Here’s to survival. And yes, Commissioner, hopefully we will be doing this again next new year’s eve.

    2024… as we will turn to 2025. . .

    My God.. make it stop.

  • THE BEST AND WORST OF 2023

THE BEST AND WORST OF 2023

The story of the year: WAR!

And here we thought it would be Ukraine. The sudden attack on Israel by Hamas led us into a strange place.. newfound territory and old wounds. This war is brutal. The end is not afoot. And it most likely will feature plenty more death and destruction by 2024. . War galore. And no winners in sight.

    THE PERSON OF THE YEAR

TIME MAGAZINE chose Taylor Swift. She was big and all. But earth changing? Elon Musk prevailed this year. Some say for the best. Others for the worse.. Either way we have this billionaire with us for the foreseeable future, implementing whatever he wants to on X after renaming it Twitter and still selling tons of Teslas despite them having massive recalls. For as much as people say they hate Musk, they all look up at night when they find out Starlink is above..

    Box office of the year

Barbenheimer!! Some may say Barbie was also the person of the year.

These two films collectively brought back the box office, just as much as Taylor Swift..

They were the films of the year for many.. But the collective were a boom for movie theaters that were on shaky ground..

    Some Weird of the year..

Where do we start? The crazy plane woman screaming that someone or something was not f(&(&ing real..?
    Maybe the UFOs?
Maybe the news that robots almost killed a human worker at a Tesla factory?
Maybe CHAT GPT taking over everything..?
Or maybe.. all of it. And then some.. but the biggest of the year…

The really weird of the year..

The kind that will change the world–maybe–forever?

    The aliens among us!

    This was the wild one.

The same say that a tornado was forming over the Capitol, witnesses were testifying before Congress that secret government projects exist, that the military has space aliens, and that we may know if other worldly or even inner dimensional creatures.

All this at the same time the government was actively shooting down both Chinese spy balloons and/or UAPs.

Disclosure never felt closer than in 2023.

The HORROR movie of the year

This will be controversial. Skinamarink. So many horror fans HATED it..
Yes, it was weird.. at times got a bit boring.. Confounding. But with each viewing–and we challenge you do do that–you’ll see it gets easier to digest and you’ll become more in tune with the emotions. The movie itself was surreal and made you feel deeply uneasy on multiple levels. If nothing else, it became the horror movie of the year because of that impact.

    Best Netflix of the year

Mike Flanagan is leaving Netflix.. but before he does he gave us another must see series.
This was one of the more macabre.. the deeper.. the gross at time!

In end we were glued to our TVs or devices of our choice.

If Edgar Allen Poe was alive today, he would have been too.

    Politics of the year

Mitt Romney likes hot dogs. So much that he said “hot dog” is his “favorite meat.” This video cannot be beat.. it perhaps is the best Mitt Romney ever .. Because we love it so much, you can watch it below:

    Freeze frame of the year

The multiple times that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell froze was the top .. Diane Feinstein, may God rest her soul, also was a shocking embarrassment to us as well.

The leaders are aged. But they remain. The animatronics just won’t quit.

The mug shot of the year

Anti-Trumpers called it the most important mug shot ever.

Pro-Trumpers called is the most important mug shot ever.

Not it’s on shirts, mugs, and the Trump for 2024 campaign site.

    Stop doing this in 2024

No more big giant baby gender reveal parties, please?

When your baby reveal party leads to a plane crash that kills a pilot and destroys an apartment building, you know you went too far.

    TIKTOK OF THE YEAR

The guy who lives in a vacant apartment building. While he was around for years, 2023 gave us the viral moment when TikTok user Cody (@atlcody) says the apartment complex he lives in is “abandoned.” It generated 5 million views.

    Accidental Instagram of the year

When Jamie Lee Curtis posted photos of her office, along with images of a child in a bath tub. It was all innocent, right? Sure? Maybe?

One Hit Wonder of the year

Oliver Anthony’s Rich Men North of Richmond was so huge that it was mentioned at presidential debates. It was a giant story for weeks until Taylor took over again. But in the midst, it hit a chord …

Natural (and human) disaster of the year

    Maui..

“This is strong confirmation — based on real data — that utility grid faults were likely the ignition source for multiple wildfires on Maui,” said Bob Marshall, the founder and CEO of Whisker Labs, which has 78 sensors across Maui, part of a robust network of hundreds of thousands monitoring grids across the United States.

In the days leading up the predicted hurricane winds, Hawaiian Electric did not cut power as a precaution.

The lies are products tell us are back again

We just cannot collectively escape this note!

Just this week, we were contacted by a reader who reported that that strange and unsettling note being found in grocery store products is showing up yet again just in time for New Years Eve shopping!

This time a reader reports that it fell from a package of Little Debbie’s cream filled oatmeal cookies!

The product was purchased at the Dollar General in Barnesville Pennsylvania.

For those who have found the note, it is bizarre and slightly unsettling. Those we spoke to who saw the note fall from their grocery store packages have reported feeling uneasy .. almost alarmed.. They try reading the note, attempt to understand the decipher.. and take to the internet to see what else people are saying.

In this case of the Barnesville oatmeal cookies, the reader went a step further telling us,

I’ve read it several times. I decided to goole lense it and I selected the listen function which google read it to me and it’s so different hearing it then actually reading it yourself and it’s creepy

Interestingly, this is the second time in three years the same person found the same note from a Dollar Store product in Barnesville!

We asked her if the product itself appeared to be tampered with–many have reported seeing openings in the box where notes could be slipped in. However, not this time.

This time it was inside the box. There is no possible way someone slipped it in there in the store. It was neatly folded in between the last 4 cookies in the box. There was also no evidence that it was tampered with either. Since this is the 2nd one I found, it kinda has me a little concerned, confused, and curious.

The confusion and concern is understandable!

But it also seems that it is not just this person. Our website had a seemingly strange increase in traffic over the previous week with many past stories about the “lies are products tell us” as the main searched item. We can only surmise that the item is being found in many more products given the renewed interest..

The note has taken on different forms since we first reported about it several years ago. At that time, we even attempted to re-print the text of note. Thankfully the COVID pandemic lockdowns gave us ample time to do that..

Since that time we were contacted on multiple by people finding the item in their grocery packages in the safety of their own home. Safety that suddenly feels oddly compromised when the note slips out of the box being opened.

Or in the case of the Little Debbie cookies–between them!

If you have found this note we would love hearing about it — if you know anything about it, we would equally like to know..

The lies are products tell us.. the mystery continues. AT this point it is safe to assume it is not being slipped into the boxes at grocery stores. The plot thickens when it’s couched WITHIN the box of oatmeal cookies.

  • New shaking in Tennessee

    New shaking in Tennessee

    New New Madrid worries today..

A moderate earthquake jolted eastern Arkansas and surrounding states yesterday, generating reports of shaking from hundreds of people around the New Madrid Seismic Zone (or “NMSZ” for short) north of Memphis.

According to USGS, more than 400 people reported shaking across Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri, with some reporting light damage in Missouri. It is not yet known if this earthquake is a precursor to a larger seismic event in the immediate future.

    Developing..
