    The 8.0 fear

Over the past couple of days, we’ve seen a flurry of seismic activity—Alaska had its shake-up recently, and just yesterday, Japan experienced a sizable quake along with a reported tsunami. Thankfully, it wasn’t a devastating event on the scale of 2011, but it’s still worth noting that it happened.

Now, a lot of news sites have latched onto this development. Some headlines are talking about a “megaquake warning” from Japanese meteorological agencies suggesting the possibility of an 8.0 or above quake. While it’s true there is an official advisory, the key detail is that this scenario has about a 1% probability. That’s a real number—more than zero, sure—but it’s far from a guaranteed event.

In other words, yes, the advisory is out there, and it’s wise for people in the affected areas of Japan to be prepared, but it’s not a cause for global panic. We’ve got a bit of a “shaky” global moment right now—there have been some solar flares and the usual swirl of comet rumors and end-of-year jitters—but the actual science says: be aware, not alarmed.

So, straight from the Japan Meteorological Agency: this advisory is a precaution, not a prediction. We’ll keep an eye on it, and hopefully that 1% will slip right back down to zero. After all, we’ve had enough surprises in 2025!

Saturday night live: Earthquake rattles New York City

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that an earthquake struck northern New Jersey on Saturday night. Originally reported stronger it was set to a 3.0 — but residents still felt it loud and clear.

Reports poured in from across New York City and surrounding areas, with many describing loud booms, noticeable shaking, and a brief moment of unease as the ground gave a jolt.

This follows a massive earthquake in Russia last week, and it seems the planet is keeping everyone on their toes.

On this Saturday night, the earth gave a subtle but stern reminder to millions:
    She’s still in charge.

    🌋 Klyuchevskoy Volcano… Now It’s Your Turn.

After last night’s Earth-shaking 8.8 magnitude quake — a monster that rattled the Ring of Fire and triggered a tsunami across the Pacific — the planet isn’t done yet.

Now, Klyuchevskoy — the largest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere — has erupted.

According to the Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service:

    > “A descent of burning hot lava is observed on the western slope. Powerful glow above the volcano. Explosions.”

    The Earth isn’t just restless.
    It’s moving.

THIS IS A MEGAQUAKE!! USGS upgrades! Now an 8.8 quake in the Ring of Fire

PREVIOUS THE QUAKE WAS BEING REPORTED AS AN 8.0! THEN AN 8.7.. And now it has been upgraded again to an 8.8!!

Original post, with strength of quake corrected:

This is a developing story. An 8.7 8.8 earthquake has been reported near Russia, and there is a tsunami threat being assessed across the Pacific Ocean….

It was originally reported as an 8.0..and then an 8.7..

The powerful 8.7 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 100 miles offshore, at a depth of about 20 miles, in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.

California quake; more than 100 other ones reported today in the state

USGS is reporting significant seismic activity in California this morning with more than 100 earthquakes being reported across northern California.

The largest of the bunch is a magnitude 7.0 event which struck west-northwest of Petrolia, California on the northern coast of the state. Also of note is a significant swarm of earthquakes striking just south of Clear Lake and north of San Francisco, where 77 earthquakes there alone struck within the last 24 hours.

Hundreds of people across California and Oregon have already reported to USGS they felt the strong off-shore earthquake.

    Cuba quake felt in Florida

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 shook eastern Cuba on Sunday, after weeks of hurricanes and blackouts that have left many on the island reeling.

The epicenter of the quake was located about 25 miles south of Bartolome Maso, Cuba, according to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several places including cities as far as Jamaica and Florida felt the shaking from thr strong quake..

Tri-Shake quake update: We love the way the New York POST commemorated the event

Great cover! A WOBBLY headline with a Statue of Liberty shocked by the event.. the biggest quake in 140 years and luckily for New York still some newspapers to keep a print record of the event..

And now since the quake occurred, so have aftershocks: A LOT of aftershocks. As of midnight, New Jersey was up to 21 earthquakes for the day. 20 of them are probably aftershocks of the first, a potent 4.8, but we won’t be certain until the sequence ends. USGS says more earthquakes are likely over the next 30 days. They have updated their aftershock forecast once again:

The POST has that and other summaries written about the tri-shake quake that affected 40 million people..

  • Earthquake: East Coast

    Earthquake: East Coast

You don’t see these headlines every day. You don’t FEEL these earthquakes usually on the East Coast..

On the heels of massive quakes globally–including a building-swaying seismic experience in Taiwan this week–the East Coast of the United States was hit with a tri-state shaker Friday morning..

While there was no major damage–millions of people who don’t experience this suddenly felt a strange sense of doom without the gloom..

The U.S. Geological Survey said over 42 million people might have felt the midmorning quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, or about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of New York City and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Philadelphia.

    It just felt wrong..
    It felt creepy..

Six aftershocks have already hit New Jersey, and more could be on the way, according to USGS, after a strong 4.8 earthquake struck Tewksbury Township earlier today. USGS has circled a zone around today’s primary earthquake where aftershocks could continue to occur for the next week. The aftershocks are from the strong earthquake that struck northern New Jersey earlier today at 10:23 am.

Today’s earthquake in New Jersey was the strongest the Garden State has seen in nearly 250 years, and 3rd strongest on record for the state with records going as far back as 1737. The only 2 stronger ones were a 5.2 magnitude event in 1737 and 5.3 magnitude event in 1783.

However.. this would not be fun without a conspiracy theory.. Did the MILITARY cause today’s quake!

Remember this article over the next few days: Loud explosions and ground shaking will be possible in portions of central and southern New Jersey on April 7, 20, and 21. No, it won’t be thunder: the U.S. Military is warning of a series of upcoming exercises   that could be a “high noise” event in New Jersey with loud explosions; the weather will play a role in just how far noise will travel and what it’ll sound like when it arrives.  In an update released by the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, the loudest exercises are expected across three days in April.
