A quick succession of dozens of earthquakes struck Japan’s main island of Honshu today – the worst being a 7.6 magnitude that hit at 4.10pm local time.

The quakes triggered urgent tsunami alerts, with officials warning that waves could be as high as 16ft in some places.

Already waves of 3ft have been battering parts of Japan’s west coast.

The worst affected areas are Toyama, Ishikawa and Niigata, which are now facing the risks of landslides and collapsing houses as aftershocks are set to continue for the next few days.

Horrendous situation in Morocco..

Tremendous loss of life and building structure in Morocco..

Devastating and developing ..

Rescuers in Morocco are searching for survivors from Friday’s powerful earthquake. More than 2,000 people are confirmed dead, and rescuers warn the toll is still expected to rise.
The worst damage and destruction has been in isolated mountain areas, which are difficult to access. Residents have described whole villages suffering damage and rescuers unable to retrieve bodies from rubble.
In Marrakech, the nearest major city, many residents spent a second night sleeping on the streets, too afraid to return to their homes. Historic sites in the popular tourist destination have been damaged.

A tropical earthquake

How about that timing.. a quake and a hurricane at the same time..

The timing sure is strange, while Southern California braces for its first tropical storm, and 80+ years and earthquake struck. How about that…. a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the quake was in Ojai, between Santa Barbara and Ventura, and it occurred along the Sisar fault, USGS data showed.

There were no immediate reports of damage, the Ventura County Sheriff said in a social media post.

Shaking was felt throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities, according to a USGS tool that allows residents to self-report their experience. About 50 miles away in Valencia, the quake felt like a slow roll, lasting about 20 seconds. Residents reported a slow-rolling effect in the Hollywood area, as well.

At least two aftershocks — measuring 3.1 and 3.6 — followed the initial quake.

There were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries.

The pre-dawn temblor lasted only seconds but a number of people took to social media to describe being shaken from sleep when the quake hit shortly after 1:30 a.m.

A seismic analyst monitoring the quake for the USGS Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado, called it the latest in a series of shakes in recent months but stronger than usual.
