Disease control agencies issue safety alerts after death of Darya Shipilova at Siberian laboratory.. China is now stepping up efforts to halt a plague before it gets in.. Officials in the Chinese border city of Manzhouli said it was important to strengthen surveillance in partnership with port and customs authorities, to prevent the potential spread of disease as people and cargo travelled from Russia.

The World Health Organization has said it still does not have enough information to rule out a lab accident after the death of a worker in a Russian plague lab.

Last week reports emerged that Darya Shipilova, a lab worker in Irkutsk, Siberia, had died of pneumonic plague after dropping a test tube containing samples of the pathogen Yersinia pestis, which causes the disease.

While people in the West are mocking amped up media attention to the initial case of the mysterious pneumonia, speculation about a potential lockdown is rife across China, with those living in the north-eastern parts of the country being urged to stockpile canned foods and antibiotics..
