    Americans and their possession stories

Thriller writer Lynn Hightower wrote an opinion piece for the LA TIMES about possession and how we just can’t get enough of it as people..

It is an interesting article linked here and goes into depth about one particular case that we wrote about many years ago: Latoya Ammons in Gary Indiana.

(WE have also had years of reporting on exorcism related news)

    Hightower writes,

In January of 2014, the Indianapolis Star broke the story of mysterious events that played out in 2011, in Gary, Ind. Latoya Ammons; her mother, Rosa Campbell; her daughter and two sons moved into a rental house and within a month trouble started — swarms of black flies, a shadowy man in the living room, footsteps climbing the stairs when no one was there.

Ammons’ 12-year-old daughter reported feeling held down and choked. She heard voices saying that her family would die. Ammons’ youngest son was propelled out of the bathroom as if he’d been thrown; he growled and thrashed.

Ammons could find no help. When one episode sent the family to the ER, the Department of Child Services was called. The children were found to be healthy; a hospital psychiatrist determined Ammons to be of “sound mind.” But a Department of Child Services caseworker and a hospital nurse reported that Ammons’ 9-year-son walked backward up the wall in a hospital exam room. The caseworker told the police that she believed there could be an “evil influence” affecting the family.

Ultimately, Latoya Ammons would lose custody of her children for six months. But once the Rev. Michael Maginot, a Catholic priest, performed three exorcisms for the family, the events stopped.

The exorcists are the skeptics now. Baffled and frustrated psychiatrists have turned to exorcists seeking help for patients whose torment does not follow the path of schizophrenia or delusional disassociation and does not respond to treatment.

    Highway concludes,

Joseph Laycock, an assistant professor of religious studies at Texas State University, who has taught courses on demonology agrees. He makes the point that an uptick in exorcism could be cyclical, due to social upheaval and uncertainty. A belief in demonic manipulation and exorcism, Laycock has written, offers a way of “interpreting contemporary political issues,” of “framing changing social mores.”

As we suffer through war, disease and division, the spiritual may help when rationality and science do not. I’ve listened to those who feel they have been under demonic attack; their explanation for why they sought out the age-old practice of exorcism is simple: They were desperate for a way to heal.

Modern spiritual war: Priest claims evil demons have figured out how to send threatening text messages

Stephen Rossetti – a licensed psychologist and counsellor – said they do it to taunt their victims, their families and any priests trying to save them.

The clergyman said: “We have had three cases in which demons have texted the team and or the family of the possessed person.

“Two of these cases were the most difficult cases we have had so far, and the third involved a pious family with priestly and religious vocations among the children.

“So, all were ‘high value’ targets with high-ranking, powerful demons involved.

    IDAHO HELL? EXORCISM SURGE?

IDAHO: NEW CONSTRUCTION. NEW JOBS. RENEWED CALLS FOR EXORCISM

There is a boom in calls for exorcisms in Idaho, apparently..
This report from KIVI-TV reporter Roland Beres, an ABC affiliate in the state:

BOISE, Idaho – As Idaho’s population grows, there has been an influx of new construction, new restaurants, and oddly enough, and increased amount calls for exorcisms.

“Many times we get calls because people are having activity in their homes or businesses,“ exorcism expert and founder of Apparitions Paranormal Investigations Jeff Mason explained. “We actually had the entity identify itself as a demon attached to a resident of one exorcism.”

Despite the doubt and sometimes laughable portrayals of exorcisms in Hollywood movies, Pastor Mike Freeman said that the issue is a reality for some people – especially those living in Third World countries.

“You step into the Third World and it’s definitely a ‘We’re not in Kansas’ anymore moment,” Freeman explained.

“To assume our way of viewing reality as the only way is to limit ourselves.“

There is an inundation of talk about exorcisms as of late throughout the world. Creepy stories of demon possession, house possession, and Pope Francis calling on more priests to battle evil.

And now it has moved to Idaho…

Why in hell are exorcisms still so popular? Joseph Laycock from Texas State University explains :

And a part of the explanation written:

So why has exorcism made a comeback? It may be that belief in the demonic is cyclical.
Historian of religion David Frankfurter notes that conspiracy theories involving evil entities like demons and witches tend to flare up when local religious communities are confronted with outside forces such as globalization and modernity.
Attributing misfortune and social change to hidden evil forces, Frankfurter suggests, is a natural human reaction; the demonic provides a context that can make sense of unfamiliar or complex problems.”

    The golden age!
When exorcisms take place outside Starbucks and the Pope lays hands on people to rid them of demons.. The golden age indeed.

The paranormal’s golden age is potentially here as well. When mainstream news focuses like a laser beam on devilish subject matter and strange lights in the sky.
It’s a good time to be alive. And if you believe exorcisms are the true manifestation of evil, then to appears to be a prime time to be a demonic entity.

The rise of Satan in the UK? Or the Satanic Panic comeback?

History repeats itself. Is it now?
This article appearing in RUSSIA TODAY and quoted throughout the world reminds me of the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.. Headline: WITCHCRAFT AND EXORCISM ABUSE RISING IN THE UK..

They attribute their findings to the police.

The source of information is a watchdog group called Project Violet, a group of Metropolitan Police attempting to stop faith-based abuse..

    RT writes,

The UK is experiencing an alarming rise in children suffering from accusations of witchcraft and exorcism, which are being reported to the police. A watchdog says there has been “a significant increase” with 60 cases reported so far in 2015.

One incident saw a young boy’s parents throwing him out of their home because they believed he was a “devil child,” while another child had his face bitten by his mother, who believed he was a “witch possessed by evil spirits.”

The claims were made by Project Violet, which is trying to stop faith-based abuse. The operation is being run by London’s Metropolitan Police. They say that 60 cases have already been recorded so far this year and is part of a worrying trend, which has seen a rapid rise in the number of cases that have been reported.

    And this..

Another high-profile case of abuse linked to religious ritual involved the murder of Kristy Bamu, who was savagely beaten by his sister’s partner, Eric Bikubi, in 2010. Bamu, who was 15 at the time, was accused by Bikubi of being possessed by“evil spirits,” and subsequently hit with hammers, floor tiles and broken glass, before being drowned in a bathtub.

    And finally,

The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) urged Britain to do more to stop this brutal form of people trafficking.

Let me say this, first: People who believe in the paranormal or strange will get a fair shake from the HORROR REPORT. We wonder and ponder the same subject matter as well.. we don’t judge because, as said many times over, the paranormal seems unlikely until it happens to you.

But we also like to deal with facts.

So do the facts back up the hype over exorcisms and satanic ritual abuse? Do the numbers tell the same story that media attention creates?

Here is a good story about the Satanic Panic of the 80s.

We need to be watchful that we aren’t falling victim to over-hyped numbers that add up to less than  a drop in the bucket.

All the while recognize the moments and actual events that need attention. In the 80s, the hype was overdone. But the media ignored the Franklin Credit Union cover up.

Now? In the UK? are the numbers overdone to ignore the Royal Family sex abuse allegations?

The paranormal getting normal: Class of 170 joins up in Rome to fight the Devil

Since Cardinal Bergoglio assumed the title of Pope Francis, a global exorcism frenzy has seemingly resulted. Some even claimed that Pope Francis himself, when greeting people in Rome, performed an exorcism himself…

Francis is being credited (or blamed) with bringing the ancient Rite back to the modern church and making it pop cultural popular..

New reports from Italy have gone further.. 170 people, students of the paranormal in a sense, have joined up to learn all things satanic..  The Vatican Congregation of Clergy organized by the Sacredos Institute are offering a week long class on exorcism and liberation. Demon fighting..

Father Pedro Barrajon, the organizer of the program, said that the awareness and popularity of the course is evidence of the evil in the world..

Recently another high profile Vatican exorcist, Fatger Gabriele Amorth, said that ISIS itself is proof of satan and that ISIS is, well, SATAN..

With all of the news articles recently propelling exorcisms to the forefront of media, some are poo pooing the idea of a paranormal evil entity active in our world. Some, as atheism and non dogmatic belief systems rise, are against the notion of satan. Even some non denominational religious believers would argue against Pope Francis’ attitude towards ‘evil’ in the world..

Today the exorcism article is making the rounds online. Drudge picked it up and put above the proverbial fold..
