Though considered milder than other coronavirus variants, omicron has infected so many people that it has driven the number of daily deaths beyond where it was last spring, before vaccines were widely available, according to Washington Post data.

Omicron has been particularly lethal to people over 75, the unvaccinated and the medically vulnerable, according to doctors and public health officials. The soaring death toll also illustrates why experts pleaded with the public to beware of the highly contagious variant even though it is less virulent than others.

“That feels quite jarring to people who may have assumed omicron is generally on a per-case level less severe and given the fact we have vaccinated at least some portion of the country,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “Even if on a per-case basis fewer people develop severe illness and die, when you apply a small percentage to a very large number, you get a substantial number.”

Francis Collins, retiring from the NIH, warns of his COVID fears in the coming weeks..

As the omicron variant threatens record-breaking rates of infections in the U.S., Collins departs with a fear. If Americans don’t take COVID-19 seriously, the country could see 1 million daily infections, he said.

“We cannot afford to let down our guard,” Collins told NPR’s Scott Detrow in an interview with Weekend Edition.

“I know people are tired of this,” he said, acknowledging Americans’ fatigue of having weathered almost three pandemic-stunted years. “I’m tired of it too, believe me. But the virus is not tired of us. It’s having a great old time changing its shape every couple of months, coming up with new variants and figuring out ways to be even more contagious.”

While his number may sound dramatic, there are others in medical circles who actually believe the REAL daily infection number will be between 3 and 8 million by some point in the next several weeks.

South Africa hopes it is peaking now.. Europe is two weeks behind.. and the United States will be mid-January for the peak.

There are now talks in various governmental circles as to how to respond: Flatten the curve 2.0 and extend the lifetime of omicron longer? Or … let it be?

Humanity faces an uncertain dark winter..

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the UK must take “targeted and proportionate measures now” amid concerns over the new Omicron Covid-19 variant.

“I must stress this: As always, with a new variant, there are many things we just cannot know at this early stage. Our scientists are learning more hour by hour. It does appear that Omicron spreads very rapidly and can be spread between people who are double vaccinated. There is also a very extensive mutation, which means it diverges quite significantly from previous configurations of the virus, and as a result, it might at least in part reduce the protection of our vaccines over time,” Johnson said in a press conference.

Two cases of the variant have been detected in the UK so far.

    Johnson also announced additional measures:

“We’re not going to stop people traveling. But we will require anyone who enters the UK to take a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and to self-isolate until they have a negative result,” Johnson said. “…In addition to the measures we’re already taking to locate those who have been in countries of concern over the last 10 days, we will require all contacts of those who test positive with a suspected case of Omicron to self-isolate for 10 days regardless of your vaccination status.”

The prime minister said his country will also “boost the booster campaign” in an effort to get as many people possible their vaccine booster shot.
