The Duffers appear to be happy sad and Confused

Last night the Duffer Brothers appeared at a live Happy Sad Confused podcast event in Los Angeles and for a fandom already hanging on every rumor surrounding Stranger Things 5 and the so called “Conformity Gate” theories, the event immediately became dissected online in real time. Livestreams  started popping up before audience members were politely asked to stop recording because the discussion was being taped officially for a future podcast release. But by then the attendees had already started taking notes…

According to attendees, the Duffer Brothers touched on everything from Vecna inspirations to the emotional ending of the series, awkward moments involving Noah Schnapp discussions, Season 2 regrets, the future animated series, music licensing nightmares involving Prince, The Beatles and Michael Jackson, and even strange behind the scenes stories including Joe Keery allegedly officiating a wedding in a Scoops Ahoy costume.

One thing that immediately stood out from fan reactions online was the feeling that the Duffers seemed surprised some viewers believe Eleven is dead. That alone is probably going to launch another avalanche of theories. At the same time, when “Conformity Gate” was brought up, the brothers reportedly didn’t really engage the theory directly but instead appreciated how closely fans pay attention to the details in their work.

That answer probably won’t satisfy people who spent months turning Stranger Things into a forensic investigation.

Some of the bigger revelations or talking points from attendees included the Duffer Brothers admitting they would redo the controversial Season 2 Episode 7 if given the chance. They reportedly clarified that the episode was never intended as a spinoff setup and said they simply wanted to take a big creative swing instead of remaking Season 1 over and over again. They also admitted that ending production on the final season was emotional and that filming the final scene deeply affected them, especially watching Finn Wolfhard perform it in what was allegedly one take while the rest of the cast watched emotionally from behind the cameras.

Fans online also became hyper focused on comments involving Noah Schnapp and Will Byers. According to audience notes, the Duffers discussed spending a lot of time with Noah during production, mentioned how many questions he asks, and referenced incidents where he allegedly scared production crews by climbing onto things or nearly hurting himself during filming. Some fans interpreted parts of the conversation as awkward or tense while others thought it was simply the brothers joking around in a blunt way that didn’t necessarily land with everybody.
Another interesting point involved Will Byers’ story arc.

The Duffers reportedly said that at one point a new love interest for Will may have been discussed, but ultimately they decided his journey was more internal and personal instead of being driven by another outside character.

Byler was never in the cards..

The brothers reportedly talked about the challenge of securing music rights for the series and mentioned artists like Prince, The Beatles and Michael Jackson as some of the hardest names to clear. There were also discussions involving why “Purple Rain” was chosen creatively, although some attendees admitted they missed portions of the explanation while trying to take notes quickly.

Meanwhile the future of the Stranger Things universe was also teased. The animated series appears to be moving forward and was reportedly described as already greenlit for another season. Questions about the live action spinoff were handled far more cautiously with the brothers refusing to reveal much other than saying they do not want to rush it and that it has to be “awesome or forget it.”

And perhaps the most fascinating thing about the entire event was not necessarily what was said… but how people reacted afterward.

The Duffer brothers gave us excitement for the past decade and over the past 5 months have become very divisive in the entertainment world. The divisiveness is clearly on display even after the event last night, it doesn’t seem so much damage control was being done but instead the duffers were just being themselves. And that can be appreciated, but the fandom being themselves didn’t seem to appreciate it that much.

In the end this was just a show but as many shows go for so many people it was more than a show and characters that we got to know as though they were real and we had hopes and aspirations for those characters that many times were deflated. But the biggest deflation of all probably came after the show was done when people point it out all of the plot holes and themes such as time travel never really explored.

The appearance on this podcast probably will not do much to assuage fans who are upset.

  • Some type of very bad trailer just happened

Some type of very bad trailer just happened

The Duffer Brothers, fresh from quickly walking away from Stranger Things and whatever that last season was, is moving on to more bad things..

The trailer for SOMETHING VERY BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN is now out..

Created by Haley Z. Boston (Brand New Cherry Flavor, Baby Reindeer), executive produced Matt and Ross Duffer and directed and executive produced by Weronika Tofilska (Baby Reindeer), Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen takes place in the week leading up to a doomed wedding, following the bride and groom. A fuller synopsis reads:

“If CARRIE is horror’s version of a girl becoming a woman, and ROSEMARY’S BABY is the horrific version of a woman becoming a mother, SOMETHING VERY BAD IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN is horror’s take on a woman becoming a wife. Rachel [Morrone] is getting married in five days. Together with her fiancé, Nicky [DiMarco], she embarks on a road trip to his family’s vacation home, secluded in a snowy forest, for the intimate wedding ceremony of their dreams. Which really would be so lovely, except…prone to superstition and paranoia, Rachel can’t shake the relentless feeling that something bad is going to happen. Her foreboding doubts, coupled with a series of eerie coincidences and dreadful surprises, force her to ask the question: What makes two people soulmates? And worse—what could be scarier than lifelong commitment to the wrong person?”

That seems to be a very long synopsis that we had to read a few times to really take in.

But at this point the ultimate viewer reaction to the trailer has been criticism of how DARK the screen was during the entire thing, joking about the camera quality and the Netflix attempt to see how dark peoples’ screens will be during the trailer..

Something, indeed, is going to be bad. Hopefully not this limited series…

Duffer Brothers Stranger Things length buzzkill

On his Instagram stories, Ross Duffer has now debunked the Stranger Things season 5 runtimes by saying

“lol not even close to accurate” underneath the list of rumored episode lengths…

    So…

They are LONGER THAN WHAT WAS REPORTED!?!?!?

  • The Duffer Brothers reveal: OLDER THINGS..

The Duffer Brothers reveal: OLDER THINGS..

At a Netflix presentation of the streaming giant’s 2025 slate for press on Wednesday, “Stranger Things” creators Ross and Matt Duffer revealed that in 2026 they will be executive producing two new shows, titled “The Boroughs” and “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen,” both of which “encompass what we feel is at the core of ‘Stranger Things,’” according to Ross Duffer – “they’re stories about ordinary people who encounter the extraordinary.”

Matt Duffer added that “The Boroughs” “probably shares the most DNA with ‘Stranger Things’ because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil.”

“Only unlike ‘Stranger Things,’ it’s set in a retirement community, so that’s something different,” he quipped. “This time our misfits are a little on the older side. They ride golf carts, not bikes,” he said, in reference to the young characters in “Stranger Things” who ride their bicycles around Hawkins, Indiana.

With how long we have waited for season 5 of STRANGER THINGS, the Duffers may as well just use the current cast!

  • DUFFER BROTHERS GO UPSIDE DOWN

    DUFFER BROTHERS GO UPSIDE DOWN

Season 4 of Stranger Things was the biggest yet.. Season 5 promises to break more records (though maybe it will be shorter) ..

    So what is next?

DEADLINE reporting in an exclusive that the Duffer Brothers have recommitted to Netflix, and also began work on the real UPSIDE DOWN..

    From their report:

Following the record-breaking release of the two final episodes of Stranger Things’ Season 4, creators Matt & Ross Duffer have formed Upside Down Pictures and recommitted to Netflix with several new projects.

To run Upside Down, they’ve hired Hilary Leavitt, a vet of BBC America and MRC who most recently ran her own Hulu-based Blazer banner. Series she helped develop include Orphan Black, Ozark, The Great and Shining Girls.

    MORE..

The brothers said the new company will be guided by the goal to create the kind of stories that inspired them growing up, “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

Suffer the Duffers: They confirm a major death

    Spoiler ahead..

For those who are hoping for a second triumphant return of papa in Stranger Things season five, your hopes have been dashed. He now joins the ranks of the beloved dead from the epic Netflix hit.

Stranger Things creators have confirmed a major death for one of Season 4’s characters.

In an interview with Josh Horowitz, the Duffer Brothers confirmed that Dr Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) has “definitively” died “for real this time”. In season 1, he was thought to be dead but the new episodes revealed that he somehow survived.

They also seem to confirm that Mad Max is alive but not well.

    Papa had a good run.

We loved the MK Uktra vibe his character had and exuded .

    May Papa Rest In Peace.

  • Strangest things: Duffers plan spinoffs

    Strangest things: Duffers plan spinoffs

We all knew this was coming–and many of us hoped it would be.

Spinoffs of the popular Netflix hit Stranger Things.. With Season 4 winding down we all know the fifth and final is coming (coming soon is another question, they don’t start filming until next year according to David Harbour) ..

    DEADLINE reporting:

Creators and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer:  “There’s a version of it developing in parallel [to season 5], but they would never shoot it parallel,” Ross reportedly said. “I think actually we’re going to start delving into that soon as we’re winding down and finishing these visual effects, Matt and I are going to start getting into it.”

Matt added,  “The reason we haven’t done anything is just because you don’t want to be doing it for the wrong reasons, and it was just like, ‘Is this something I would want to make regardless of it being related to Stranger Things or not?’ And definitely. Even if we took the Stranger Things title off of it, I’m so, so excited about it. But it is not… It’s going to be different than what anyone is expecting, including Netflix.”

Netflix at this point may not care what the storylines will be, just that they work! The streaming service is bleeding money and also laying off people. Heading into a recession, they are looking for hope. Perhaps a future of Duffer Stranger spinoffs is the best hope they’ve got.

It is fair to say–at least this is how we think–that without Stranger Things season 1, Netflix may have struggled a lot sooner than they did.
