Verizon owned TUMBLR bans porn! And its user base leaves in droves

Tumblr announced this week it will ban content featuring nudity from its platform, starting December 17.

The decision was met with lots of backlash from users who view the site as a safe space to explore their identity and sexuality through not safe for work (NSFW) content.
Many Tumblr users have said they plan to abandon the platform for alternative blogging websites that allow explicit content..

Tumblr says it’s banning “adult content” from its platform in order to make “a better, more positive” place, but the policy change has some users abandoning the site.

The new policy goes into effect December 17, and will result in the deletion of any content portraying “real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples,” Tumblr, a Verizon-owned company, said in its announcement.

Reaction to Tumblr’s announcement has been swift and critical across social media. More than 423,000 people have already signed a Change.org petition to “make Tumblr rescind their adult content ban.”

This move comes after years of debate of whether Tumblr porn was free  expression and art, or porn. Creator David Karp didn’t touch the subject.. When the company sold to Yahoo, people began to get worried..
Corporate drama weighed heavily into this event..

Tumblr says that child pornography was the reason for its app’s sudden disappearance from the iOS App Store. The app has been missing from the store since November 16th, but until now the reason for its absence was unclear — initially Tumblr simply said it was “working to resolve the issue with the iOS app.” However, after Download.com approached Tumblr with sources claiming that the reason was related to the discovery of child pornography on the service, the Yahoo-owned social media network issued a new statement confirming the matter.

And now, with Tumblr acting like the Porn Stealing Grinch before Christmas for users, some are wondering if the website–around more than ten years–is going to be hit with the same fate as another former amazing site for creativity: LIVE JOURNAL.

But if TUMBLR goes, users are going to take it down in the same fashion they used it in: With perceptive and incredible memes with social commentary:

  • Karp dart! Tumblr vanishes from the App Store!

Karp dart! Tumblr vanishes from the App Store!

    The socials are broke !

    Tears are flowing!

David Karp’s Yahoo’s Tumblr’s app has vanished from the App Store.. And users took notice..

On Tuesday, Tumblr wrote on its own Twitter account: “Some people have had issues with the iOS app logging them out. We’re working on it and will update when we have more information.”

Source the Business Insider confirmed with Tumblr that the disappearance of the app is linked to the update, meaning Tumblr’s Android app is unaffected..
But what else could it be? Perhaps a hack that took millions of users’ passwords? Passwords that are now being sold on the dark web?

Could it be a secret security update?

And if you think the fine folks of Yahoo! or boy genius Karp would tell us, consider recent history: the big back we know of today took place years ago in ’13.

Waiting for Tumblr. Will the app return?

And will users, with the recent spate of affairs, move on?

    MAYER SLAYERS COMING!?

News from inside the world of Yahoo!.. the exclamation point may soon get bigger over the tenure of Tumblr Gobbler Melissa Mayer..

There are troubles in the boardroom–troubles that may portend the end for the acting Mayer..

    More:

There have been a number of business decisions, investments, and acquisitions being questioned as of late.. in a very public way.. Questions that showcase risky movies that the board may deem as too much..

The main question: The purchase plan of Alibaba..

    From the BUSINESS INSIDER:

As it currently stands, no indications from Yahoo have suggested the company is re-thinking its Alibaba spin-off plan.

One Yahoo investor told us that the board and Yahoo’s management team appears not to be thinking about this as owners of the company — and therefore stewards of shareholder capital — but as a management team that simply wants to keep itself in place.

In other words, this investor sees Yahoo’s board in something resembling self-preservation mode rather than acting in the best interests of the company over the long term.

Mayer is also facing the consequences of her own rule.. The company is   in no better shape now financially than it was before she took over. The acquisition of Tumblr seemed strange at the time it occurred and now even more so.. remember the amount of people who flocked off of the social network then?

As I said then, I will say again. The fact Yahoo! buys something is a virtual online death sentence .. eventually. And just because so many people use Tumblr? Doesn’t mean much. Lots of people used and loved Geocities too.. Nothing is forever. With Marissa Mayer, less things are forever faster..

    Time is ticking.
    The boardroom is waiting.
Will bedlam hit the board? Or will Mayer live to slay another day?

YouTube Will Completely Remove Videos Of Creators Who Don’t Sign Its Red Subscription Deal:

    Josh Constine on TECHDIRT reporting,

YouTube made its top video creators an offer they literally couldn’t refuse, or they’d have their content disappear. Today YouTube confirmed that any “partner” creator who earns a cut of ad revenue but doesn’t agree to sign its revenue share deal for its new YouTube Red $9.99 ad-free subscription will have their videos hidden from public view on both the ad-supported and ad-free tiers. That includes videos by popular comedians, musicians, game commentators, and DIY instructors, though not the average person that uploads clips.

It’s a tough pill to swallow that makes YouTube look like a bully. Though turning existing fans into paid subscribers instead of free viewers could earn creators more than the ad revenue, forcing them into the deal seems heavy-handed.

    Reaction is mixed.
    Google is being slammed.

    But the money is good.

    POPE TUMOR RUMORS SURFACE

Days ago, there were global rumors reported in a number of papers that Pope Francis was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor by a Japanese doctor..

The story got lots of play in both religious based and non religious fishwrappers. Even the Drudge Report picked up the scoop and ran with it, giving it a headline for more than 24 hours on the page.

And now after the tumor turmoil, the Vatican has clearly denied the story..

“I fully confirm my previous statement, having verified the facts with the appropriate sources, including the Holy Father,” said Father Federico Lombardi, director of the press office. “No Japanese doctor has visited the Pope in the Vatican and there have been no examinations of the type indicated in the article.”

This, however, is where the intrigue pops in.

    According to reporting on CatholicCulture.org,

In a related development, Dr. Fukushima removed from his own personal web site photos of visits to the Vatican in October 2014 and January 2015. The web site had shown photos of a meeting between the doctor and Pope Francis; those photos appeared to have been retouched. Dr. Fukushima has said that he only met the Pontiff briefly, in the course of a public audience, and never for a medical consultation or treatment.

    Pure coincidence. I am sure….?

One of my biggest problems with TUMBLR has always been its reblogging feature. While I rarely reblog, the times I do, I get as confused about what I am seeing as my readers may be seeing..

But TUMBLR is going to spice things up.. it’s been redesigned.

    But is it better?

One person’s tweet, quoted in the FORTUNE article, says this:

the new tumblr reblog design is, EVEN BY TUMBLR REDESIGN STANDARDS, an abomination

Strong fighting words for Marissa Mayer.

Some are already lamenting about the ‘nostalgic charm’ that will be missed with the redesign..

This is what greeted me today *(and others)* when I logged into TUMBLR today to update COAL SPEAKER..

What am I afraid of, the POLTERGEIST Tumblr account wants to know?
    That’s easy.

I am afraid of product placement, the ability social networking and corporate sponsorship to merge together thanks to the YAHOO! acquisition of TUMBLR.

Oh, and one more thing: I am afraid of bad remakes of classic movies.

And I was also sort of afraid of the priest from POLTERGEIST 2, but I will wait until the sequel TUMBLR account asks me what I am afraid of in two years to relay more information about that.
