Phoenix Arizona: 18 Days of Extreme Heat With No End in Sight

Oppressive is not the word for this. Phoenix is just one of the many locations globally right now dealing with terrible heat and extreme summer conditions.

I’m sure there’s many places around the globe that are enjoying beautiful sunny beach weather but for the most part, it seems like everyone’s pretty miserable with the summer of 2023

The temperatures are “very extreme,” said Matt Salerno, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix. “We’re talking 10 degrees above where they normally are.” The city set another heat record on Monday: eight consecutive days in which the overnight temperature never dipped below 90 degrees.

The heat is particularly brutal and inescapable at the sprawling homeless encampment in central Phoenix known as “The Zone.”

There are barely any trees and, this July, people have been suffering second-degree burns after they pass out or fall asleep on the hot asphalt and sidewalks.

There are few sources of running water other than donated bottles and portable wash stations. So a spigot outside a shelter often has a line of people pouring water over their heads and filling up five-gallons jugs to take back to their tents.

FLYING FOXES MELTING IN HEAT WAVE!!

Thousands of flying foxes died in an Australian heatwave so severe it has melted tarmac.

The animals fell from the trees as they were boiled alive in temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Campbelltown in New South Wales.

Animal welfare volunteers battled to save the lives of the hundreds of babies and some adults in distress but the death toll is believed to be in the thousands.

A spokesman from the charity Help Save the Wildlife and Bushlands in Campbelltown said: “The efforts of our volunteers yesterday was both heroic and heartbreaking.”

SUMMER OF 16: VIOLENCE PERVADES THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE

Something seems very wrong.. Very very wrong..

Life of late has been filled with horrid headlines–things of a tragic nature. Hardcore drugs.. hardcore murders.. a lack of concern from some in the public and a turning inward of others..

Has the American culture finally come to its knees in fear? Have all the good people given up, locked their doors, and shielded their last remaining vestige of safety somewhere deep in a homemade bunker?

HEADLINE FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS: US CITIES SEE UNEXPLAINED RISE IN VIOLENT CRIMES THIS YEAR

The meat of the story written by LISA MARIE PANE AND DON BABWIN..

Violent crimes – from homicides and rapes to robberies – have been on the rise in many major U.S. cities, yet experts can’t point to a single reason why and the jump isn’t enough to suggest there’s a trend.

“It’s being reported on at local levels, but in my view, it’s not getting the attention at the national level it deserves,” FBI Director James Comey said recently. “I don’t know what the answer is, but holy cow, do we have a problem.”

The problem is not completely national.. certain cities are not seeing a spike. Others are.. one of those cities: Chicago. The same weekend the world seemed concerned about the gorilla at the Ohio zoo gunned down, so many in Chicago were killed or injured by gunfire, Memorial Day weekend..

More on Chicago:

Perhaps more significant is the number of people who are being shot; well over 1,200 as of Tuesday, which far surpasses the 800 by this time last year.

All of it has left the city on edge.

“Our kids are afraid to go out of the house,” said the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest and activist on the city’s South Side. “You have children asking teachers to pray for them before they go home.”

The AP expands more.. the story will surely be on front pages Monday morning in fishwrapper runs..

But what to make of it? A breakdown of society/ a pattern/ a fluke?

Drugs?
Gangs
….rage..

All the rage in a summer heat..

As so often happens, this reality reminds me of fiction, specifically Frank Miller’s BATMAN.. a scene where the Joker is running wild and the entire city of Gotham is ravaged by a crime wave and a heat wave at the same time. The heat wave finally breaks with a mighty crack of thunder before an eventual fight between Batman and Superman. But the cops in Gotham were waiting for that heat wave to break.. waiting for the crime wave to slow down, too..

In real life, we are waiting for something to break.. for the heat, or whatever is at the root of this issue, to calm down.. be fixed.

But who’s fixing it?

No one I can see..

Batman, sadly, does not exist.

EXTREME HEAT WAVE: ASIA

300 dead in India.. deaths elsewhere.
Heat strokes..
Records broken for highest temperatures for long duration in 65 years…

The heat wave is extreme and seemingly intensely getting worse with each passing day in South Asia.

Hundreds of people have deceased in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and India..

112 degrees in Thailand.
108 degrees Cambodia.
108 in Seno.

Officials are telling people: Stay indoors and drink water. There may be a problem with that, however..

The heat wave is also causing severe drought in the much of India effecting crops and livestock. groundwater reservoirs are at just 22 percent capacity in parts of the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat after rivers, lakes and dams have dried up..

May is traditionally the hottest month of the year in the same parts of the world now getting record heat.
There is a fear that what is being seen may only get worse over the next four weeks..

MORE FROM CNN:

At the Edhi morgue in Karachi, the smell is overwhelming.

At least 650 bodies have been brought here since Saturday. Many lie in storage. But an oppressive heat wave – and the frequent power outages from electricity grids trying to keep up with demand – means the morgue is unable to properly maintain the temperature at the overcrowded facility.

A handwritten sign outside says the morgue is filled to capacity. Other bodies lie outside.

An NBC report says that there are widespread power outages and that people are literally falling to their death on the streets..
