The scene around the United States of America couldn’t be more different than it is when compared to just one Christmas season ago. Last year, snow blanketed vast portions of the nation.. a storm before Christmas whitened the grounds in areas that didn’t have white Christmas in years.
Fast forward, one year later, and 2011 is bone dry. Actually it’s quite wet. But that wetness if green and not white.
A week before Christmas, and not only does most of the U.S. stand to have a wet Christmas with mud on the ground, but the temperatures are warm seemingly from coast to coast.
Detroit baking in the 50s with norms in the 30s.. New York City and Philly are high above freezing.. grounds saturated by flooding rains in the fall are just muddy. Christmas lights high above trees in towns with no scenic snow falling around it.
It could be a mood buster for some, but malls are happy. Not only are people shopping (a little) this year, but there is no need for giant bulldozers to clear parking lots.
Heatmiser, indeed, is in charge.
If not him, it’s La Nina, the cooling of the Pacific Ocean and shifting of jet streams. What was true for winter in 2010-11 will not be true for 11-12. Instead, warm pools of muddy grass will be dominant …
