Dark hallways and the Vatican are filled with the whispers of names who may be the next pope

But do the Cardinals in Rome understand the gravity of the situation given the prophecy of the Popes and what it may foretell for either the church, the world, or both?

There is intrigue in Rome tonight, as the Vatican prepares to say goodbye to a pope who is leaving on his own volition for the first time in hundreds of years–And in the Holy Roman Empire behind closed doors chatter and whispers gather… Who will be that succeeds Pope Benedict?

There is also chatter online tonight, as Horror Report showcased earlier, There is a strange prophecy of the Popes has been around for hundreds of years as well.. I received a number of email questions today regarding this, and tried to explain it in an earlier post today.

Someone pointed out that there is controversy with as to whether or not St. Malachy even wrote the prophecy. Albeit there is controversy about the source of the document, what is amazing is how accurate the prophecy has been when compared to actual events and men who became pontiff.

We will continue to monitor the story, the conclave, the rumors, and the eventual choice. When the black smoke turns white at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, there’ll be a pope and quite possibly the final one if this prophecy holds true.

The prophecy of the popes

A user emailed me asking more on the prophecy of the popes..

Saint Malachy is believed you’ve written it.. Some have said he didn’t and instead the document is a fraud.

The 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia wrote this on Malachy:

The most famous and best known prophecies about the popes are those attributed to St. Malachy. In 1139 he went to Rome to give an account of the affairs of his diocese to the pope, Innocent II, who promised him two palliums for the metropolitan Sees of Armagh and Cashel. While at Rome, he received (according to the Abbé Cucherat) the strange vision of the future wherein was unfolded before his mind the long list of illustrious pontiffs who were to rule the Church until the end of time.

This full prophecy is available here to read.

Malachy (supposedly) wrote this on the next Pope:

In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremêdus judicabit populum suum. Finis.
(In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)

Rumors abound online

‘Something is up’ one comment on the CNN breaking Pope Benedict story read. No pope has quit since the 1400s until now .. And rumors quickly firing up online suggesting there is doubt that the 85-year-old fragile Pope is leaving due to his health.

Sex abuse, one said. Perhaps unflattering news about the treatment the Pope’s butler received in the Vatican jail.

Maybe it was a long line of stories set to be released about church abuse of children?

All these rumors …all these stories.

What is not in doubt: This Pope is advanced in age, and controversial due to his handling as cardinal Raztinger of sexual-abusing-priests.

Also not in doubt: The Vatican is secretive and powerful, with more intrigue and scandal than even the halls of Congress.

But this may not smell to ‘high heaven’ as much as some think.
After all, we have an aging pontiff and a flock of Cardinals vying for power … That could be enough ingredients to force action, force a resignation, and now change the world.

One comment in NBC news’ story:

And the world will never know what corruption this pope hid on his watch. The next pope will do the same — hide money laundering, pedophile priests, slave laundries and who knows what else under the guise of religion.

Many assertions and assumptions are being made about the deeper reasons Benedict is stepping down. All reasons prompted, however, by the actions of the Church over decades.

We are in uncharted territory …the Vatican needs to dust off the rule book from 1400 now..

Of Popes and power

The last Pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. And he didn’t Tweet.

That’s a long time ago.. It’s also very debatable in Catholicism whether a Pope should actually be able to quit.. This papal resignation comes right before the Lenten and Easter season in the Church..

There are some perhaps shocked by this morning’s news. But no doubt the power brokers in the ‘holy’ rooms of Rome were ready. And with this resignation a chance now to rule the Church. They will gather…the white smoke will billow. There may already be a Pope chosen secretly by the Cardinals, who maybe knew this quit would come…

Pope resigning February 28; No reason given at this point

This is how NBC news is reporting this early Monday breaking story:

By Claudio Lavanga and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News
ROME — Pope Benedict XVI is to resign on February 28, the Vatican said Monday.
The Pope made a statement in Latin during a small canonization event saying he doesn’t have the strength anymore.

The conclave will now be forced to pick a new pope earlier than some thought..

There were rumors over the past year that this very event could occur. And now it is.

Benedict leaving the papacy…

Replaced by…?
Petrus Romanus?
Peter the Roman?
Is this the end??
Will the next Pope tweet?!

We will see just how true the prophecy of the Popes by St Malachi was very shortly..
