    THE NOT-SO-KNOWN HISTORY OF BARBIE

The proto-Barbie was just shy of a foot tall, with bulging breasts and a platinum-blonde ponytail, made up for a night on the town with red puckered lips and blue eye shadow. Although Barbie’s curvy proportions are modeled after Lilli’s, the German doll’s heavy makeup and suggestively arched eyebrows didn’t carry over to the American version. The dolls also have tellingly different feet, according to M.G. Lord, the author of Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll.
In the comics, Lilli was witty, irreverent and sexually uninhibited. One strip, summarized by Lord, shows Lilli covering her naked body with a newspaper and explaining to a friend, “We had a fight and he took back all the presents he gave me.” Another shows Lilli in a bikini; when a policeman tells her that two-piece swimsuits are illegal, she says, “Oh, and in your opinion, which part should I take off?”
Nonetheless, Lilli dolls were soon coveted by children as well as adults. They caught the eye of 15-year-old Barbara Handler on a 1956 vacation in Switzerland with her mother, Ruth — a co-founder of the Mattel toy company.
  • A tiny piece of clay discovered may prove one portion of the Bible

A tiny piece of clay discovered may prove one portion of the Bible

Last week, Israeli archaeologists in Jerusalem announced that they had discovered a 2,700 year old clay seal impression that, in their estimation, once belonged to the governor of Jerusalem.

The excavator Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah said that the discovery “supports the Biblical rendering of the existence of a governor of the city in Jerusalem 2,700 years ago.”

This would make the seal impression significant in two ways: it would provide archaeological evidence that there was an Israelite administrative presence in the land roughly three millennia ago and it would confirm that the administrative structures described in the Bible actually existed.

The coin-sized impression is inscribed in Hebrew and reads “belonging to the governor of the city.” It also shows two standing figures who face one another and wear striped, knee-length garments. The Israel Antiquities Authority said that the seal was probably either a souvenir sent on behalf of the governor or originally attached to “an important transport” of some kind.

Roads are melting in the land down under!

Emergency services in southeast Australia are warning people to stay indoors as a dangerous heatwave batters the country, with temperatures so high that the asphalt on some roads has been melting.

The “catastrophic” hot weather caused a 10km stretch of the Hume Highway, near the Victoria state capital Melbourne, to become soft and sticky, causing havoc for motorists trying to enter the city.

Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania have now declared a total fire ban after blazes on the outskirts of Melbourne raged out of control, destroying buildings and threatening lives.

The other Trump: Tiff says dad likes Mickey D’s in bed

The bombshell Wolff Michael book claimed, among many other things, that President Trump’s view of a great night is McDonalds cheeseburgers in bed while watching three TV sets of news coverage. . .

That now is being confirmed by the daughter we never hear about: Tiffany Trump!

In Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Mr Wolff claims most days the US president prefers to be in bed by 6.30pm watching his three TV sets while eating a cheeseburger and speaking to confidants and friends on the phone.

When pressed about Mr Trump’s penchant for McDonald’s by TMZ, she said: “That’s what he does, he loves McDonald’s”.

“Does he eat it every night in bed?” the publication asked.

    Tiffany responded: “He wishes, right”.

    FIRE AND FURY!
    Guts and glory.
  • Trump Tannem

    Trump Tannem

It has been another wild week of politics. Thanks to the President. And Twitter. And Wolfe’s book…

    But some interesting history..

Did you ever notice the similarities between Biff Tannen and Donald Trump? It’s not just you.

In 2015, back when most laughed at the prospects that Trump would ever become president, the writer of the movie opened up about who he based Bif off of: Trump!

    He told the DAILY BEAST

“We thought about it when we made the movie! Are you kidding?” he says. “You watch Part II again and there’s a scene where Marty confronts Biff in his office and there’s a huge portrait of Biff on the wall behind Biff, and there’s one moment where Biff kind of stands up and he takes exactly the same pose as the portrait? Yeah.”
Of course, in the movie, Biff uses the profits from his 27-story casino (the Trump Plaza Hotel, completed in 1984, is 37 floors, by the way) to help shake up the Republican Party, before eventually assuming political power himself, helping transform Hill Valley, California, into a lawless, dystopian wasteland, where hooliganism reigns, dissent is quashed, and wherein Biff encourages every citizen to call him “America’s greatest living folk hero.”
“Yeah,” says Gale. “That’s what we were thinking about.”

  • Flu in California turning very deadly very fast

Flu in California turning very deadly very fast

This year’s flu season appears unusually harsh.. Some speculate that it seems such only because it is peaking early..

    FROM THE LA TIMES:

The flu season is typically worst around February, but can reach its height anytime from October to April. Though influenza had only only killed three Californians at this time last year, it had taken 68 lives by the end of February, according to state data.
Many California doctors, however, contend that the recent surge has been unusually severe.
“Rates of influenza are even exceeding last year, and last year was one of the worst flu seasons in the last decade,” said Dr. Randy Bergen, clinical lead of the flu vaccine program for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.
