Residents describe chaotic scenes after Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes, erupted and caused hundreds of earthquakes in Congo.
Thousands have fled the city of Goma in eastern Congo after a volcano erupted and hundreds of earthquakes followed. These are the apocalyptic scenes on the ground as officials say more eruptions and earthquakes are possible.
Mount Nyiragongo was erupting, for the second time in less than 20 years, and was about to lay waste to one of the poorest and most vulnerable places on earth – a region with few roads and limited infrastructure, and a decades-long conflict that has displaced millions and is monitored by one of the largest U.N. peacekeeping operations in the world.
