Of toys and tribulations; predictions for the HE-MAN toy line and movie profitability

Before the new Masters of the Universe movie even arrives in theaters, one of the biggest questions surrounding the entire project may not actually be about the movie itself. It may be about toys… and whether kids even want them anymore in the modern era.

For years now, it feels like adult collectors have completely changed the toy industry. Every time a major toy line comes out, shelves are emptied by collectors, resale prices are inflated online, and the toys themselves become collectibles instead of actual toys for children. It has happened with Star Wars, Transformers, GI Joe, wrestling figures, retro reissues, and countless others. Parents sometimes walk into stores only to discover the shelves already raided by adults hunting rare variants and exclusives before kids even had a chance to see them.

That is what makes the current strategy from Mattel so interesting. It appears a conscious effort is being made to divide the line between collector products and kid-focused products. The larger premium collectibles and nostalgia-driven exclusives are still being made for longtime fans, while more affordable figures in the lower price ranges are reportedly being aimed directly at children and families. In a strange way, a moral position almost seems to be getting taken here… toys should still belong to kids.
That approach may end up being one of the smartest things Mattel has done with Masters of the Universe in decades.

But the larger mystery remains the same… will modern kids even embrace He-Man?

That question becomes more complicated when it is remembered that younger audiences today have grown up in a completely different entertainment landscape than children from the 1980s. The imagination-driven era of after-school cartoons, toy aisles filled wall-to-wall with action figures, and playground mythology has largely been replaced by TikTok clips, YouTube personalities, anime, streaming services, Roblox, Minecraft, and endless fast-moving digital entertainment.

A child born after 2011, or especially after 2020, may not automatically connect with a giant sword-and-sorcery fantasy mythology the same way older generations once did.

There was a certain imagination attached to the 1980s that still carries enormous nostalgic power. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe existed in a colorful world filled with strange creatures, giant castles, cosmic battles between good and evil, and larger-than-life personalities. The sincerity of it all was part of the appeal. It was not ironic. It was not ashamed of itself. Eternia was simply allowed to be strange.

The concern now is whether that kind of mythology still works in the modern age… or whether its time has long passed.

Reportedly carrying a budget somewhere between $170 million and $200 million, the new film is not being treated like a niche experiment. A massive theatrical rollout is expected, with projections pointing toward a wide release in roughly 3,500 to 4,000 theaters when the film arrives on June 5, 2026. The runtime is also being reported at approximately 132 minutes, making it a fairly lengthy fantasy blockbuster.

But we are already hearing about early pre-sales that are not meeting their target.

That runtime may become part of the problem.
A prediction is going to be made here… the movie will probably have a decent opening weekend fueled by nostalgia, curiosity, and longtime fans, but may ultimately fall flat afterward. Toy sales for the kid-focused line may also end up weaker than expected, while adult collectors will likely scoop up the premium and nostalgia-driven figures almost immediately. Of course, reality may prove this prediction completely wrong, and honestly it would be great if that happened. A genuine new He-Man sensation taking over pop culture again would actually be pretty incredible to witness.

    Still, there is skepticism.

The movie may simply be too long to fully appeal to younger children unless the pacing is nonstop action from beginning to end. But at the same time, constant action for over two hours involving characters that many kids have never seen before could become overwhelming rather than exciting. Modern audiences, especially younger viewers, often need emotional anchors before they become invested in giant fantasy worlds. If there is no attachment to the characters themselves, endless spectacle can start to blur together.

That may be the biggest challenge facing Eternia in 2026.

Adults already care about He-Man. Adults already understand Skeletor, Castle Grayskull, Battle Cat, and the mythology. But the future of the franchise will not really be decided by nostalgia-driven collectors. It will be decided by whether children begin asking for the toys, pretending to be the characters, wearing the shirts, arguing about who is stronger, and carrying Eternia into an entirely new generation.

    That is the real test.

And right now, nobody truly knows whether Masters of the Universe is about to become the next great fantasy revival… or simply another relic of the 1980s trying one last time to survive in a completely different world.

  • The family of He-Man’s creator is looking for help

The family of He-Man’s creator is looking for help

TMZ was the first to report this really tragic news yesterday.

Roger Sweet — the toy designer who created the He-Man character for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in the 1980s — is suffering from dementia, and according to his wife, he’s unable to afford the necessary care.

Marlene Sweet, who has been married to Roger for nearly 40 years, launched a GoFundMe to help with the $10,200-a-month bill for Roger’s memory care facility. According to reports, he took a pretty bad fall at the age of 91, and dementia was already complicating the situation.

Anyone who has been connected to this disease or has seen it in their own family knows the pain, the tribulation, and the long wind of dementia blowing through the minds of people with Alzheimer’s. It’s very unfortunate. Very sad. And in this case, it feels even sadder because of the amount of joy his creation of He-Man brought to a few generations of people.

This is on the Go Fund Me:

My husband, Roger Sweet, is the creator of HE-MAN and MASTERS of the UNIVERSE. He was a toy designer at Mattel for over 15 years. Roger designed and named the original He-Man character, and worked for years with other designers to create all the other characters and playsets that enthralled kids for so many years – and still do today!

Over the years Roger was invited to and attended multiple COMICON conventions. He always loved talking about HE-MAN and MASTERS with all the fans! I was able to accompany him to several, and it was fun to see him interacting with HE-MAN fans.

We have been married for nearly 40 years. When we got married, the designers in the HE-MAN group “built” us a plaster wedding cake, with “HE-MAN TAKES MARLENE FOR HIS BRIDE” written on the side, and HE-MAN dressed for a wedding (with his bride holding all the weapons) for the cake topper! Very clever guys!!!

Roger is now nearly 91 years old and sadly has dementia. His illness has continued to progress, and I have done all I can to take care of his needs at home. He recently went for a walk and returned much later than usual and very tired. I discovered terrible bruising on his side and much disorientation, and when asked what happened he did not recall falling and getting this injury. The doctor sent him to the ER, and after 4 hours of tests they discovered he had two brain bleeds along with the massive bruising on his side. He was admitted to the ICU where he stayed for 3 days, then 4 more days in the main hospital, sleeping most of the time and continuing to be very disoriented, along with refusing to stay put and trying to go walking about. The doctors consider him a high risk for falls and say he must use a walker, considering the dementia and brain bleeds, but he says he does not need it and continues to walk around in his confused state.

They decided he must live in a Memory care facility, where he can be monitored and safe. He is now at our chosen care facility and is settling in. He has only been there a few days and his mental decline is sadly continuing. It is devastating to see this happening. Unfortunately these care facilities are not covered by Medicare, and the cost for a patient in his condition is $10,200 a month, well above our monthly income.

So I am reaching out to all the HE-MAN fans for help with these bills. Any donation will be greatly appreciated and will ease the burden of this new expense.

Sweet’s design work helped shape an entire era of toys and animation that still resonates with fans today.
The He-Man fan base is pretty strong. Perhaps they’ll step up and assist in this case because of the amount of joy this man brought into their lives.

The only thing we can do right now is hope and pray that the family finds some relief — and some peace — during what has to be an incredibly difficult time.

  • June 1990: The Summer of Dick

June 1990: The Summer of Dick

The wonderful NIGHTMARE NOSTALGIA page reminded us that this year, TODAY as a matter of fact, is the 35th anniversary of DICK TRACY being released in theaters…

It was a magical summer for the box office.. June 1990; school was out ‘forever’ and the 1990s just began. While we did not have the luxury or burden based on your point of view of delving deep into the 90s yet, the future was bright we were still wearing shades.

And after several successful summers of box office glory for super heroes, Dick Tracy entered the fray.

Armed with his watch, yellow coat, and crime fighter ability, Warren Beatty donned the famed detective hat and have us, in our opinion, one of the greatest movies of all time. The magic of the film was its creativity, its style, its music, Madonna, but its colorful array of villians.

Back then we didn’t have ROTTEN TOMATOES, but instead we all trusted Siskel and Ebert. Here is what they thought about the movie in June 1990:

The movie was released on June 15, 1990 to great fanfare and buildup in fishwrappers across America. “Dick Tracy” (1990) grossed $103,738,726 domestically, ranking it 9th in worldwide box office for the year. It reached the #1 spot at the domestic box office during the week of June 15-21, 1990

By Christmas kids, including me, were asking for and getting DICK TRACY the NINTENDO game..

Playing with action figures. Except the BLANK. That was purposely sparely placed on store racks giving kids a false hope that one day they would find it.

We were lucky that year to see this movie in a theater for the first time. It created a sense of nostalgia for the oldtimers… and something new for younger people. It even made me read newspapers again! That summer papers across America re-published old Dick Tracy comics and I for one was using my summer time off to cut them out and create a collage. I wish I still had it today.

And we had the summer of Dick at McDonalds.. We were all led to believe we were crimestoppers and could win millions on their scratch offs!

Newspapers at the time even report about the nostalgia that the then released film was bringing back:

But what made that summer EVEN better? It was one of MANY films that came out that we still watch and talk about today.

Just think.. the hot summer 35 years ago were were watching TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, PRETTY WOMAN, and GREMLINS II. I will avoid being joyful about BACK TO THE FUTURE III, that one just didn’t hit great and today still has not caught on.

Yes indeed.. that summer was magical, vibrant.. and gave us Dick Tracy. An underrated classic that we still think holds up even in today’s times..

  • Thundercats and Masters of the Universe get a crossover

Thundercats and Masters of the Universe get a crossover

This is how the public relations announcement spins it:

The collaboration of two iconic 80s brands, Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats, yields an action figure of the Ever-Living Evil of Eternia, Skell-Ra! This toy crosses over Skeletor of MOTU with Mumm-Ra of ThunderCats. He comes with 2 swappable heads, a reversible purple / red cape, and swappable harness and skirt armor pieces, so he can evolve from Skell-Ra into Mumm-Ra. The Sword of Plun-darr completes the double-edged picture. $29.99

You can also go to this website to get a full accounting of the initial figures and their appearances.

There have been Ninja Turtles crossovers with He-Man.. and now this .. each time the price goes up a bit, but Thundercats fans have felt cheated.

Will this bring out the midlife crisis and them next 2?

Judging by how the Masters line has been releasd, this will be coming to a store near you — or maybe won’t.

They are playing on the nostalgia.. Folks, kids won’t buy this. People ages 40 through 50 will. I should know I’ve been buying He-Man feeling like a kid again when I do.

  • The take our money sketchbook series

The take our money sketchbook series

Some might say the Mattel toy company is digging into the archives just to give us what we want. Others might overwhelmingly say, “Enough with the side series—how much more money do you want to take from us?!”

Hordak and Grizzlor from the Masters of the Universe realm are getting their own two-figure release. They don’t resemble the cartoon or the original action figure versions from the 1980s. Instead, they represent the concept art sketches of what they looked like prior to the creation of the action figures or the eventual hit series.

It’s a lot. Many fans are still frustrated that the original Origins re-release never really concluded. Then came the cartoon-style representations of the action figures. And now, in the midst of all this, we’re getting a potential new side story featuring sketchbook-inspired figures.

Don’t get me wrong—if I see them in the wild, I’ll probably pick them up. I might even order them online when they’re available. But it’s becoming overwhelming.

    Ok… when can we buy??

  • The Power of Scalpers beats the Power of Grayskull

The Power of Scalpers beats the Power of Grayskull

It is getting frustrating for a HE-MAN fan to find the new 2020 and 2021 toy lines..

Did Mattel falter in making the action figures?
Did scalpers strike in their finest fashion?

Either way it is clear: You can hardly find HE-MAN toys anywhere!!

There are two schools of thought..
    1) The company just did not make enough. Walmart was alone in selling, and all you can find was He-Man and Skeletor with a random Man-At-Arms thrown in for the mix.. but the rest off the line, regardless of the wave, was hard to find. Impossible in most places.

Facebook pages have popped up informing fans where some of the newer figures and items have been located nationwide.

    2) Scalpers and adult collectors have ruined things for kids.

Yes. Scalpers online have been selling action figures for dozens of dollars above what stores have them for.. And that just plain sucks.

I remember as a kid, with family driving me to the local mall and me being hopeful of finding the newest action figure I wanted. I always lucked out, thankfully.. But if there were new He-Man fans in the younger age bracket trying to find action figures, they are completely out of luck in our modern age.

    You just cannot find them…

    Plain and simple.

And for any newcomer to the fold, that just is terrible. Dreams of new toys are dashed.

Instead you have to go to eBay to find the $80 figure…

    Terrible..terrible…terrible…
