Navy destroyer came close to sinking after a “traumatic” collision off the coast of Japan

     REPORTING FROM THE WASHINGTON POST:

YOKOSUKA, Japan — A U.S. Navy destroyer came close to sinking after a “traumatic” collision off the coast of Japan, the commander of the Seventh Fleet said Sunday, after the bodies of the missing sailors were found in the berthing compartments of the stricken vessel.

Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin declined to say how many of the seven missing sailors had been recovered, because the families of those who died were still being informed on Sunday.

But Aucoin said that the search and rescue mission was over, and The Navy Times reported that the bodies of all seven missing sailors had been found in the ship’s flooded berthing compartments.

Suicide Barriers Going Up At Golden Gate Bridge After Over 1,500 Deaths:

Work officially began Thursday on a net under the Golden Gate Bridge intended to prevent and deter the dozens of suicides that take place at the iconic landmark each year.

More than 1,500 people are thought to have died there over the bridge’s 80-year lifespan.

The stainless steel net, located about 20 feet below the bridge’s sidewalk, will span 1.7 miles of roadway on each side of the bridge and extend 20 feet out over the water.

It will be built over a period of four years, at a cost of just over $200 million drawn from a mix of federal, state and local sources.

  • The power to do nothing

    The power to do nothing

Throughout the course of the day, you most likely found yourself embroiled with some discussion about the events over the past 24 hours.. President Donald Trump, lampooned by the media since his inauguration, he suddenly been transformed into a war hero for launching 59 missiles at an Assad target in Syria. The event came after days of media attention to a purported chemical attack on a village in that nation. We were told by the collective media that Bashir Assad launched a sarin gas attack on his people. Russia said the opposite, that military flights bombed a munitions factory, allowing the escape of chemical weapons.

Regardless of cause, the rush into a strike back began. Bannon, out at the National Security Council, had no more say.. Jared Kushner behind the scenes, texting to Morning Joe while Ivanca did media tours, began to take charge.. Mad Dog’s plan of attack greenlighted.. Trump struck by surprise.. While the Chinese Prime Minister was tucked into his bed at Mar-a-Lago,  the United States military was ordered to launch the cruise missiles for an air base reportedly used by Bashir’s army to load chemical weapons onto planes.

We were told throughout the day that intelligence agencies–all of them–converged on the fact that Assad was the culprit. Despite the misgivings so many Democrats had about intelligence agencies in the 2000s proclaiming they knew were WMD in Iraq were, there was no time, this time, to debate. Trump acted ‘decisively’ the media says. Suddenly, MSNBC’s correspondents stopped calling him Mr. Trump and started saying ‘The President.”  He was the Commander in Chief, upset by seeing children die a horrid death on TV and given credit, finally, as being the leader of America.

    Positive coverage abounds..
A small chorus of just about none, along with Rand Paul, said that maybe Congress needs to be consulted. John McCain was cool with it. So was his friend Lindsay.
The media poo-poohs that nation. Flags waved today. Footage from the Pentagon of missiles  launching were all the rage.
    America is back.

    But the repercussions? So many.
For Trump, it was immediate! Many supporters online decided that this was not what they voted for, that his promises to NOT intervene in Syria were violated.. that he flipped on a major issue. Intervention!? That’s not what rural red states bought in to! They wanted less war! More jobs! The jobs numbers came out today. They were not stellar.

Russia is enraged, maybe. Some proclaim back room conspiracies.. dark smoke filled offices of ambassadors behind the scenes playing the chess game out.. But others, including the media, seem celebratory that Trump–the Russian agent days ago–is rejecting any friendship with Pootie Poot.

China.. They like Syria.. Chinese power players are meeting with Trump as he launches missiles.. A power play taking place.

North Korea.. News tonight that they may be on the target list next for the newfound Commander in Chief. NBC NEWS is reporting tonight that the  National Security Council has presented President Trump with options to respond to North Korea’s nuclear program — including putting American nukes in South Korea or killing dictator Kim Jong-un, multiple top-ranking intelligence and military officials told NBC News…

    And on the world.

I have written too many times to count on my hands about how I loathe war.. loathe the awful things humans can do to each other.. despise violence and hatred, and ponder how in the 21st century we still so often act as unchained animals in the wild. We ruin safe spaces. We harm innocent lives. We kill the living. And we destroy beautiful places, all to gain territory and solidify power.

We are powerless to that. We are not able to stop the freight train of history .. even if we tried.

So often I think about the one lone protester in Tiannamen Square in China last century. He stood against oppressive evil.  And he lost.

Because these big battles, the ones involving large scale country-chess games, just happen. Power brokers behind closed doors set the agenda.. the mission. In the chess games, the pawns so often don’t know what the back row is doing.

In life, we just exist. For the most part, we try living our lives.. we try protecting our children.. we attempt to have normal relationships .. and we close one eye while watching the news.

I will close two every now and then.

I wrote about Mr. Leeds before. If you have the time, please go and read those articles. While they are showing their age due to the dates they were written, the words ring true now.. Like this:

Despite it being one of the lowest rated movies of M. Night Shyamalan’s career, I loved LADY IN THE WATER. There is one character in particular who reminds me of so many people in our current time.. His name was “Mr. Leeds” played by actor Bill Irwin.  He is one of the tenants in the apartment building where a magical fairy tale will soon ensue.. but until it does, he is busy daily watching his television set of the latest scenes of chaos, strife, warfare and murder across the planet. Shyamalan presents him as a stoic man, someone who seemingly watches in a silent agony as the chilling news broadcasts play out 24/7 in his living room. And really, isn’t that all of us? The silent majority, not condemning the atrocities across the earth but instead attempting to live our lives as though they aren’t happening? Traveling to work in heavy traffic, consumed by radio interfering with our souls, standing around a water cooler with mindless dribble spewing? That is us.. We are good at heart.. But scared of the consequences of speaking out

Russian ambassador shot in Turkey at art gallery

This information coming from the Reuters news service..

ANKARA (Reuters) – The gunman who shot the Russian ambassador to Turkey in an attack at an art gallery on Monday was an off-duty police officer who worked in the Turkish capital, two security sources told Reuters.

Russia’s foreign ministry earlier confirmed that the ambassador, Andrey Karlov, had died in the attack. Turkish state media earlier reported that the gunman had been “neutralised” following the attack.

…..these little events…and big ramifications. It’s the kind of stuff world wars are made of..

Reality headline of the day: “Preventing World War III”

Turkey shot down a Russian jet this week .. and with it, shattered the safety and security of the world.

While the planet may always seem to be a hair trigger away from total chaos and anarchy, this event seemed likely to push us further to the brink of war.. or something.
Thanksgiving in America, people rushing home to be with friends and foes alike. Meanwhile the rest of the planet isn’t taking that break, instead they are rushing to battle.. arming their weapons.. finding their stations. Launching their tactics.. and positioning themselves in the game of either chess or checkers depending on your point of view of modern headlines.

This is the planet at large. One filled with doom and gloom..
    Terror and tales of fear.
The horror isn’t just on movie screens or televisions.. it’s real. It’s now beginning to be palpable.

The REUTERS news service issued an opinion dispatch that may dampen the turkey gravy your dinner table.

    The headline is blunt:

Preventing World War Three in Syria between Turkey and Russia

Is ‘wow’ the correct way to describe a reaction to such a piece?

Joshua Walker writes this in the report,

Despite hopes of a “grand coalition” forming in the wake of the Ankara, Sinai, and Paris bombings claimed by the so-called Islamic State, now there is an urgent need for de-escalation to salvage what little is left of peace and stability in the Middle East.

Moscow’s immediate accusations of Ankara’s “back-stabbing” and support for Islamic State followed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warnings of “serious consequences,” highlight just how high the stakes in Syria are for all parties involved. Hopes that the spillover effects from Syria could be contained are now dashed.

Turkey’s support of their ethnic brethren, the Turkmen of the northern Syrian region where the Russian pilots likely ejected, will only further complicate the situation on the ground. Given the fissures among the Kurds, Islamists, and rebel groups fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian supported forces, there is no hope of victory on the ground. To avoid further confrontation in the air and to prevent Russia from any retaliatory action, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization must re-affirm its support of Turkey and call for an immediate no-fly moratorium over Syria.

Yes indeed, these are serious times. Serious consequences also can result from actions or inactions.. Mistakes or mishaps.
And yes… TURKEY is a member of NATO. And NATO may be requested to…say…defend appropriately.. and Russia may … say.. respond to Turkey.. and China may…say… take a stand. And Kim Jong UN will ask for attention with a nuclear test.

And you can see how this ends.

We are thrust into chaos continuously. Cooler heads can prevail. One of these days they won’t.

The choice is in the hands of leaders who can push buttons and launch missiles.. Leaders who are fallible. Leaders with mental illness..

And leaders who we elect or are stuck with.

Yes, indeed. Preventing “world war 3” is a mighty task. Especially with the escalation of tension of tactics…

    The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports,

The 18-year-old college student singled out by the shooter as the “lucky one” to survive and deliver a package to law enforcement has told his story for the first time about the massacre in Roseburg, Ore.

In a written statement that was the most detailed account thus far of the Oct. 1 shooting, Mathew Downing said Friday that when Christopher Harper-Mercer entered the Umpqua Community College classroom, Downing’s ears were ringing from shots already fired, and he thought what was happening “couldn’t be real.”

    MORE//

He said the first thing the shooter did was put his backpack on the front desk and pull out an envelope, saying: “There is a flash drive in this and whoever survives this should give it to the police.”

Downing’s account of what came next coincides with relatives of survivors who previously reported that Harper-Mercer looked at Downing and said, “Hey, kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one. I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops.”

Downing said he stood up then, and the shooter pointed a gun at him. “This is the moment I thought I was going to die,” Downing said.

Instead, the shooter paused for a moment, Downing said, and handed him the envelope. Next, the shooter told Downing to sit in the very back seat and face him.

Downing did so and said at that point Harper-Mercer fired into the center of the room and began asking students one by one if they were religious. The shooter fired at one student who said he was Christian and another who said she was Catholic.

    The report goes on,

The shooter reloaded two handguns with ammunition from his backpack during the killings, Downing said. Harper-Mercer was “firing on people who were just lying there,” Downing said.

Downing also said the shooter seemed to lose interest when a woman told him she couldn’t move her legs to stand up because of the pain.

He turned to another woman, telling her to stand, and she picked up a desk to defend herself, Downing said. Harper-Mercer fired at her anyway, hitting her in the leg.

When the shooter noticed police, he leaned out a window and fired at them. Downing also wrote that after Harper-Mercer was hit by police gunfire, he lay down on the floor and shot himself in the head.

  • THEY ALL FLOAT

    THEY ALL FLOAT

    And Donald Trump’s polls rise.

    No matter what.

The media declared him dead. Republicans hoped his candidacy was. Megyn Kelly figured she stuck the dagger through the political heart of his campaign for president.

    And then ..

NBC news released a scientific poll showing that he is well in the lead AFTER the debates..

    From NBC news:

The overnight poll was conducted for 24 hours from Friday evening into Saturday. During that period, Donald Trump stayed in the headlines due to his negative comments about Kelly and was dis-invited from a major conservative gathering in Atlanta.
None of that stopped Trump from coming in at the top of the poll with 23 percent. Sen. Ted Cruz was next on the list with 13 percent.

    They indeed all float.
