Box office working blue: Avatar not as strong as expected while the WHALE fails..

This news developing tonight.. “Avatar 2” has come up short. Disney was hoping for a blow out with upwards of $175 million this weekend. The total is more like $130 million, which is certainly a big number but not the one to crow about.

It is starting to look like a Blue Christmas for a movie that everyone waited for for 13 years and cost at least $300 million and maybe as much as a billion with a B..

And consider it: With previews you will be at a theater for 4 hours or so. Is that worth it for a movie on the weekend before Christmas while Shopping and Dropping still has to take place?

Meanwhile Roger Freidman holds nothing back in his description of the WHALE’s failure:

Why am I not surprised by the negative reaction to “The Whale”? When I saw the film at the Hamptons Film Festival, I thought it was emotionally manipulative and over hyped. Since then, a lot of audiences didn’t like its take on the morbidly obese.

This second weekend of release saw a roughly 50% drop from the debut week. This weighty movie is not going to get off the ground. Brendan Fraser is fine, but his 600 pound fat suit is turning people off. The incredible nostalgia for Fraser, who was never a great actor, is not going to carry this thing over any threshold. Fraser is lucky: this is a light year for Best Actor nominees. He will get the semi-final nod because of it, but he won’t win.

Fraser’s 90s nostalgia seems similar, by the way, to the sentimental clamor for Ke Huy Quan in “Everything Everywhere.” It’s nice to see the “Indiana Jones” kid back, but this is a martial arts sci fi movie that becomes repetitive very quickly. Again, a nom for Best Supporting Actor, but Judd Hirsch and Brendan Gleeson are the real candidates for the top honor.

Meanwhile back to AVATAR… they have a long way to go to a billion.

    Visually stunning, they call it..
    ..unwatchable say others..
Just not enough time say the rest!

A worthwhile trip back into time.. remember in 2010 when we had to deal with the AVATAR depression? Maybe we will again?

  • Musk Tweet Mayhem: Will he step down!!?

Musk Tweet Mayhem: Will he step down!!?

He may be a controversial billionaire.. but no one could call Elon Musk boring.

Just when the weekend before Christmas seemed short of big news, Elon Musk typed something and launched a poll: Should he step down!?

He is asking users on Twitter to vote. And he said he will abide by the results!

He went on to subsequently post a few more interesting tidbits and hints..

But he also said be careful what you wish for.. you may get it!

    But get what?

    Intrigue abounds..

The poll comes after he was spotted meeting with Jared Kushner at the World Cup Final in Qatar.

But.. another Tweet response has Musk saying there is no successor chosen ..

“Twitter CEO Elon Musk and former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner were spotted enjoying the 2022 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday at Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar,” reported The Hill. “…Kushner was seen standing next to Musk at the game.”

“The former White House adviser, who is married to former President Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump, was seen at other World Cup matches as well, including the United States’ World Cup match against England with the Trump family.”

All of this after a day of live Tweeting videos of the World Cup as Argentina took the championship–and sustaining controversy after a new policy was announced that you cannot promote your other social media accounts on Twitter..

  • Do you remember this Sears ad ? It lived rent free for years

Do you remember this Sears ad ? It lived rent free for years

    We do!

As a matter of fact once we heard the opening line we recalled the advertisement and the entire series of lines!

What seems evident is that the marriage or relationship of the main characters in the ad was falling apart.

The heat was a metaphor for their connection. The implication was that Sears was so powerful it would be able to provide the materials to save their relationship.

And all these years later I can still recite the dialogue like I just heard it. But yet all these years I didn’t even remember I remembered it.

    Weird how that happens.

  • People are reporting lots of UFOs to a new agency–but there is still ‘nothing to see here’

People are reporting lots of UFOs to a new agency–but there is still ‘nothing to see here’

A new Pentagon office set up to track reports of unidentified flying objects has received “several hundreds” of new reports, but no evidence so far of alien life, the agency’s leadership told reporters Friday.

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was set up in July and is responsible for not only tracking unidentified objects in the sky, but also underwater or in space — or potentially an object that has the ability to move from one domain to the next.

So far, “we have not seen anything, and we’re still very early on, that would lead us to believe that any of the objects that we have seen are of alien origin,” said Ronald Moultrie, under secretary of defense for intelligence and security. “Any unauthorized system in our airspace we deem as a threat to safety.”

Sure, because we would be the first to know. 😉

  • Avatar’s long hours: Who is going to see it?

Avatar’s long hours: Who is going to see it?

The box office media will be quick to judge that 20th Century Studio/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water is coming in under its projections, with an opening day of $53M, and 3-day of $130M-$150M.

Projections were between $150M-$175M. That’s far off from the opening day of last December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is the second- highest grossing opening day ever at $121.9M, as well as that pic’s opening weekend at $260.1M, which is also the second-highest ever.

    image

Avatar: The Way of Water easily gets an “A” CinemaScore, the same grade as its first film 13 years ago. PostTrak is still 5 stars, 91% with men at 58%, women at 42%. Men over 25 are the biggest quad at 36% (89% grade), followed by women over 25 at 24% (93% grade), men under 25 at 21% (89% grade), and women under 25 at 19% (94% grade) — arguably a great hearty turnout for each demo. Diversity demo update on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak audience exits are 33% Caucasian, 27% Hispanic, 17% Black, 15% Asian and 8% Other.\

The movie is relying on a ‘Christmas feeling,’ hopeful that people will bring families and friends.. But it’s long as well. It’s a whole day out..

    With previews: 4 hours strong.

$150 mil.. just a few hundred more to make up the Billion it cost to make.

  • North Korea has popped off again

North Korea has popped off again

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles towards the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast on Sunday, South Korea’s military said.

Japan’s Vice Defence Minister Toshiro Ino said the North Korean-fired ballistic missiles seemed to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The missiles flew to an altitude of 550 kilometers (342 miles) and covered a range of 250 kilometers (53 miles), according to the Japanese Defence Ministry.

Ino said there had been no report of damage from the missiles so far.
