    Art Bell benched

Almost a year since the famed radio talk show host died of a drug overdose on Friday the 13th, a bench –a bench– will soon be dedicated in his honor in Pahrump Nevada.. But thanks to events on social media online, it’s not without controversy…

‘On The Fringe Friends of Heather Wade FaceBook Group’, which is now known as Paranormal Pandemonium received approval from Nye County to have a bench erected in Calvada Eye Park.

The bench would have a bronze plaque attached to it, with a picture of Art Bell, and his popular catch phrase, “Wanna Take A Ride?”

What is the controversy over an obscure park bench, you ponder?

Bell fans on both sides reacting, was at the bottom of the plaque where it referenced the Facebook group’s name, which included Bell’s successor, Heather Wade’s name.

This from SPACED OUT RADIO reporting,

As plans for Bell’s memorial bench circulated within the late-night, UFO, and paranormal community, other Art Bell fans, who have not been pleased with, nor supportive of the manner in which his Midnight In The Desert Radio Show was handled after he died, felt the names on the plaque would dishonor Bell’s memory, and most of all, upset his widow and their children.
Contacts were made to the Nye County Licensing Department, acknowledging procedures which had been followed by the FaceBook group, and subsequent approval of their request to have the bench erected. When asked if approval for erecting Mr Bell’s memorial bench had been rescinded in any way, the response was negative. A person from Nye County who could speak on this subject stated to the SOR News Wire, ”Approval has not been rescinded; however, I have contacted a close family friend, and the family themselves, in an effort to make sure their wishes are respected. The County will not place a memorial with any one group named as a contributor (aside from itself).”
Nye County is hoping to have the bench erected with an approved plaque by the first anniversary of Art Bell’s death. But it appears the Heather Wade FaceBook group’s name will not be placed on the plaque as a contributor. The county believes the bench will be a fitting memorial for their world wide celebrity who impacted late night radio into millions of fans and listeners.

As for Heather Wade? She has been silent since just before the new year began 2019.. Speculation has been rampant on her final Facebook past December 28 2018, including fans telling he they miss her and even some speculating that she passed away!

And now almost a year since Bell passed away, his protege has vanished as well…

Art Bell calmly prided himself as a voice within the darkness of the night to be mysterious and reassuring.. Nothing since his untimely passing has been anything but…

Wade took over for Art Bell when he abruptly left his program in 2015. Throughout ’16 she worked to keep an audience and build a new one..

Art Bell went on Facebook hours ago to congratulate Wade, commenting this,

A really big congrats to Heather Wade who just made the big list! If you have not heard her program in a long time you will be shocked at how good she has become!

  • Coast to Coast AM gets press in NEW YORK TIMES

Coast to Coast AM gets press in NEW YORK TIMES

Jonah Engel Bromwich and Bonnie Wertheim profiled Coast to Coast AM with George Noory on Monday – and the article seemingly talked more about Art Bell than the newer host!

The TIMES’ tone seemed positive.. but also nostalgic for the predecessor.. From the text:

Given the size of its audience, the show might be expected to cover topics squarely in the mainstream. But Mr. Noory’s listeners, whom he refers to as “the night people,” tend to focus more on fringier fare, whether it’s U.F.O. sightings near Area 51 or the myriad conspiracy theories that Mr. Noory’s predecessor, Art Bell, established as signatures of the program.

    ……

“Coast to Coast” began in 1984 as a talk radio program broadcasting from the Las Vegas station KDWN. Mr. Bell, its founder and first host, had originally been a D.J. He switched his focus to talk radio at a time when music listeners began to favor higher-fidelity FM stations, forcing many AM channels to switch formats. When “Coast to Coast” went national, in 1992, he started to receive calls from listeners about their paranormal experiences. Those calls soon became the show’s trademark.

When Mr. Bell left the show, he advised Mr. Noory not to imitate his hosting style, which gave listeners the (accurate) sense that he was broadcasting from a compound in the desert. He was isolated from his audience and occasionally confrontational with callers.

On one call from a man claiming to have worked for Area 51, Mr. Bell made his suspicion known right away: “Well, look, let’s begin by finding out whether you’re using this line properly or not.” And on Oct. 13, 1998, Mr. Bell signed off by saying: “This is it, folks. I’m going off the air and will not return.” When Mr. Noory took over, after his forerunner returned and vanished from the show a few more times, listeners noticed a shift in tone, from skeptical and sometimes critical to open-minded and kind.

“Art was a little more, if he thought you were loo-la, he would tell you,” said Veronica Costin, who started tuning in during the 1990s. It became a ritual for her: drifting off in her San Antonio bedroom to the sounds of faraway voices.

….I think it sounds like Bell had a fandom in the TIMES’ press room.. perhaps those late nights burning the fish wrapper oil with Bell in the background yelling at callers with insanity.. ?

Back to the present time: Noory is given some kind words as well from the TIMES article.. But one section pointed out just how different Bell and Noory actually are.. even reminding readers that Noory appears on Alex Jones’ radio show.. And a little product placement as well:

Each episode of “Coast to Coast” begins with a news segment, but when asked if he saw himself as a journalist, Mr. Noory responded that he was “a facilitator of the truth, wherever that takes us.”

His audience seems to see him as an authoritative, unifying force at a time when the country appears more fragmented than ever. Through his radio show, live events and two dating sites — Paranormal Date and Conspiracy Date — he acts as a connector and a surrogate for his listeners, whom he considers extended family. (Mr. Noory has three children and six grandchildren. He is private about his relationship status.)

I went back in the archives of the NEW YORK TIMES and read a May 1998 profile of Coast–then hosted by Art Bell.  reported in 1998:

Nearly 200 stations have added “Coast to Coast” in the last 18 months. One is WABC. The station’s late-night ratings have increased 30 percent, to 8.9 percent of the audience, since November. “I saw the numbers from across the country,” said Phil Boyce, WABC’s program director. “I wanted to get on that freight train.”

    How far things have come.

ART BELL REVOLUTION: TALK SHOW LEGEND PICKING UP STATIONS

A few days ago, Art Bell announced the he was joining with Nexus to provide up to 4,000 stations the ability to ‘flip the switch’ and broadcast MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT to whatever program directors decide to pick up the show..

It looks like the nighttime revolution is beginning to pick up steam..

Bell last night wrote on Facebook,

New Stations for MITD: First come first served:
    Starting in Dec KFMB SanDiego/La
    Starting early October:
KFRH Fm 100KW Las Vegas 104.3
    KBET 790 AM Las Vegas
    KTKN 930AM Ketchikan, AK
KLZ 560 AM Denver, CO 5KW
    WDCD 1540 Albany, NY 50KW
And so it begins, this is how we take
back the night. Please call your local station and request MITD but make sure it is not the station that carries that other show but instead the competition.

And this tonight came from Bell on the same forum:

The Stations are coming fast now but I will not post them till we have signed agreements. It is because of what you all are doing in calling and asking them to pick up the show, please continue, IT WORKS. Available on XDS on Oct 1st.
    Art

The fan base has responded to his request for stations to pick up the program.
Though Bell began MIDNIGHT with the intention of an online only show, it is becoming increasingly likely that he is attempting to take back the night in a 20th century fashion–on radio — in stereo..
More stations surely will be announced as time goes..
Until then, it’s free to listen on ARTBELL.COM or TuneIN radio.. and the Dark Matter Radio Network. Time travelers, not locked in at $5, are paying $7 for post-show streaming..
No word from the Coast crowd by the Bellgabbers sure are gabbing.

DAWN IN THE DESERT: ART BELL’S UPDATE

For days, Art Bell has teased a major announcement for today.

That announcement hit–it also portends a major development in his program MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT and another enormous opportunity for him to change the night time air waves..

    From Bell:

ANNOUNCEMENT from ART BELL: It has been a great two Months start but now it’s time to get serious. Starting Oct 1st Midnight in the Desert will send an XDS feed by Satellite to almost 4000 Radio Stations in Stereo, which means all they have to do is flip a switch and we are on.Now that we are taking this step, we need your help. Please call your local station Manager or Program Director, tell them you would like Midnight In The Desert on their station and that we are now starting Oct 1st on XDS.Share this with everyone! It’s time to Take Back the Night.
    Art Bell

The talk show legend included this YOUTUBE video in his update:
    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDrdTwwZ1wc]
There is a certainty that more stations will pick up the program..
There is also no doubt that the producers at COAST TO COAST AM and George Noory are closely watching.. and seeing a MIDNIGHT rider nipping on their Premiere Heels..

    // MORE //

A press release tonight from NEXUS and MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT explains more details:

Nexus Broadcast will be delivering Art Bell to over 4,000 new affiliates via XDS Satellite feed in Stereo, starting October 1st.
As easy as a flip of a switch, Nexus and Midnight in the Desert are inviting AM and FM terrestrial stations to carry the full 3 hour format (2 hours and 58 minutes from the top).

    MORE

The company’s official page and press release is touting the benefits for local radio directors to consider Bell for the hours during darkness.

    COMPETITION:

George Noory and Red Eye Radio are the main stays overnight since Bell left. While Clyde Lewis maintains a market of Premiere, Coast to Coast AM is the main attraction and would potentially be the biggest loser in a successful MIDNIGHT showing..

There seems to be some sort of history being made–forgive me for ignorance, but I have ever heard of such an offer being made to 4,0000 potential customers on radio..

  • RADIO STEALS THE INTERNET STAR: THE GROWING ART BELL STATION LIST

RADIO STEALS THE INTERNET STAR: THE GROWING ART BELL STATION LIST

It will be Christmas in July for Art Bell fans when he begins his broadcast next month of MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT..

Last night, Art Bell already tested equipment and it was a ‘go.’
Keith Rowland told the HORROR REPORT that lines were lit up fast for the full duration of the Sunday night Skype and ‘Callart’ phone line test. Bell later went on to make his Facebook page more public, allowing users who aren’t one of his capped 5000 ‘friends’ to comment on his posts and links..

The ball is moving towards a July 20th game.
Along with it: Radio stations that are more traditional and terrestrial than the online plans.

And now ARTBELL.COM hosts a page that gives information on the full affiliates who are broadcasting MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT.

    The list promises to grow.
Despite Bell’s best intentions to be streaming only with the help of Apps, iPhones, Androids, and TuneIn, he’s going to be beamed the old fashioned way as well..

And even Art Bell himself seems to be a fan of the terrestrial way. Tonight on Facebook he wrote,

“If you have a local station you wish to carry it the best bet is to give the Manager or Program Director a call and ask..”

If you build it, they will come.
If you broadcast, they will carry..

Clyde Lewis broadcasting live last night from the McMinnville UFO festival shows off his paranormal cred..

There are some who love Lewis and others who don’t..

As for me, I maintain he is currently the best radio show host on today..

The close runner up is Dave Schrader on DARKNESS RADIO.. however when it comes to knowledge of paranormal and para political subjects, Lewis is spot on and always fun..

Those who dislike him still have to admit that he is one of the hardest working persons in broadcasting–even coming back with full force after heart attacks and cancer, and still being able to put on a good show..

He will have some competition when Art Bell resumes in July, of course..
As will the worst host on radio today: George Noory.

GET THE CCRANES READY: ARTBELL.COM RELEASES AN FAQ ON HOST’S RETURN

THE MODERN STUDIO. SIMPLE IS IN

An excited Art Bell posted a link on his Facebook page to ArtBell.com tonight. The site announces a set of FAQs in relation to the MIDNIGHT IN THE DESERT program set to appear this summer..

You can read the full text of what Keith Rowland posted here.

A couple of points worth repeating as well.. including this: Art Bell will most likely not be coming back in any form to terrestrial radio, according to the FAQ sheet. The program is made to work online–less commercials and more free flowing. Something that will not translate into the structured world of corporate stations..

According to Rowland, the basics to know:

The show is now called “Midnight in the Desert” and will broadcast LIVE from 9pm to Midnight Pacific, Midnight to 3am Eastern for FREE, Monday thru Friday.
You can listen via this website, or use an app on your smartphone or tablet. Currently you can listen via the TuneIn app. Install TuneIn from your App store and search for Dark Matter Radio and you’ll be listening to the current schedule of shows.
On-demand archives will be available under a subscription membership service, soon to be announced.

The site advertises both a CC-WIFI or CC-WIFI2 radio from C Crane as the best means of hearing Bell, besides of course streaming directly from ArtBell.com.
Also, Bell can boast that he is merging the 21st century with amazing days of old: He will also be broadcasting MIDNIGHT on SHORTWAVE radio station 5,085 khz.  Rowland writes,

We have made a deal with a shortwave station out of Tennessee, WTWW on 5,085 khz, a good frequency to be heard at that time of night. They will carry just the LIVE portion of the show.

    There will by SKYPE calls..
There will be a message board–two actually, one not moderated at all..
And there will be a message service to talk to Art during the show.

    The excitement is building..
This seems very different from the SIRIUS radio setup. This time, Art Bell seems to be doing it not to prove a point, not to recreate magic, but to create brand new magic and be himself.

Perhaps the best thing about SIRIUS was the mistake it all was.. the backroom deals between NOORY and Company.. the corporate ignorance of Bell’s simple requests.. And a two year respite non compete for Bell and Rowland to truly consider what approach they want.

    And fans love it.
C CRANE may have their busiest year in some time.
I for one will be making a call very soon..

    UPDATE: CLYDE LEWIS HEALTH SCARE

Last night, while Clyde Lewis hosted his popular Ground Zero radio show, he abruptly ended the program and was rushed to the hospital for what turned out to be chest pains.

Tonight, Lewis’ program is again repeating an earlier broadcast as the host is still in the hospital under observation–the latest in a series of health issues that have taken aim at the paranormal radio star.

Clyde Lewis wrote this tonight on his Facebook page:

    UPDATE:

Clyde is resting well at OHSU Medical Center under close short-term observation, His experienced chest pains last night while on the air, related somewhat to his embolisms but, it turned out, not dangerously so. More urgent conditions were ruled out by immediate medical response and testing.

We know that it is worrisome when a show must end abruptly. We wait until there was something substantial to report before we make announcements on this page. As always, THANK YOU for your continued encouragement and support!
