Can we please stop eating bats?

Clearly it isn’t working out for us anymore.

An unknown illness first discovered in three children who ate a bat has rapidly killed more than 50 people in northwestern Congo over the past five weeks, health experts say.

The interval between the onset of symptoms – which include fever, vomiting and internal bleeding – and death has been 48 hours in most cases and “that’s what’s really worrying,” said Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, a regional monitoring center.

These “hemorrhagic fever” symptoms are commonly linked to known deadly viruses, such as Ebola, dengue, Marburg and yellow fever, but researchers have ruled these out based on tests of more than a dozen samples collected so far.

  • China VirusES? Can we believe these social media reports? Before you panic let’s be sensible

China VirusES? Can we believe these social media reports? Before you panic let’s be sensible

PTSD hits the planet when news of China viruses breaking out occurs–especially when reports indicate high death rates, infections of younger people, and crematoriums being overwhelmed..

This is what is being reported now across social media: China is facing a surge in multiple viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums. Children’s hospitals are particularly strained by rising pneumonia and “white lung” cases.

This quote comes to us from sources quoting someone named Ms. Wang:

Ms. Wang, a funeral director in Zhejiang, described long cremation lines, with VIP furnaces in use, emitting heavy smoke. She likened the scene to a bustling New Year market. As a result, the government has declared a state of emergency in response to the escalating epidemic.

And a Youtube video from ‘Decoding China’ is another source..

BUT IS ANY OF THIS TRUE!?

Caution before believing headlines.. delve deep. There is no official mention of China declaring any emergencies.. additionally there is nothing from official health sources like the World Health Organization.

And while we are sure Ms. Wang exists.. who is she and where is she? Credible sources are necessary before we devolve into panic.

There were official reports in November of a surge of pneumonia in China along with other respiratory diseases. So it is very likely some hospitals are now being overwhelmed. Is it a COVID-like situation?

It should be noted that some sleuths have discovered some truths: That videos and clips being shown may be from years ago.

There are no statements or reliable reports to support these claims. A Community Note on X read: “There is no information to back up the claim that China has declared a state of emergency over epidemics overwhelming the hospitals and crematoriums in the country.”..

This is not to say we aren’t in store for wild pandemics in 2025–who knows. But right now, at this moment, despite rumors there appears to be no credible sources AT THIS TIME that any of these events in China are occurring. That could change quickly–the Communist government may be keeping a tighter lid on things. Perhaps these rumors will be true.. and maybe Ms. Wang is right. Until confirmation.. keep your head up high and that mask in the back pocket..

The WHO asks China about pneumonia case spike

This reporting from the Associated Press:

Chinese officials say they did not detect any “unusual or novel diseases” in the country, the World Health Organization said Thursday, following an official request by the U.N. health agency for information about a potentially worrying spike in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children.

WHO cited unspecified media reports and a global infectious disease monitoring service as reporting clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China and formally requested more details from China earlier this week.

Skeletons of 1918 flu victims reveal clues about who may have died

A new paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Using evidence from the skeletons of those who died in the 1918 outbreak, researchers reported that people with chronic diseases or malnutrition, regardless of their age, were twice as likely to die as those without such conditions.

The 1918 virus killed the young, but it was no exception to the observation that infectious diseases kill the weak and sick most easily.

Sharon DeVitte, an anthropologist at the University of Colorado, Boulder and author of the paper, said the finding had a clear message: “We should never expect any accidental cause of death to be blind.”

Analysis of the skeletons was conducted by University of Michigan flu epidemic historian J. Alex Navarro makes “a fascinating article and a very interesting approach to studying this issue.”

  • It’s not you, it’s me!

    It’s not you, it’s me!

So you think you are the same as you were a few years ago!? Think again!

New research published in PLOS One reported that American adults experienced changes in their personalities over the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes were small but equivalent to around a decade’s worth of personality changes in only two years.

Here are the details of just how abrupt of an about face most people had–did you too?

The researchers analyzed data from 7,109 adults, aged 18 to 109, enrolled in the Understanding America Study.

The participants took personality tests that assessed the traits in the widely-accepted five-factor model of personality—neuroticism (managing stress), extroversion (connecting with others), openness (creative thinking), agreeableness (trusting others), and conscientiousness (being disciplined and responsible).

The researchers examined test results from before the pandemic, early in the pandemic (March to December 2020, according to the researchers), and later in the pandemic (January 2021 to February 2022). In the latter part of the study, researchers reported declines in extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness in the subjects—personality traits that help people navigate social situations, trust others, and act responsibly.

Particularly susceptible to these changes were young adults, who also showed an increase in neuroticism later in the pandemic.

Even more.. younger people were affected differently..

“Younger adults became moodier and more prone to stress, less cooperative and trusting, and less restrained and responsible,” the authors of the study told The Guardian.

Whether it was the pandemic, or just something else that coincided with the global upheaval, something certainly did seem to change. Something seemed to alter.. what was normal has turned upside down. What was accepted has become widely denounced.. something, for sure, has changed..

Polio detected in NYC’s sewage, suggesting that the virus is circulating

The presence of the poliovirus in the city’s wastewater suggests likely local circulation of the virus, health authorities from the city, New York state and the federal government said.

The authorities urged parents to get their children vaccinated against the potentially deadly disease.

“The risk to New Yorkers is real but the defense is so simple — get vaccinated against polio,” New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said. “With polio circulating in our communities there is simply nothing more essential than vaccinating our children to protect them from this virus, and if you’re an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated adult, please choose now to get the vaccine. Polio is entirely preventable and its reappearance should be a call to action for all of us.”

  • Nothing says Halloween like a candy chute

Nothing says Halloween like a candy chute

The pandemic got you down? Cathy Bambenek’s candy chute may be just what you need in 2020?

    https://wfaa.com/embeds/video/287-f1139730-b08a-4ade-bf5c-bf9cb5360902/iframe

There are tips being provided by WFAA in Dallas on how to create your own socially distance candy chute

-Buy PVC pipe which you can find at any hardware store or use a shipping tube if you have one at the home. *make sure the openings are large enough for candy to pass through.

    – Cut the tube to the desired length *if trying to keep 6 feet social distance make sure the tube is longer than 6 feet

-Angle pipe or tube based on location and specifications of your home

-Make sure the contraption is safely set so you don’t put trick-or-treaters in harms way

-Make sure the person dispensing candy sanitizes hands or wear gloves

-Try to avoid trick-or-treaters from gathering in close proximity around the tube

THEY NEED TO STAND BACK FROM THE TUBE. AVOID THE TUBE.

    Stay distant from the tube.
